Exclusive Interview |Troy Rosario on fellow Bulldog, Dennice Villamor
NU bulldogs sent the most numbers of Draftees in the upcoming 2015 PBA Rookie Draft and two of them are Troy Rosario and Dennice Villamor.
Troy Rosario is now one of the top prospects in the big man position in the upcoming draft while Dennice Villamor is also one of the best available shooter and defender on the Forward position.
We asked troy some questions about his fellow bulldog Dennice Villamor.
“Hardworking” , is Troy’s answer when we asked him about Villamor’s work ethics when he was still in the NU Bulldogs.
We also asked how can he describe Villamor’s performance when they are still playing in the UAAP and he said , “Magaling si Dennice , lalo na sa outside shots, madepensa din.” Which was evident during Villamor’s stint in the UAAP and the PBA Developmental league. Since the draft day is just around the corner we asked for his message to Dennice and the other Bulldogs who will be facing a nerve wrecking event in their lives and will also experience the turning point of their career in basketball and he said , “Goodluck satin bro sa draft, magbubunga din paghihirap natin.”
Dennice Villamor is one of the promising draftees in this year’s rookie draft, a player with the right attitude and great skillset and a very down to earth personality is definitely a perfect fit in to the Professional League. A forward that has good touches on the perimeter, can defend and collect boards, any team will be lucky to have him in their roster.
NU Bulldogs’ Dennice Villamor Enters the 2015 PBA Rookie Draft
Dennice Villamor who played along side with Troy Rosario and Bobby “Ray” Parks jr during their stint in the UAAP for the NU Bulldogs is now ready to take the challenge and will be trying to step into another stair of his Basketball career as he officially qualify to the 2015 PBA Rookie Draft that will be held on August 23, 2015 at Robinson’s Manila.
Villamor also played in the Aspirants Cup in the PBA D-league bannering the NU-BDO ballclub and his latest stint was with the Jumbo Plastic Linoleum Giants. His team role of being a shooter from his previous collegiate team has been evident in most of his games in the UAAP and has made himself flexible and improved his defensive capability as a role player in the PBA developmental league. A hard working forward who has good ball handling skills, can shoot and defend are the key things that PBA Teams are looking for and also made him ready to face a new challenge by stepping into the country’s professional basketball league. The Laguna native who started playing when he was in elementary to secondary level with Liceo de San Pablo, was able to develop and improve his skills and took his chances in the collegiate ball bearing with him his humble beginnings. Dennice Villamor who has been a key player of every team he played for will now try to reach for his dream of playing in the Professional League’s Hardcourt.
Texters repulse Ginebra Kings’ rally, clinch No.1 seed in PBA semifinals
Talk `N Text survived a fiery Barangay Ginebra comeback from 20 points down before prevailing, 102-99, and clinched the no. 1 seed in the semifinals of the PBA Commissioner’s Cup before a big Sunday crowd at the Araneta Coliseum.
The Tropang Texters withstood the Kings’ fierce rally in the endgame, including a possible game-tying three-pointer by Mark Caguioa, which missed its mark just before the final buzzer, that handed the telecommunication franchise its eight straight win in the tournament.
With an 8-1 card, and coupled by Smart-Gilas’ 87-91 overtime loss to Meralco Saturday night in Tacloban City, Talk `N Text formally goes into the best-of-five Final Four as the top-seeded team.
At 7-2, the Nationals get the no. 2 seeding in the semis.
Ginebra lost for the second game in a row for a 5-4 record, ending its elimination round campaign. It now awaits the outcome of Alaska (5-3) and Rain or Shine’s (4-4) final assignments to determine its placing in the best-of-three quartefinals.
Paul Harris led the Tropang Texters, whose lone loss came at the expense of Smart Gilas, with 23 points, while Ryan Reyes added 15, all of them from three-point range.
Talk `N Text led by as many as 59-39 on a Harris basket with 39.3 seconds left before the break.
But just like in the past, no lead is safe. Not against Barangay Ginebra.
Finding their second wind, the Kings fought back in the second half behind Caguioa, import Nate Brumfield and Willie Miller. An emphatic dunk by Brumfield, capped by a steal, finally tied the game at 91-all with 6:31 to go in the match.
The Tropang Texters however, answered back behind a five-point cluster, capped by a long Jimmy Alapag trey, to make it a 100-95 game.
After a split from the foul line by Harris, 101-99, the Kings had the chance to tie the game, but Brumfield failed to convert inside.
Forced to foul, the Kings sent Jason Castro to the free throw line and the Talk `N Text guard settled for a split to make it a three-point Tropang Texters lead in the final 7.3 seconds.
