TRIKINI: Making a Difference by Staying Fit

MANILA, Philippines – Megaworld Lifestyle Malls in partnership with GEO Events Management held the urban fitness party Trikini in the McKinely West Park last August 19, 2017.
Trikini featured three basic elements – a 5K run, 15KM bike, and night party to all attendees in a safe and exclusive location right in the heart of the city. Trikini set 2 major areas for the event: an Active Zone and a Fest Zone. All race-friendly runners and cyclists set their weekend fitness fix at the Active Zone. Guests who preferred a more relaxed experience at The Fest Zone joined poi and hoop workshops amid picnic grounds and watched high profile entertainment acts such as SinoSiKat, Extrapolation, and Sanya Smith.
Trikini is the first event of its nature that raised donations for SOS Children’s Villages Philippines. For forty years, the organization has provided health care, housing, and education to underprivileged children and families in the country. Cash Prizes were automatically donated to SOS Children’s Village Philippines, with winners receiving prizes and tokens from participating brands such as ON Shoes and Colnago.

Performance Review: Mizuno Wave Enigma 6

During the test run for the Wave Enigma 6 last April 19 at the Mizuno store in SM Mall of Asia (READ article HERE), I had different impressions towards the shoe. It was understandable since it was entirely brand new and would require a break-in. I decided to hold my assessment and give the shoe further tests. 
At this point, my accumulated mileage input in the Wave Enigma 6 has already reached 47 kilometers. I believe that the shoe has already gone past its break-in period and adjusted well already to my foot.
PERFORMANCE REVIEW: 
At first, I struggled during the first few miles due to the concerns I had with the shoe. The first concern I had was the stack height. The pair I often use only has a 22m on the heel and 18mm on the forefoot.  On the other hand, the Wave Enigma 6’s measures 32 mm on the heel and 20mm on the forefoot.

That’s high. The higher the heel-to-toe drop, the more likely I’d land on my heel (which bugged me since I’m a natural midfoot striker).  The last thing I’d want is pain caused by unintended heel striking. Good news since nothing as such occurred and my appreciation for this shoe grew overtime.
The other concern I had was the underfoot. It felt a little stiff. It was soft but not as plushy as I’d hoped it to be considering the weight penalty it already had due to the midsole foams installed in it. On a positive note, it’s the right kind of stiffness I want in a shoe. Perhaps  the Parallel Wave plate inserted within caused this. I gave consideration to the Wave Enigma 6 since it is a neutral-support shoe. It’s meant to have a more structured functionality.
Heading to the cushioning and ride topic, a runner must remember that the degree of cushioning can affect the shoes’ overall ride. Most shoes nowadays are beefed-up with unique cushioning technologies that brag an all-new level of “comfort”. As a consequence, the ride of the shoe feels dull or sluggish. I once bought a shoe that was generally known for its marshmallow-like cushion. Unfortunately, I ended up disliking it since it eats up additional energy or effort in every stride. It made me feel slow and tired than usual afterwards.   
I believe this is where Mizuno’s Wave Enigma 6 comes in. It’s one of the few pairs in the world that found the sweet spot between support and responsiveness. It might not be too squishy but it maintained my ground feel without compromising too much comfort. For me, that is relatively important than running in a very cushioned shoe. 
The Wave Enigma 6 compensated a lot when it comes to responsiveness. In long runs, I liked how the shoe remained stable due to the heel-to-toe transition guided by the Wave plate inside the midsole. It was fun and impressive. The transition of each stride was fast since the forefoot helped my feet launch quickly.  Despite being a support shoe, it felt a bit snappy.
 However, my guts tells me that the Wave plate itself, despite its effectiveness to distribute the impact received by the foot, causes the rigid feeling I had underfoot. It didn’t significantly affect anything in my performance actually. I’m just a weenie when it comes to the midsole area.

