Players Show Off Their Skills at Triple Threat Manila 3×3 Ultimate Showdown Tournament

Players from various regions of the Philippines came together as a team to show off their talents in playing the sport they truly loved in the Triple Threat Manila 3×3 Ultimate Showdown Tournament, held at the College covered courts of the Ateneo University last September 16, 2017. Their perseverance and passion manifested as they dribble and shoot the ball and from the minute they arrived the court, their faces showed how excited they were to play and represent their teams despite the anxiousness of competing with players with different level of skills.
Opening ceremonies guest Danny Siegle, 1999 PBA Rookie of the Year, 4-time PBA Finals MVP, 2-time best player of the conference and 8-time PBA Champion, inspired the participants with words of wisdom for the one-day tourney. The 128 players then were all set for a war in the half court. So as the games moved on the young aspiring athletes (18 Under) and agile veterans (Open Men) huddled up and patiently waited for their teams to be called for a hard court just.
Team Unnotified swept their division boasting a 6 out of 6 record, led by Lance De Leon who finished with a total of 30 points for the entire series (number 1 in scoring). Second place MRHS Vanguard A scored finished the rankings with only two losses and was led by Nathiel Del Pilar who punched in 27 monster points in all the games. On the side of the spectrum, The Espana boys also swept the competition winning 6/6 games led by Ace Gocuan who finished with a total of 51 points (number 1 in scoring). 2nd place Pound Congressional only had two losses led by the intense scoring of Reiner Hipolito who scored a total of 47 points.
Finals MVP for Open Men went to Jomari Beredo of team Espana who clocked in 10 pts 1 steal and 2 rebounds against rival Pound Congressional. Finals MVP for 18 and under Lance De Leon finished with 7 points 1 rebound and 1 block against a grueling match against MRHS Vanguard A.
After the sky has finally cleared everyone was pleased with the successful event of Triple Threat Manila. Most of the team captains and players said that they hope for more events like this in the future as it gives the youth and adults the chance to experience an organized 3×3 FIBA-endorsed basketball game with some even envisioning themselves as participants in the international stage. The satisfaction of having played and the lingering taste of adrenaline manifested with each smile in the court and so though some have failed to grab the championship title every team took home with them the experience and the new friendships built.

The 3×3 Ultimate Showdown became more than just a competition of abilities but rather a community of aspiring pro-athletes united in zeal and grittiness towards the goal of someday representing the country. It was indeed an ultimate showdown worthy of recognition.

Baseline 3×3 Basketball Boot Camp Day 2

The aspiring champions of the 3×3 basketball booth camp are back in action! With their fundamentals in mind and their form in check, they arrived at the Ateneo de Manila University courts last Sept 9, 2017, with confidence and anticipation.
What began in day 1 as regular warm-up drills leveled up to a timed endurance test with each participant aiming to beat their previous record. The real challenge started with the in-game application of the fundamentals of 3×3 Basketball. Unlike the usual 5 man basketball play the 3×3 game mechanics move with a clock work faster than any railway train in the country. Starting from a coin toss and with only 12 seconds on the shot clock the first team of 3 players to garner 21 points within a 10-minute time frame wins the game

