Miguel Cotto: December 31 Will Be My Last Day as Pro Boxer

4-division 5-time world champion Miguel Cotto is already thinking of his retirement during his interview with ESPN Deportes. Former world champion Cotto told the ESPN Deportes that December 31, 2017 (maybe his second fight this year) will be his last day as professional boxer.
“We are doing very well as far as the camp, hoping that the days will pass and that the preparation will intensify a little next week, and then we’ll lower the loads and look towards the fight,” said Cotto to ESPN Deportes.
“I’ve been enjoying boxing a lot. It’s my last year in boxing, it’s time to go do other things. December 31, 2017 will be the last day of Miguel Cotto as a professional boxer.”
“There is a good litter of Puerto Rican boxers coming up. All you have to do is work hard and not rest until you reach the goal. Puerto Rican boxing has always stood out with good talents. Right now there are Acosta, Machado, Verdejo… they are some that are the most advanced.”
36 year-old Miguel Cotto (40-5,33)  is scheduled to fight for the vacant WBO Junior Welterweight world title against Japanese Yoshiro Kamegaion (27-2-3,24) August 26th at Stub Hub Center in Carson California.

Brawl Alert: Miguel Cotto is Fighting Yoshiro Kamegai for the Vacant WBO World Title

The 36 year old former foe of Manny Pacquiao is finally set to fight Japan Yoshiro Kamegai for the vacant WBO Junior Middleweight World title that was vacated by Saul Alvarez.
Miguel Cotto last fought November 21, 20015 were he faced Saul Alvarez and lost via unanimous decision in Las Vegas. Cotto has been inactive since recent break up with his former promoter Jay-Z of Roc Nation gave Golden Boy Promotion a chance to slip in and make the fight happen.
Meanwhile, the 34 year old Japanese last fought and won against Jesus Soto Karass in a rematch last September 10, 2016 in California.
The fight will be held at the Stub Hub Center in California.

The Reason Why Cotto and Kirkland Was Cancelled

2017 promises a lot of great upcoming fights. Boxing fans are simply looking forward to each of them but today one of the anticipated fights was cancelled.  Your dream turned into a nightmare.
Cotto and Kirkland, boxing event titled The Return would have to be postponed as Kirkland suffered a nose injury that made him unable to compete on February 25.  Both of them are coming from a long layoff in boxing and look to return with a bang but unfortunately it has to wait.
Could Cotto find a replacement instead?

Cotto eager to avenge his defeats

by: Pow Salud|Home

Miguel Cotto lost only twice in his professional career, first is with Antonio Margarito and the last one is with the best pound for pound boxer of the world Manny Pacquiao.
These lost are hunting Miguel Cotto and as a matter of fact his trainer Steward said that Cotto might retire only after he avenges these defeats. Miguel Cotto is an exceptional fighter and on December 3 he will get his chance to prove himself once again and defeat the first man who give him his first lost. It will not be an easy task as Antonio Margarito will not go down easy. If Cotto is successful with this fight he could get an opportunity to get a rematch with Manny Pacquiao as well.

Cotto stops Mayorga to retain WBA title

(AFP) LAS VEGAS, Nevada (AFP) – Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto kept his World Boxing Association super welterweight crown by stopping Ricardo Mayorga of Nicaragua 53 seconds into the 12th round.

Cotto inflicted the only knockdown of the fight in the opening seconds of the last round during an exchange with a stunning left hook, staggering Mayorga, who went down on his knees and grabbed his left hand in pain.
“This hook was the one to decide the fight,” Cotto said after Saturday’s bout. “The whole fight was great but the finish was amazing.”
Mayorga rose and continued for a few seconds, but Cotto landed a stinging left to Mayorga’s chest and seconds later, the challenger stopped the fight, saying he could not continue because of his injured hand.
“My left arm, in one of those combinations, I felt it hit to the back of my hand and it started hurting,” Mayorga said. “I started trying to make a fist and I couldn’t. Then I said I couldn’t continue.”