After additional miles logged into the shoe, the ride became more forgiving and comfortable. The stiffness of the shoe will eventually wear off. Just give it more time.
The upper construction of the shoe allowed my feet to stretch freely and naturally inside while running on uneven roads. When it comes to grip or traction, the outsole of the Wave Enigma 6 is definitely a winner. There was a time when I decided to train outdoors after raining. To fully test the grip, I decided to run on the wet sidewalks since it was more slippery than asphalt roads. The traction of the outsole performed well despite the condition I set.   
VERDICT:
The Wave Enigma 6 is perfect for long distance runs and training sessions. It can take a serious beating in high mileage runs. The shoe was highly responsive and performed better than the other cushioned shoes I tested before. For neutral runners who tend to land on their heels, the Wave Enigma 6 can adequately provide the support you need. However, it needs a longer break in period to reduce the stiffness of the shoes.
I hope Mizuno will look into the possibility of reducing the weight of this trainer by making adjustments in its components and figuring out how to enhance the underfoot comfort. Aside from those, the shoe did a very fine job. Fine enough for me to consider it as my marathon trainer.

RUNRIO Trilogy Race Series 2017: Bigger and Better


Running coach Rio dela Cruz of RUNRIO Events Inc. announces the start of this year’s most premiere running series in the country – the RUNRIO Trilogy 2017 at the Okada Manila in Paranaque City. 
Bigger and better, the Runrio Trilogy Race Series 2017 is made possible by Adidas, Gatorade, & Okada Manila. This year’s trilogy solidified its desire to help the community by choosing   YesPinoy Foundation as its event beneficiary this year.  

“We are excited to launch the Runrio Trilogy race series because there are many running enthusiasts out there who are looking forward to this event. This year marks the 7th year of the RUNRIO Trilogy, whose main objective is to educate runners to train and race progressively,” said award winning actor and YesPinoy ambassador Dingdong Dantes. ‘Aside from this, part of the proceeds of this year’s race series will go to the YesPinoy Foundation to support the organization’s philanthropic works” he added. 

RUNRIO will also be launching its new campaign “Heart to Finish”, which is expected to become the participant’s mantra for all RUNRIO races.

The third and final leg will cap the series on October 1 with a full marathon distance of 42 Km that also includes 21 Km, 10Km, and 5Km distances. Runners who can complete the highest distance of all 3 races will be honored at the RUNRIO Trilogy Awards Night.

Mizuno Wave Enigma 6: First Impressions


Mizuno Philippines had a test run for its latest release, the Mizuno Wave Enigma 6, at the SM Mall of Asia last April 19, 2017. 
The Wave Enigma 6 is specifically designed for runners with neutral pronation. Unlike its brother, the recently released Wave Rider 20, the Wave Enigma 6 boasts added cushion and support. Being a neutral runner myself, I was anticipating on how the shoe will deliver.

Here are my initial impressions with the new Mizuno Wave Enigma 6:
1.)  WEIGHT
The shoe weighs 11.2 ounces. In my book, that means that the shoe is leaning on the “heavy” category.  When I first tried the shoes, I immediately noticed the tad difference between its weight and the pair I was wearing earlier. It was understandable since the Wave Enigma 6 is beefed up with 2 different cushioning systems and the outsole has a full X10 blown rubber coverage. One shouldn’t expect that trainers like this would be as light as other performance shoes.

Here’s the good news: During the actual test run, the weight of the Wave Enigma 6 was barely noticeable. I felt it but it didn’t have any significant effect on my strides nor pace. I have yet to see how the shoes will fare in long slow distance runs and sprints.
2.)  FIT and UPPER
It was a perfect lockdown. 
My heel sat pretty well within the heel cup of the shoe.  The toebox of the Wave Enigma 6 gave my toes a spacious room to wiggle around. I didn’t have any issues with the midfoot since the mesh wrapped around my feet just fine. It wasn’t too snug (which I often dread in some brands). The plush feel of the tongue and ankle collar was superb as well.

The upper construction of the shoe, which is composed of a breathable stretch mesh, is the result of Mizuno’s Dynamotion Fit technology. Mizuno aims to build a pair that will adapt to the natural motion of the feet. The Wave Enigma 6, in response to this, actually allowed my feet to move naturally while running. When it comes to fit and upper construction, this pair will not disappoint.

3.) SOLE
This is the part in which I had mixed reactions. Right after I wore the shoes, there’s one striking observation that came right in my head. It was VERY FIRM. I had other pairs that were softer. This one seems to beg differently.