Brumfield showed the way for the Kings with 26 points, while Caguioa had 25. – RCJ, GMA News

Tenorio, Devance heroics help Alaska to overtime thriller win over Meralco
source: www.PBA.ph
Then the unexpected happened.
Then Joe Devance, who wasn’t supposed to play with a second-degree sprained right ankle, took over, knocking six points in overtime as Alaska outscored Meralco, 10-7 in extra session. Devance finished with 19 points that went with his eight rebounds, eight assists and three blocks.
“To be honest nag-cross sa mind ko na we can’t win without LD minus his rebounding and intensity. But during the break napag-usapan namin na magandang challenge into. And we did it,” related Tenorio, who exploded with all his points in the second half after going scoreless in the first.
“LA did everything to bring us back. It’s incredible to watch LA do that kind of stuff,” said Alaska coach Tim Cone, who also heaped praises for Devance.
“Joe wasn‘t supposed to play. His ankle was still swollen like a tennis ball. I guess he got inspired by Kobe Bryant. He said he got some pain but can go through it and was ready to play. But in my mind I wasn’t playing him,” Cone said.
Alaska improved to 5-2 (win-loss) record with their first win in three overtime games this conference – all against Manny Pangilinan teams — and kept the Aces in the hunt for an outright semifinal berth.
It was a frustrating loss for the Bolts, who controlled the game for most parts and appeared to have sealed the win when Champ Oguchi hit a 3-point shot that gave them a 94-83 advantage with 3:08 remaining.
As a result, they had their two-game streak snapped and, worse, their fifth defeat in seven games pushed them on the brink of elimination.
Oguchi scored 30 points, Sol Mercado had 24 and Mark Cardona added 23 for the Bolts, who went scoreless in the last three minutes of regulation.
Tenorio’s successive 3-pointers capped a sensational performance by the smart Alaska guard and an 11-point cluster by the Aces in the fourth.
Alaska could have won it in regulation but Cyrus Baguio (17 points, 12 rebounds, 4 assists) missed his second free throw with 0.3 of a second remaining that sent the game into overtime.
Williams, who averaged 24.7 poind 10.3 rebounds in his first six games, was ejected with 7:52 to play in the fourth after being whistled with a flagrant foul penalty two after landing an elbow on Cardona’s head while trying to protect the basketball with his eyes shut. (DBC)
The scores:
Alaska 104 – Tenorio 33, De Vance 19, Baguio 17, Thoss 9, Borboran 5, Eman 5, Williams 4, Dela Cruz 4, Custodio 4, Cablay 4, Thiele 0.

Must-win for Beermen, try to revive fading hopes
San Miguel tries to inject life to its sagging bid in the PBA Commissioner’s Cup, facing sister-team Barangay Ginebra in a must-win situation Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.
Although their current 1-4 record is not the worst start for the proud franchise, the Beermen badly need a win going into their 6:30 p.m. encounter with the Kings to stay in the hunt for a playoffs berth in the import-flavored tournament.
The Beermen had lost three in a row for and are mired in the bottom of the standings, together with Air21 and Meralco.
They are coming off a 91-99 defeat to the Powerade Tigers after losing grip of a 14-point third-quarter lead.
Despite his team’s dilemma, coach Ato Agustin is still optimistic that eventually his players can turn around their campaign, after shaking up their lineup with that blockbuster trade consummated with the Air21.
“May chance pa naman (to make the playoffs), kaya lang mahirap. We have to win all of our remaining games to have a shot,” said Agustin.
The worst start the Beermen had in recent years was at 0-6 in the 2007 Fiesta Conference, although the last time the team failed to make it past the playoffs came in the 2005 Fiesta Conference.
The Beermen are still confident of their chances, but they will be up against a surging Ginebra side which won its last two matches, including a 99-86 rout of Air21 only last Wednesday.
The Kings occupy the middle of the standings with a 3-2 card along with Rain or Shine.
“This is a big game for both teams,” said Ginebra coach Jong Uichico. “We are now in the crucial stretch and every game will count big time.”
Rain or Shine meanwhile, sees action for the third time in a week, hoping to break a two-game slide when it goes up against Air21.
The Elasto Painters lost to Talk ‘N Text, 78-99, and Smart-Gilas, 94-99, after racing to a 3-0 record for their best start in franchise history.
“Mataas naman ang morale ng team,” said Elasto Painters’ coach Yeng Guiao, unmindful of his team’s losing streak. “Hindi kami affected by the two losses. We’re disappointed but we’re doing well. We still have a good chance of making the top six, that’s the objective.”