Cotto improved to 36-2 with his 29th stoppage inside the distance in his first fight after a nine-month layoff that included right shoulder surgery.
Former world welterweight champion Mayorga fell to 29-8 with one drawn only three months after ending a 26-month layoff, then saying he would retire.
“I’m going to look for a job,” Mayorga said. “It’s time to retire.
Mayorga taunted Cotto in the weeks before the fight but told him after the bout, “I never meant any of those things. It’s all promotion. It’s all entertainment.” Cotto in turn never let the verbal sparring disturb his focus.
“He did not take me out from my calm.” Cotto said. “I just keep in my work and just be myself.”
Impressive exchanges began in the opening seconds, with referee Robert Byrd warning Mayorga about blows behind the head and low blows in round one.
Mayorga took a pair of hard lefts to the head, then shook his head to indicate they did not hurt him, a routine that played out throughout the fight.
In round two, Mayorga landed a solid uppercut and a pair of chopping right hands to the head, but Cotto answered with solid lefts, taking advantage of moments when the challenger tried to slow the intense pace.
Mayorga backed himself into a corner midway into the third round, taunting Cotto to come at him. The champion did press the attack, but would not be lured into letting down his poise and patience to brawl against the crafty veteran.
Cotto, coming off right shoulder surgery, showed no sign of trouble throwing right hands with strong punches and jabs.
Mayorga, who turned 38 on Thursday, had vowed to knock out Cotto in the fourth round but failed, although he did land five consecutive blows in a flurry at the finish.
Cotto, 30, had the best of several exchanges in the fifth round, scoring with solid left hooks and uppercuts.
“He hits really hard (but) he didn’t scare me,” Mayorga said of Cotto.
Mayorga stung Cotto early in round seven with a left to the body and solid rights to the head and again late in the round with an uppercut and several hard rights.
“Pretty strong fighter,” Cotto said of Mayorga. “He has pretty strong hands. He can win. He can beat anybody.”
Cotto used his jab to attack consistently but Mayorga counter-punched effectively with right flurries in the ninth and 10th.
Mayorga resumed taunting Cotto midway into the 11th round but the champion kept his focus and kept the challenger at bay, setting up the dramatic finish.
If Mayorga sticks to his decision to retire, he’ll have lost five of his final nine career fights. He also fell to Shane Mosley in 2008, Oscar de la Hoya in 2006, Felix Trinidad in 2004 and Cory Spinks in 2003.
Cotto now hopes for a chance to avenge a 2009 loss to Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao or a 2008 loss to Mexico’s Antonio Margarito, whose victory was tainted by a one-year ban after glove tampering was discovered in the fight after he beat Cotto.

Among other potential future rivals is Mexico’s unbeaten Saul Alvarez, the World Boxing Council super welterweight champion.

Mayorga faces champion Cotto, eyes Pacquiao

source: Agence France-Presse

LAS VEGAS, Nevada – Ricardo Mayorga is barely back from a two-year layoff but he has a world title fight against Miguel Cotto and a hunger to turn that into a chance to face Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao.

Puerto Rico’s Cotto defends his World Boxing Association super welterweight crown on Saturday against Nicaraguan Mayorga, a fellow former world welterweight champion.

This is the fight where I’m going to impose my will,” Mayorga said. “I want to get a fight with Pacquiao. I have to knock out Cotto to prove I deserve it.

“If I happen to beat him by decision, I’m feeling I don’t deserve to fight Manny Pacquiao. That’s how strong I feel about this fight.

“But I know I’m going to knock out this clown.”

On the undercard, Australia’s unbeaten Leonardo Zappavigna, 25-0 with 17 knockouts, also fights for a world title, facing Miguel Vazquez, 27-3 with 12 knockouts, for the Mexican’s International Boxing Federation lightweight crown.

Cotto is 35-2 with 28 knockouts and the 30-year-old comes off a 2009 loss to Pacquiao and a ninth-round stoppage of Israel’s Yuri Foreman last June. He takes Mayorga’s verbal sparring calmly.

Trash talking doesn’t mean anything to me. You don’t win your fights talking,” Cotto said. “You win in the ring. That’s where I’m going to win.

“He doesn’t have the skills. He’s only brawling. I’ll capitalize on every mistake and I expect a lot of mistakes.”

Mayorga is 29-7 with one drawn and 23 knockouts, but the 37-year-old fighter had a 26-month layoff after car crash injuries until stopping American Michael Walker in the ninth round last December, his first early stoppage win in nearly eight years.

Mayorga has lost four of his past eight fights, falling to Shane Mosley in 2008, Oscar de la Hoya in 2006, Felix Trinidad in 2004 and Cory Spinks in 2003.

