Japan def. arch rival China in straight sets

The 19th edition of the Asian Women’s Volleyball Championship which is currently being hosted in the country held one of its most awaited matches yesterday. A classic volleyball clash between two of the world’s most powerful volleyball national teams, China and Japan.

The Japanese were quick to make a statement building a comfortable lead over China which they maintained for most parts of the opening set. The Chinese also failed to bag the second set as the Japanese utilized their multiple attacking options along with their signature solid defense.

The Chinese offered a challenging 3rd set as they tried to resist a quick defeat from the Japanese. The girls in blue however managed to hang on to take the thrilling 3rd set as well as the match 25-14, 25-17, 26-24.

Japan’s young guns Sarina Koga, Rika Nomoto and 2012 Olympic bronze medalist Risa Shinnabe all contributed 13 points for their team. Japan also remain undefeated in the tourney winning their first two matches and has yet to drop a set so far.

De Guzman Went All Out, Led Team Rajah Over Team Lakan in Clash of Heroes

Johnvic de Guzman proved that he is worthy to be the captain of the national team as he led Blue Rajah to a thrilling five-set victory against Red Lakan in Monday night’s Clash of Heroes event at FilOil Flying V Centre in San Juan.

The national men’s volleyball pool members fought to a five-setter match that looked more like a do-or-die playoffs than an exhibition game. All the members went all out and bring their A-game to the event.
“I told my players to play their best, their places in the national team is at stake”  said Men’s national team coach Sammy Acaylar. “Sabi ko lang sa kanila, walang relax, walang bigayan. They have to give their best in this Clash of Heroes.”
NCAA MVP De Guzman, delivered 19 points to lift the Philippines-Blue to a 25-27, 25-23, 25-19, 18-25 and 15-9 triumph over the PH-Red led by Bryan Bagunas who showcase his skills with 24-point performance.
De Guzman teamed up with the veteran player Ran Ran Abdilla who produced 15 big points in the match. Also to add in the scoreboard was Dave Cabaron who chipped in 13 points, four of it came from service aces.
Coach Acaylar said that right now, he has 10 players running in his mind who will be included for the 18-man national team. The one player that surely has a spot in the line-up was De Guzman who was named captain in the national team.
When Coach Acaylar was asked about the player who never showed up, like the Bonjomar Castel, Peter Torres and Ateneo phenom Marck Espejo, he  said that they are no longer included in the pool.
“My patience for them ran out,” said Acaylar with frustration in his tone. “It’s obvious that they are not committed and can’t give time to the national team.”
From the 24 players that showed up on Clash of Heroes, 18 will be chosen to be part of the national team training pool. The final selection will be announced by next week, according to coach Acaylar.

UAAP: Computation on how La Salle’s Majoy Baron won the Women’s MVP Award

Many are shocked that Majoy Baron of La Salle won the MVP Award of UAAP Women’s Volleyball Tournament. They are expecting that It was a run away win already by Santiago of NU. But here us the breakdown of the MVP computation

Baron: 46 + 81 + 90 + 66 + 20 + 36 + 20 = 359 x 10 = 3,590
Morente: 60 + 90 + 40 + 73 + 44 + 20 + 51 = 378 x 10 = 3,780
Santiago: 100 + 100 + 100 + 51 + 21 + 21 + 20 = 413 x 10 = 4,130

Won games were also considered and the victories in the regular season were multiplied by 30, the result of which is added to the total that was earlier computed.

Here are the three’s points total from their respective teams’ victories:

Baron: 3,590 + (11 x 30) = 3,920
Morente: 3,780 + (12 x 30) = 4,140
Santiago: 4,130 + (7 x 30) = 4,340

Finally, the grand total is divided by the number of sets played to arrive at each player’s statistical points.

So here’s the final tally:

Baron: 3,920 ÷ 46 = 85.217
Morente: 4,140 ÷ 51 = 81.176
Santiago: 4,340 ÷ 55 = 78.909

It was clear that Morente and Santiago had the edge in statistics from offende and defense, but their chances to win the MVP award were dilluted when the number of sets played came into play.

Fuming Mad Fans on Baliton’s Slot in the National Team

University of the East (UE) lady warrior Roselle Baliton received tons of cruel and virulent messages after her college coach Francis Vicente announced that she made it to the pool in the national woman’s volleyball team for the upcoming 29th Southeast Asian Games in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia in August.
Volleyball fans were really furious about the inclusion of Baliton in the lineup. They knew that the 18 year old, third year player was a middle blocker before she became a setter. They believed that her skills as a playmaker were not enough for her to participate in the international matchup.Doubtful and disappointed messages flooded her social media account. And it added more serious wrath to her bashers when the UAAP stars like the former MVP Ara Galang from De Lasalle, and former Best Setter Jia Morado from Ateneo University both didn’t make it on the pool.
But Baliton just shrugged off the harsh and negative comments she had been receiving. She just kind of expected it to happen. Nevertheless, bashers and so called critics can only give her hostile reaction but she will remain as part of the national team.
