FC Meralco Manila: Eliminated In The PFL Finals Series

The Sparks Lost To The Sugbu Warriors

Rizal Memorial Stadium, Manila – The top seed, FC Meralco Manila, lost to the Global Cebu F.C. (fourth seed) with an aggregate score of 3-2. A heartbreak loss for the Sparks as they fall short from the Sugbu Warriors in the semi-finals of the inaugural season of the Philippines Football League.
During the first leg of the semi-finals last December 2, 2017, Global Cebu F.C. won the game with a 2-1 lead. On the second leg (December 9, 2017), the Sparks led 1-0 during the halftime with an excellent goal from Curt Dizon in the 2nd minute of the game.
Global fought back hard in the second half and Rufino Sanchez scores a stunning goal in the 85th minute. The game ended 1-1 but with an aggregate score of 3-2. The Sugbu Warriors booked the first ticket to the PFL Championship.
In the other match of the PFL semi-finals which also happened last December 9, 2017, the Ceres-Negros F.C. defeated the Kaya F.C. Makati at the home court of the Ceres at Panaad Stadium in Bacolod City. The Busmen book the second ticket to the PFL Championship shortly after denying the The Mighty Kaya to their appearance in the first PFL Championship. The roaring fans of the Busmen helped their team in performing better against their opponents.
The Global Cebu F.C. advances to the first-ever Philippines Football League Championship and will face the Ceres-Negros F.C. These two giant teams of Philippine football will clash on December 16, 2017 at Panaad Stadium. The Visayan Clasico is the most awaited game in the PFL by the football fans in the Philippines. Also, the battle for third place between F.C. Meralco Manila and Kaya F.C. Makati will also be held on December 16, 2017, but at the Rizal Memorial Stadium.

Azkals Share Points with Yemen, Remains on Top of Group F

The Philippine Azkals are among the national teams in action this international break as they continue their campaign to make it to the 2019 AFC Asia Cup.
The Azkals faced a very familiar foe in Yemen. A team they have been grouped with during the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers.
This time, both teams slug it out for Group F’s top spot. A position which is very important to be in, since only the top 2 teams of each group will qualify for Asia’s premier football competition 2 years from now.
The match against Yemen was held in Qatar where a good number of Filipinos were in attendance to support the Azkals. Both teams had great share of possession. Etheridge though, seemed to be the busier keeper as the Yemenis had great chances throughout the game.
In the 63rd minute, Yemen scored the game’s opening goal after a scramble right in front of the Azkals goal. From thereon, the Azkals created better chances. The Filipinos were keen to equalize and share the points with Yemen. Time wasn’t on their side but they kept pushing, until Paul Mulders found Mike Ott who easily found the back of the net in the 89th minute of the match.
It was a huge relief for the Azkals since they knew that if they gave the win away, Yemen would take the group’s top spot.
The Azkals will face Nepal next. The game is scheduled to take place on November 14 and will be an away match for our national team.

match against Ilocos United FC.

FC Meralco Manila, the football  team representing the Philippines’ capital faced Ilocos United FC at the Rizal Memorial Stadium for their second match in the PFL. This is the first time Meralco played in front of their home crowd and they did not disappoint as the men in orange took a narrow 2-1 victory  over the visitors.

Ilocos United FC who came off a 1-1 draw against Davao Agilas in their first PFL match took the lead early on in the game after Graham Caygill found the back of the net on the 13th minute. The home squad however were quick to take it back as Tyler Matas banked the equalizer on the 18th minute.

The visitors, despite being a new team, looked very impressive as they showed no signs of intimidation against Meralco Manila. The Sparks on the other end showed composure and patience, their passing were very fun to watch as it was very organized and well designed to break the opponent’s defense.

Both teams exchanged chances until Jake Morallo broke the deadlock in the second half to give the Sparks the lead. In the final minutes of the match, Ilocos threatened a lot taking every bit of chance to equalize and share the points with Manila. The visitors dominated the possession as they looked determined not to give up scaring everyone with every shot they took. The fans rejoiced as the final whistle blew. FC Meralco Manila now has 6 points putting them up top the table of the league.