The 4 p.m. match marks the first time Guiao will be facing the last team he coached before moving to the Rain or Shine bench.
“It’s all forgotten what happened in the off-season,” Guiao said. “It’s not a factor anymore. It doesn’t give me any additional motivation. It’s the natural desire to win the game that matters.”
The Express have lost four straight after opening the tournament with a 92-87 win over the Beermen. – JVP, GMA News

PBA D-League set for take-off
source: Joaquin Henson | philstar.com
The PBA Developmental League, or D-League, is slated to reel off at the Arena in San Juan on March 12 with two games on tap in the inaugural bill.
Admission is free. The first game is tentatively scheduled to start at 12 noon. The second contest will pit coach Lawrence Chongson’s Cobra Energy Drink Ironmen against coach Frankie Lim’s Maynilad Water Dragons.
As an added attraction, San Miguel Beer will play Smart Gilas in a regular Commissioner’s Cup match at 6 p.m. that night in the same venue.
“We expect the second D-League game to finish at about 4 p.m. so there will be a two-hour wait before the start of the PBA game,” said PBA media affairs bureau chief and special assistant to the commissioner Willie Marcial yesterday. “D-League players and team officials are welcome to watch the PBA game for free but unfortunately, we’re not able to open the gates to the public at no charge. We’ll sell tickets for the PBA game like we do for other PBA games.”
With the collapse of the PBL and Liga Pilipinas, the emergence of the D-League is a huge shot in the arm for local basketball. It provides a transition league for varsity players moving to the PBA and an opportunity for varsity teams to toughen up.
Marcial said PBA commissioner Chito Salud intends to stage two D-League conferences during a PBA season. Salud, operations and technical director Rickie Santos and Marcial will take charge of the D-League. No D-League commissioner will be named. Butch Maniego, formerly of the PBL, was recently appointed tournament supervisor in charge of administrative affairs, added Marcial.
The D-League’s initial cast lists 13 teams – Agri Nurture-FCA Cultivators (coach Arsenio Dysangco), Café France (coach Mon Jose), Cobra Energy Drink (Chongson), Blackwater Elite (coach Leo Isaac), Max Bond Super Glue Sumos (coach Pido Jarencio), Maynilad Water (Lim), NLex Road Warriors of Metro Pacific Tollways Corp. (coach Boyet Fernandez), Pharex Naproxen Sodium (coach Carlo Tan), PC Gilmore (coach Richard del Rosario), Cebuana Lhuillier Gems (coach Luigi Trillo, assistant Bong Hawkins), Junior Powerade Tigers (coach Ricky Dandan), RnW Pacific Pipes (coach Topex Robinson) and Freego Jeans (coach Leo Austria).
The tournament format calls for the 13 teams to be split into two groups. Comprising Group A are NLex, Freego, Pacific Pipes, Blackwater, Pharex and PC Gilmore. Making up Group B are Cebuana Lhuillier, Maynilad, Junior Powerade, Max Bond, Cobra Energy Drink, Café France and Agri Nurture-FCA. The eliminations will be a single round- robin in each group. Since Group A has six teams, each will play an extra game – the pairings to be decided by lottery. After the elimination, the top two finishers of each group gain outright tickets to the second round of the playoffs. The others move on to slug it out in knockout games until only two are left standing. The finals will be a best-of-three affair.
The age range for D-League players is 17-26. Marcial said D-League teams with PBA links may enlist rookies and sophomores from their affiliates. Freego, for instance, is linked to Air 21, Maynilad to Talk ‘N’ Text, NLex to Meralco, Junior Powerade to Powerade and Café France to Rain Or Shine.
The league would’ve welcomed 14 entries but the City of Antipolo withdrew at the last minute.
Junior Powerade’s lineup includes eight UP stalwarts. Among the Maroons are Magi Sison, Michael Gamboa and Moriah Joel Gingerich. Others in the cast are UE’s James Martinez, La Salle’s Bryan Ilad, Fil-Am Mark Jeffries of William Penn University and Fil-Am John Smith of the University of Hawaii.
Cebuana’s roster lists PBA veterans Vaughn Canta, Benedict Fernandez and Kelvin Gregorio. Trillo is also bringing in UST’s Alain Maliksi, UE’s Pari Llagas, University of the Visayas’ Ariel Mepana and Fil-Ams Matt Lee and A. J. Mandani. A surprise discovery is the six-foot Lee, a full-blooded Filipino (parents George and Maripaz) who made the UCLA varsity as a walk-on in 2006-07. Trillo said Lee is a Kenny Evans play-alike. Lee’s UCLA teammates included NBA veterans Arron Afflalo and Darren Collison. Lee was brought in by team owner Jean Henri Lhuillier through his San Francisco contact Marvin Quebeq.