3X3 Baseline Boot Camp DAY 2 As the clock began to tick the team on the offensive stance were taught to maximize the time and the half court space which principally place them closer to the basket. Strategic passing with mindful dribbling and shooting within proper bounds were taught under time pressure. On the other hand the team on the defense were practiced their reaction time and were trained to steal, block and form a defense that would rival that of Helm’s Deep and as coach John Ramirez instructed it must be a kind of defense prepared to stop even a PBA player.
3X3 Baseline Boot Camp DAY 2 “What separates your practice from the others?” this was one of the questions that former PBA player and UAAP Men’s Basketball Sports Analyst, Christian Luanzon asked in a group lecture. He shared not only his experience in basketball but his life adversities which at a young age he faced without much direction until his mind was renewed and transformed with the word of God and he became Christian not only by name but also in faith. His personal sharing with the team made the campers think that more than just a game, basketball can be a means to serve others and develop a discipline of hard work not by sheer human exertion but through the grace of God. He instilled that why you do something is as important as what you do and thus ending his discourse with the encouragement, “Do everything for the glory of His name”
Triple Threat Manila and its partners; Toby’s, RSR Athletics, Wilson, Powcast.net Sports Hub are thankful for the 2-day Baseline 3×3 Basketball Boot Camp which would not have been a success without the participation of dedicated volunteers and these aspiring pro-athletes (in their respective categories):
18 and Above: Bryan James Obispo, Dwayne Joshua Rafael, Francis Joseph Grey, Kelly Matt Camorongan, Alexander Dominic Tadeo, Houston Villanueva, Kit Obedoza, Joshua Mutya, Christopher Uy, Joseph Reuben Bautista, Duane Dulay, Christian Arriola
17 and under: Ryan Adami, Karol Barbadillo, Ncine Pepito, McKen Santos, Rye Jezreel Maverick Garing, John Kenneth Hubo, Carlos Louie Santos, Ray Gabriel Bugtai, Joseph Acuna, Justin Iceley Manansala, Christian Caling, Migo Sulit, Christian Glenn Risos, Daniel Paul Madlangbayang, James Brandon Sangalang, Nicail Pepito.
As the Baseline 3×3 Basketball Boot Camp ended, the hard earned sweat, improved skills and the character of a determined and humbled athlete were the take home of the campers. Their journey towards their basketball dreams advances on September 16 as they join a sea of players with over 20 teams competing in the exciting sprint like a game of 3×3 basketball in Triple Threat Manila’s 3×3 Ultimate Showdown. The question that remains is: who will reign as champion?

Baseline, 3×3 Basketball Boot Camp Day 1

Are you an avid fan of basketball but feel you don’t have enough skills to play the game? Or are you already a player that wishes to recalibrate his techniques?
If you answered yes, then put on your basketball shoes,  suit up in your jerseys and prepare your mind and body because Triple Threat Manila organized the Baseline, a 3×3 Basketball Boot Camp that would awaken the athlete in you with vigorous drills and training from the best coaches in the field!
The first day of Baseline was successfully launched last September 2, 2017 at Ateneo de Manila University Quezon City by Triple Threat Manila in partnership with Toby’s, RSR Athletics, Wilson, Powcast.net Sports Hub,  and with Coach John Ramirez – a Pro-Athlete, multi-awarded and former PBA Assistant Coach – as the head coach of the event.

The Baseline, 3-day camp started its kickoff with warm up drills that tested the stamina of the participants from basic stretches, high knees, lunges, and to full court run-on footwork which prepared them for the next 3 hours of rigorous training. The coaches first taught the fundamentals of passing, shooting, and dribbling with one drill after the other. As the players catch their breath the desire to improve emanated from their perseverance in each set. The fundamentals are the foundation in any sport but together with that must the passion and true grit to progress.
Since basketball is a tactical and ethical sport, a lecture on the rules of the game and techniques to avoid fouling were integrated to embed a strategic mindset as they play in the court.
“Excellence, teamwork and humility” these were the core values echoed by Coach Mon Casuga in a team lecture. He enlightened the players that more than building the physique it was also important to shape the principles because together with their abilities they also bring with them their attitudes in court.
A fast-paced scrimmage game concluded the day and showcased the techniques that the players learned. Though still rough on some edges the potential to develop through more practice and training were evident. Regardless of age, skill and relations the random team up of players demonstrated their flexible team dynamics and strengths.
Tired but satisfied the participants went home looking forward to the next day of the boot camp. And though they have still much to learn they knew that legends are not made overnight, nonetheless all of them have begun somewhere and for the 28 players in the camp, they have made their first step and their journey has just started and it begins here at Baseline, 3×3 Basketball Boot Camp.

Coach Paolo Tejuco, Baseline’s Strength and Conditioning Coach speaks about one of the most neglected part of any training program.

Warm up.

Just like what Coach Paolo said, warming up is very important as it’s purpose is to prepare one’s body for physical activity. It should help increase body temperature, heart rate and breathing rate. Warm up generally also helps you mentally prepare for exercise.

