The Curious Case of Chris Ellis: Have We Seen The Last of Him?

Will Airforce Ellis take flight again in the PBA?

Where is Chris Ellis?

Chris Ellis was drafted in the PBA by Ginebra as the 6th overall pick in 2012. The 6’4 shooting guard from Oceanside, California immediately made an impact in the league as he charmed fans with good looks and his ability to take flight.
In 2013, Chris Ellis further added a feather to his cap at an early stage in his career and became a PBA All-Star and a slam dunk champion.
He was on his way.

Chris Ellis’ career, however, didn’t quite take flight like his dunking ability. Averaging as high as only 8 points in his first year, his point average has dwindled down every year but his loyal following stuck with him. Unfortunately though, the team which drafted him has suddenly changed direction and traded him for Art Dela Cruz.

Crash Landing for Ellis

Chris Ellis spent a good five years with the most popular club in the PBA, Ginebra, and after all the experiences and the bonding moments the shooting guard has definitely developed a relationship with his teammates beyond basketball. The news about him being traded probably came as a surprised and unfortunately, most people think that he was not able to take it well enough.  His tweets, his none attendance at practice and being hospitalized only added to what seemed to be a fading career for Chris Ellis.

Will Airforce be back?

The Chris Ellis Saga is still ongoing but Blackwater Dioceldo Sy thinks it may be over. Blackwater has patiently waited for Chris Ellis but unfortunately, he is a hard man to come by these days and the management may have lost its patience and was looking to trade him again after showing no interest to play with Blackwater.

Blackwater tried to trade Chris but there were no takers. As capable as he is, it looks like teams are looking beyond just the physical capability and the current state of Chris maybe questionable to other teams.
Ellis’ last cryptic message. Did Chris Ellis already say goodbye? What is he up to these days? The above is the last official tweet of Ellis and while his PBA career might potentially be on hold, and according to his last tweet, Chris Ellis is still excited about his future. We do not know exactly if this future still includes basketball but what we do know that thousands of fans are hoping that he would come back and play again.

Chris Ellis Took His Frustration to Twitter, Will not be Available to play Against his Former Team Ginebra

Chris Ellis is having the worst week of his life

Chris Ellis strectched, sad
After a blockbuster trade that sent Dave Marcelo and Chris Ellis to Blackwater, the fans still could not get over what happened and it maybe the same for Chris Ellis.
The 28-year old Chris Ellis was one of the fan favorites in Ginebra. Born in California, the high flying slam dunk champion was drafted by Ginebra and played his PBA career under the same team since 2012.
Chris Ellis got obviously too attached to the team and did not take the news well as it was reported that he broke out in tears when he heard the news. This was confirmed by LA Tenorio during my conversation with the point guard.
Chris Ellis was scheduled to play in a game that will pit him against his former team Ginebra but for some reason, his body did not also cooperate. According to our sources, Chris Ellis was taken to the hospital due to muscle cramps and was recommended to get a break from playing.
Ellis vented out his frustration on twitter stating that this is the worst week of his life.

Chris Ellis was a part of  the 2016 PBA Governors Cup Champion team of Ginebra.

By now it is no secret, the 2013 slam dunk champion and 28-year-old Chris Ellis has been traded to Blackwater for the 25-year-old Art Dela Cruz. While there were multiple rumors in the past surrounding potential trade, no one seemed to believe that it will happen or at least it will happen soon.
Yesterday, as per sources, the trade was finally revealed and fans had mixed reactions.
Ginebra would receive Art Dela Cruz and Raymund Aguilar while Blackwater Elite will accept Chris Ellis and Dave Marcelo both of which has been instrumental in the team.

Ginebra Routs San Miguel, 110-84

Chris Ellis tries to score against San Miguel’s Marcio Lassiter and June Mar Fajardo

Smart Araneta Coliseum – The Barangay Ginebra outlasted the San Miguel Beermen and boosts their hunt for twice to beat advantage after defeating the Beermen with a 26 points differential, 110-84.

It was a close first quarter and a see saw battle before the Kings pulled away starting from the second quarter until the final buzzer. From that the Kings never looked away.

Ginebra demolished the beermen with their tight defense that forced too many turnovers for the Beermen. They allowed the Beermen to scored 84 points only while dropping 110 against their opponent.

Othyus Jeffers led the Kings with 22 points and 13 rebounds while Greg Slaughter added 18 points. Chris Ellis, who had a poor game against the TNT, bounces back with 15 points, 7 rebounds and 3 assists. He was named best player of the game.

Tyler Wilkerson led the Beermen with 20 points and 16 rebounds in a losing effort. Reigning MVP June Mar Fajardo was limited to 14 points and 4 rebounds.

Ginebra improved to 6-4 record and officially claimed an outright quarterfinals berth while the Beermen dropped to a 5-3 record.

The scores:
GINEBRA 110 – Jeffers 22, Slaughter 18, Ellis 15, Aguilar 14, Tenorio 11, Mercado 10, Caguioa 9, Thompson 5, Marcelo 2, Mariano 2, Salva 2, Helterbrand 0.
SAN MIGUEL 84 – Wilkerson 20, Fajardo 14, Lassiter 12, Cabagnot 11, Espinas 10, Ross 9, Santos 6, De Ocampo 2, Arana 0, Heruela 0, Lutz 0, Reyes 0, Semerad 0, Tubid 0.
Quarters: 16-14, 52-36, 78-64, 110-84

What Should Ginebra Do to End their Title Drought?

With the takeover of CTC as head coach of the team this season, the Barangay Ginebra are expected
to end their eight year title drought. Unfortunately, the team failed to do so in the AFC after the
controversial loss and quarterfinal exit against the GlobalPort Batang Pier. But they still have 2 conferences to lived up the expectations or else, another failed season. Let us examine what are they
need to do to finally take home the trophy this season.

a. Scottie Thompson – The very promising rookie out of the Perpetual Help Atlas had make an impression last conference.  He is an all around player and is a very energetic player. He could be the new spark off the bench for Ginebra. Scottie will fill the statsheet every game if given a chance. Based on P.E.R., Thompson is a very efficient player.

b. Nico Salva – Salva had a great collegiate career from Ateneo and we know what he can do inside the court if given a chance. CTC can develop this guy into something special. He can provide some shooting and scoring for the team. He could be the today’s Sunday Salvacion or Mark Macapagal for Ginebra.

This is what I think the missing piece in Barangay Ginebra’s title quest. Chris Ellis hasn’t shown improvement on his offensive game. And I think its time for them to part with him. They can trade him for the likes of Rey Guevarra, Anthony Semerad or Ronald Pascual plus future picks.

Greg Slaughter is the only consistent contributor in Barangay Ginebra bigs and Japeth Aguilar should be the other one. If he will only be consistent together with Slaughter, they will be a force to reckon with every night. Japeth needs to do something with his game or else he would end up playing for another team.

4. SOL MERCADO should be the “SIXTH MAN”

Sol Mercado is a combo guard so he can be the reliever of either L.A. Tenorio or Mark Caguioa. I see him as a great team leader that could guide this team to the championship. You can see the “Never Say Die” spirit on him. If he can average atleast 13 points and 5 assists a game off the bench, Ginebra will be back to the Finals.

Joe Devance and Jervy Cruz need to provide some scoring off the bench. They should be the reliever of Japeth Aguilar and Greg Slaughter. If this two will be consistent and will contribute every game together with Slaughter and Aguilar, Ginebra would be unstoppable.