But he thinks he has plenty left for Cotto and Pacquiao, who has not lost in six years.

“No one is unbeatable. Manny is just a human being like everyone else,” said Mayorga. “I wouldn’t come in with any fear and wouldn’t be tentative.

“When I knock out Manny Pacquiao I will become the most famous fighter of all time. That’s what I’m working for.”

Another possible foe would be the winner of Saturday’s World Boxing Council super welterweight showdown in Anaheim, California, between Britain’s Matthew Hatton and unbeaten Mexican Saul Alvarez.

That crown was vacated by Pacquiao, who will fight Mosley on May 7 in Las Vegas.

Cotto trainer Emanuel Steward expects Cotto will flatten Mayorga within four rounds.

“I don’t think the fight is going over four rounds. I just don’t see Mayorga going too long with the power punching of Miguel,” Steward said.

Cotto plans to work inside and deny Mayorga punching room to instigate a brawling style.

“No one has had an easy fight with Mayorga,” Steward said. “He’s going for a home run with every punch he swings. You have to respect that. We expect a crazy fight, as long as it lasts.”

Mayorga, who has trained in Florida, calls Cotto and Steward “clowns” and “failures” and vows to test Cotto in ways the champion has never been challenged.

“I’ve been working on my boxing style and most heavily in this training camp on my power. Those are going to pose the greatest problems for Miguel,” Mayorga said.

He’s not the hardest puncher I have faced. He doesn’t like when they go down to the body and the uppercut always gets to him. Every time his mettle gets tested he goes back.”

Cotto said he plans to go to Mayorga’s head and body: “I’m going to the body, going upstairs, I’m coming with everything and I’m prepared to do everything I need to do in order to win.”

Relentless: Cotto vs. Mayorga will be aired on ABS-CBN Channel 2 starting 10:15 a.m. Sunday. There will also be a replay on Studio 23 at 2 p.m.

Pacquiao to apply Cotto training regimen vs Margarito

source:  http://www.gmanews.tv/

Against the biggest opponent he’ll ever face in his career, Manny Pacquiao is applying the same kind of training regimen he did in beating Puerto Rican Miguel Cotto.

Pacquiao believes two months of intense training – the first half in the mountains of Baguio and the final leg at the comforts of the Wild Card gym in Los Angeles – will be good enough for him to get in shape for his November 13 title bout with the massive and ever dangerous Antonio Margarito.

Training camp begins on September 20 at the Cooyesan Hotel in the country’s summer capital, the same place where a built-in ring was made to accommodate Pacquiao and his entourage while preparing for his World Boxing Organization (WBO) welterweight fight against Cotto last year.
One by one, Pacquiao’s training team will come over here, starting with conditioning coach Alex Ariza on September 13, and then followed by chief trainer Freddie Roach and sparring partner Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

“We’ll follow the same routine I used when I was training for my fight against Cotto,” said Pacquiao when GMANews.TV caught up with him at the New World Hotel late Wednesday during the Development Partners’ Night, a fund raising event the boxing star hosted for the planned establishment of a district hospital in the province of Sarangani, where he also serves as congressman.

Pacquiao beat Cotto in their 2009 meeting at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas, pulling off a technical knockout win in the 12th round of a bloody and action-packed match.

Margarito, who stands at 5-foot-11, also scored an impressive knockout win over Cotto two years ago, a result that later would be tainted in the light of the illegal hand wrapping scandal the Mexican boxing star from Tijuana got involved with moments before his title bout with Sugar Shane Mosley.

Unlike Cotto and Joshua Clottey – the last two men Pacquiao fought in the ring – the 31-year-old Filipino ring idol admitted not having seen Margarito fought in person.

Still that doesn’t make him bothered opposite the man they dubbed the ‘Tijuana Tornado.’

Former Manila mayor Lito Atienza, one of Pacquiao’s closest advisors, however, feels differently.

Atienza considers the 32-year old Mexican brawler a very dangerous opponent for the Pacman, even going to the extent of referring to him as a ‘mountain.’

“He’s a mountain. Manny needs to prepare hard for this fight. The guy’s a giant,” Atienza told GMANews.TV during the same fund-raising affair.

“It’s going to be a tough fight, so Manny has to prepare hard against Margarito. I’m a bit worried, but I know Manny can beat him,” added the former Manila mayor. – JVP, GMANews.TV
