Lithuania was Too Big and Too Strong for Gilas Pilipinas, Breaking Down the Stats

Lithuania showed Gilas Pilipinas who the boss is, out playing the young team in almost all categories.

Gilas Pilipinas started the game well and led with 22 -17 at the end of the first quarter. Unfortunately, it will be the last time Philippines will get its taste of the lead as the Lithuanian used their size and shooting to give the Philippines its 3rd defeat in the Jones Cup tournament.
The loss means that they are less likely to finish on the podium, unless Canada, Lithuania, and South Korea, the top 3 teams now in the standing, also the  same 3 teams that beat the Philippines, suddenly start losing, which is very unlikely.
The Lithuanians were shooting very well at 77% from the 2 point line and 39% beyond the arc. They even doubled the 3-point production of the Philippines. Lithuania also gave the Philippines a tough time on the board as they grabbed 32 rebounds against 23 of the Philippines. But that wasn’t all, the Lithuanians were also sharing the ball well with 19 assists against 8 of the Philippines.

Final Score 91 Lithuania – 80 Philippines.

The next game of the Philippines will be against India and Iran.

Christian Standhardinger was Thrown out by his Coach After Committing a Technical Foul

Christian Standhardinger Too Passionate or Just Defiant?

It is not the first time that we have heard the news that the Filipino-German Christian Standhardinger was involved in a brawl or a debate, whether it’s against his coach or another player. Before the Jones Cup, Calvin Abueva and Standhardinger had their altercation together during a scrimmage between the national team and Alaska Aces. Both players down played the incident.
Now at the Jones Cup, Christian Standhardinger was at the center of attention once again but this time it’s for a good reason. He was playing hard ball and hustling every game that immediately got him praises from the fans and even from his teammates and coach.  But behind these commendations, there were also comments about him answering and being resistant to his coach.
Against Qatar, we have seen a frustrated Standhardinger who collected 5 fouls that resulted in him only being able to play 9:11 minutes. Nothing was going right and emotions were pouring as Standhardinger played physical ball game against Iraq who is also being physical against him. He was doing his job, however, last night’s game must have gone to his head as he was doing unnecessary things that irked the coaches and even his team mates.
At one point in the game, he even looked like he has thrown a punch in the gut of an Iraqi player who went down for a good minute before even recovering. During the last few minutes of the game, he also initiated unnecessary contact that resulted in a technical foul.
While he was walking off the court he was talking to his coach as if he was pointing the scoreboard that the technical foul he committed was not going to cost them the game. But Gilas Pilipinas Coach Chot Reyes was having none of it and threw him out of the court for good.
Is this a case of Christian Standhardinger being too passionate?
Do you think he can get his emotion in check?

Did Coach Chot over reacted by throwing him out?

Gilas Pilipinas Put Down Iraq in a Physical Ball Game 84-75

Physicality was on display during the game between Iraq and Philippines at the 6th day of the 39th Jones Cup in Taipei.
Both teams were fighting for possessions and bodies were being sacrificed.  Iraq and the Philippines have 3 wins and 2 losses coming into the game and both teams are determined to grab the critical 4th win as the standing of teams are becoming more crowded. A win can put either of the team in a podium finish.
Iraq started the games very well led by  Dhulfiqar Al-hchaimi who scored 7 points right of the gates but the Iraqis suddenly run dry as they could not find a bucket only scoring 3 points in the second quarter against 21 points of the Philippines.
The Philippines capitalized on the momentum on the second half as they continued to pour in points. Iraq in the fourth tried to mount a comeback and was able to come to as close as 6 points but still fell short as the game ended with the 84-75 score, giving the Philippines its 4 wins in 6 games.
Iraq was carried by Mayfield who scored a total of 29 points followed by Al-Hchaimi with 17 total points.  Although the Iraqis were physical they were out rebounded by the Philippines 43-28.
Five players from the Philippines were in double figures led by Import Mike Myers who got 16 points and also grabbed a whopping 18 rebounds. Kiefer Ravena and Jio Jalolon point guard combo were also clicking tonight as they have a combined 23 points.
Christian Standhardinger wasn’t his usual self, he played only 9 minutes, scored 4 points and collected 5 fouls. He was even thrown out by his own coach due to unnecessary actions that resulted into a technical foul.
The next assignment of the Philippines will be Lithuania.

Watch the Much Awaited, Kobe Paras Break Away Slam Dunk!

Kobe Paras isn’t exactly playing heavy minutes in the Jones Cup. To be exact, he only played a little less than 7 minutes against Iraq. It is obvious that the coaching staff is not forcing the issue on Kobe Paras as the young baller still got a lot of time to prove himself.
The fans, however, could not wait and have been demanding to see Paras on the court and every time it happens, all eyes are on him. Tonight he did not disappoint as his only points of the game came in a form of a slam dunk.
Even Kobe Paras was happy to finally get a score in the game.
Let’s watch Kobe Paras’ Slam dunk at the Jones Cup.

The Worst 3 Point Shooting Ever Caused Gilas Pilipinas to Bow Down to Korea

July 19, 2017. Gilas Pilipinas shoots (1/26) 4% from beyond the arc. Probably the worst three point shooting percentage in recent memory for the Gilas Pilipinas team.
No way a team would win against a tough Korean squad with this type of shooting. That is exactly what happened as South Korea gave the Philippines its second defeat in 5 games.  Led by Sekeun Oh who scored 14 points, the Korean cruised to victory and captured their 4th win in five games. They are now in 3rd place behind Canada and Lithuania who got the same record at 4-1 but leads in the ranking due to scoring ratio.
Mike Myers led the Philippines with 18 points and 17 rebounds, Jio Jalalon scored 18 points, while hustle man Christian Standhardiner contributed 16 points.  However, the rest of the team was cold especially from beyond the arc. Matthew Wright who was consistent in the first four games went cold scoring only 4 points and not making any three pointers on 7 attempts. It wasn’t just him who could not find the bottom of the net. Parks(0/3), Cruz( 0/2), Ravena (0/4), Pogoy( 0/5), Ferrer( 0/3) was all scoreless from beyond the arc.  Jalalon was the only one who hit a 3 pointer (1/2).
Gilas Pilipinas is scheduled to play Iraq in their next game.