BASELINE .. A STARTING POINT

(BASELINE) Triple Threat Manila is organized by Varxity Org who envisions the development of a world – class Filipino athletes. Headed by Kriza Cawan, who wants to provide not just games but also to educate young Filipino’s around the nation the importance of building a holistic program for our future athletes. In this event, BASELINE they will teach you not the skills and the rules of playing the 3×3 basketball, but they will help you understand and realized the importance of PREPARATION.
PREPARATION: according to WEBSTER dictionary it means the action or process of making something ready for use or service or of getting ready for some occasion, test, or duty.
An action or process, that sounds big. Everyone needs to prepare in any aspect of life. Not just on sports, but in everyday life. In this case, coach Paolo (yours truly) and coach Kriza shares the same drive to inform players (and the future) that educating them in the early stage in crucial to their future.
WARM – UP…  By far the most underrated part of every training program, aside from the periodization, warm – up plays a key role in preparing ourselves in engaging to any physical activity. A lot of studies have been done all over the world in doing the warm up the right way. One study by our very own countrymen coach Jeffrey Pagaduan, CSCS in regards to Warm Up protocols, revealed that  a general warm-up and a general warm-up with dynamic stretching posted the greatest gains among all interventions. On the other hand, no warm-up and passive static stretching displayed the least results in countermovement jump performance. In conclusion, countermovement jump performance preceded by a general warm-up or a general warm-up with dynamic stretching posted superior gains in countermovement jump performance (Pagaduan 2012).
Take a good read at the abstract, at some point in there it is better to have a warm – up than no warm up at all. And the least they used in preparation is the common static stretching which is known world wide. It is like, when someone said “Have your warm-up.” Static Stretching is the first thing in mind for them to do. Although it has an improvement in our body. However, other forms of warm – up have showed significant improvement in athletic performance. Of course… COOL DOWN is also important as a WARM – UP. We want our body to recover efficiently after a series of bouts.
THIS is what the BASELINE is all about. A STARTING POINT. We will show and teach you how it is done. We will start of with an warm up program called FIFA 11+ it is developed by FIFA Medical Assessment and Research Centre(F-MARC) , the programme was based on a randomised controlled study and one countrywide campaign in amateur football that significantly reduced injuries and healthcare costs. Since the FIFA 11+ launch, key publications have confirmed the preventive effects of the programme and have evaluated its performance effects in female as well as male amateur football players. Furthermore, implementation strategies of this prevention programme have also been studied. The goal of this narrative review was to summarise the available scientific evidence about the FIFA 11+ programme. While FIFA continues to disseminate and implement FIFA 11+ among its Member Associations, adaptations of the injury prevention programme for children and referees have been developed and are currently being evaluated (Bizzini 2012) and it is not just used in FOOTBALL, but also in BASKETBALL.
Published by Longo et. al (2012) During the 9-month season, 23 (19%) of the 121 players included in the study sustained a total of 31 injuries (14 in the intervention group and 17 in the control group). In the intervention group, injury rates per 1000 athlete-exposures were lower than those in the control group, with statistical significance, for overall injuries (0.95 vs 2.16; P = .0004), training injuries (0.14 vs 0.76; P = .007), lower extremity injuries (0.68 vs 1.4; P = .022), acute injuries (0.61 vs 1.91; P < .0001), and severe injuries (0 vs 0.51; P = .004). The intervention group also had statistically significant lower injury rates for trunk (0.07 vs 0.51; P = .013), leg (0 vs 0.38; P = .007), and hip and groin (0 vs 0.25; P = .023) compared with the control group. There was no statistically significant difference in match injuries, knee injuries, ankle injuries, and overuse injuries between 2 groups. The most frequent acute injury diagnoses were ligament sprains (0.41 and 0.38 in the intervention and control groups, respectively; P < .006) and contractures (0.76 and 0.07 in the control and intervention groups, respectively; P < .003).
ALL IN ALL Conclusion: The FIFA 11+ warm-up program is effective in reducing the rates of injuries in elite male basketball players.
This warm – up will help our athletes to at least follow a certain process of warming up that could help them improve their athletic performance and learning for the long term athletic development.