Max Bond’s core will be from UST but the Sumos are reinforced by ABL hotshot Rudy Lingganay, Reynel Hugnatan’s brother Roel and PBA veteran Jun-Jun Cabatu. NLex will be bannered by PBA veteran Ogie Menor, five Fil-Ams (Ryan Reyes’ brother Christian, future first round draft shoo-in Clifford Hodge, Chris Giles, Karl Dehesa and Cody Tesoro), former UP star Woody Co, Erik Suguitan of San Beda, Jaypee Belencion of Letran, Erik Salamat of Ateneo and four San Sebastain standouts Pamboy Raymundo, Calvin Abueva, Ronald Pascual and Ian Sanggalang. PBA veteran Ford Arao is in the injured list.
Café France is suiting up 11 cagers from Centro Escolar University (CEU) and three recruits, NU’s Jewel Ponferrada, Jose Rizal’s Jay-R Bulangis and Fil-German Marvin Graebel. Heading the CEU cast are Leeward Lobaton, Grevani Rublico, Ryan Gallardo and J. P. Magbitang.
“We’re not a strong team compared to the lineups of the other teams,” said Mon Jose, a PBA veteran and Philippine coach in last year’s Youth Olympics in Singapore. “CEU’s monicker is the Scorpions but I still don’t know if we’ll end up using that.”
Del Rosario said he formed the PC Gilmore squad only the other day. Among his players are Carlo Lastimosa of St. Benilde, Mark Sarangay and Allan Mangahas of Mapua and Jam Cortes of Letran. “We’re mostly a mix of college players,” said Del Rosario, a former PBA player now a B-Meg assistant coach. “No ex-pros.”
Blackwater will lean on six standouts from Arellano University led by Andrian Celada, an NCAA mythical five pick. Others in the roster include Gio Ciria Cruz, Jonathan Belorio of Letran, Ian Mazo and Jerby del Rosario of Mapua and Joshua Saret who once shot 83 points in a single NCAA juniors game.

PBA D-League draws 14 teams, 3 PBL squads jump ship
The PBDL has already attracted a total of 14 teams, with Café France, Cebuana Lhuillier and Freego Jeans becoming the latest participants in this event patterned after the National Basketball Association Development League (NBDL) in the United States.
The league will hold its opening ceremonies on March 12 at The Arena in San Juan.
Bernard Yang, a long-time team manager of Hapee Toothpaste in the PBL, confirmed that Café France will bring in the core of the Centro Escolar University Scorpions. The team is a regular competitor in the National Athletic Association of Schools, Colleges and Universities.
Yang was asked by Café France management to help form the team.
“We’re helping the CEU sports program, and the owner of Café France is a good friend, so they asked for my help,” said Yang. “Pero nagpaalam naman ako sa bossing namin sa Hapee if puwede akong tumulong sa Café France, and he agreed.”
Yang represented Hapee during the team representatives’ meeting last week. The company, which backed the 2002 all-pro national cage team to the Busan Asian Games, decided not to join this season.
“Gusto muna sigurong tingnan if the PBDL will be a success,” said Yang.
Cebuana Lhuillier, also a former backer of the national men’s basketball team for several years and a prominent fixture in local caging, decided to make a comeback via the PBDL.
The company, which also supports local softball and the tennis team to the Davis Cup event, backed the all-amateur men’s basketball team which won the gold medal in the 2003 Southeast Asian Games.
“We have always supported grassroots development in sports. Also, this is in line with our partnership with Spirit Sports Program, whose vision is to serve as a gateway for the players to find their future in sports. We discussed this with Commissioner Salud and agreed to start with the D-League first and probably look at the program down the road,” said Cebuana Lhuillier boss man Jean Henri Lhuillier.
Freego Jeans, former outfitter of Air21 in the PBA, will participate as an independent member and not as an affiliate of the Express, according to PBA commissioner Atty. Chito Salud.
“Stand-alone — that’s the status of Freego’s participation,” said Salud, who added that all team representatives of the PBDL will gather for the first team members’ meeting on Monday, Feb. 21, 2 p.m. at the PBA Office in Libis, Quezon City.
Regular competing teams will need to pay P300,000 to join the tournament, while an affiliate member of a mainstay PBA squad will only need to shell out half of the required entry fee.
