FEU sweeps 1st round

MANILA, Philippines (UPDATE) – The Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws completed a sweep of the first round rallying past the gritty University of Sto. Tomas (UST) Growling Tigers, 65-57, on Saturday in the UAAP Season 73 men’s basketball at The Arena.

RR Garcia presided over FEU’s closing run in the 4th period as the Tamaraws duplicated their first round sweep during their last title run in 2005.

Garcia exploded for 10 points in the payoff period, igniting a 10-0 run at the onset of the quarter to break away from a 45-all standoff.

Garcia also sealed the victory with a difficult drive in the last 46.7 seconds to push FEU’s lead to 63-54.

“Kampante ako kapag nasa loob si RR (Garcia). Para kasi para siyang coach sa loob ng court. Siya ang pinakamagaling na point guard sa collegiate ngayon,” said FEU coach Glen Capacio of his prized ward.

Garcia, who hails from Zamboanga, made a team-high 22 points and added 4 rebounds and 3 steals.

UST, which led by as much as 11, 25-14, early in the game, could not buy a basket until midway in the 4th period.

UST’s Clark Bautista fell silent while Jeric Teng and Jeric Fortuna could only score two points each during the height of FEU’s scorching run in the final quarter.

Chris Camus led UST with a huge double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds that went down the drain.

“Defense did it for us. Masaya ako na na-duplicate naming ‘yung first round sweep noong 2005. Pero ‘di pa tapos. Dodoblehin pa naming sa second round,” Capacio said.

The Tigers though still managed to sink 9 three-pointers, but the Tamaraws held them down to only two free throws and forced them to 17 turnovers that led to 18 turnover points.