The Wave Enigma 6 didn’t feel soft as I expected it would be. In some cases, that’s also a good thing. Other brands invest on comfort by adding some kind of additional “cush” on their products’ midsoles. The result? You have a shoe that eats up additional energy in every stride and erases ground feel. Having a shoe with excessive cushioning can be disadvantageous.   
Also, there’s a lot of going-on in its midsole. It gave me the impression that the shoe focuses on providing that balance between premium cushioning and responsiveness. 
I was right.
According to Mickey Regala, the Marketing Communications Supervisor of Mizuno Philippines, he explained that the shoe features 3 materials in its midsole: The Parallel Wave plate, U4ic and U4icX midsole foams.
The Parallel Wave plate is the plastic-like material in between the midsole foams. This patented technology of Mizuno aims to equally disperse the shock received by the foot during the impact phase. My guess is that this plate plays a huge role in the Wave Enigma 6’s overall firmness, responsiveness, and ride.

The wave plate was then compressed with different midsole foams. The U4ic (white) is placed on top while the U4icX (orange), the softest midsole foam of Mizuno, is located at the bottom. I was curious on how these 3 different materials will work out together in the test run.

Here’s the answer: The Wave Enigma 6 was equally responsive in all trials I did during the test run: drills, easy pace, race pace, and sprints. The overall ride was great and the cushioning was adequate. Despite the weight penalty, the shoe performed well.  Just a slight improvement on the sole comfort will be great. 
4. PRICE
The Wave Enigma 6 comes with a hefty price of Php 7, 495. It’s quite expensive. With different brands offering cheaper alternatives in the market, choosing this shoe will be a dilemma.

Yakult 10-Miler 2017: Going Strong at 28 Years

MANILA – Yakult, in partnership with Mizuno and 100 PLUS, kicked-off its annual “Yakult 10-Miler” at the Liwasang Ullalim at the CCP Complex last March 5, 2017. For the first time in its 28-year history, the Yakult 10-Miler added a Half-Marathon Category in its event. 
Proactive, the well-known race organizer of Color Manila Runs, was the event organizer of the pioneer 10-Miler this year. The fusion of both premier bodies proved to be an effective tandem due to the dramatic developments added in this year’s run; the addition of finisher medals and post-race freebies in all registered kits. 

Aside from the delay in the official gun time for the 21 KM Category, the Yakult 10-Miler event transitioned smoothly. The route map for this year’s staging bested the previous ones. The roads were clear and checkpoints were monitored by race marshals. As expected, the hydration stations were sufficient and allocated effectively along the route while the post-race freebies were distributed without any hassle.

COLOR MANILA RUN Year 5: A Kaleidoscope Comes to Life


The Color Manila Run jump-started the 1st quarter of 2017 with a vibrant event last January 8, at the SM Mall of Asia Grounds. Now on its 5th year, thousands of registered runners were pelted with colored powder throughout the race route. The result? A color-stained shirt, tons of artsy photos, unlimited smiles, and epic memories that will last a lifetime.
Known as the most anticipated non-competitive run in the Philippines, the Color Manila Run maintains its goal to advocate a healthy and active lifestyle by adding fun to the running sport that Filipinos will surely enjoy. “I really felt the enjoyment of everybody in the event. In spite of the exhaustion, you can see the joy in their faces. It was a clear sign that Color Manila Run was successful in showing us that running can be a fun thing to do,” Dannika Rodriguez, a consultant at Misys Philippines, recounts her experience.

Runners from various categories – 3K, 5K, 10K, and 21K, – ran through the race courses where different color stations and well-propped crews await them. “It was the perfect event to start my year.” says Milo Dagami, a technical support agent at Telstra Company who just finished a 10KM distance, “The crowd (race crew) at the color stations was very nice and friendly to me. It was awesome!”  Unlike other events in which most runners go home after running, most runners stay in the race village after completing in their respective categories. The programs prepared by organizers every year are exciting and fun as the race route itself.

The highlight of the post-run programs was the Color Festival; a post-run party in which participating runners simultaneously released the colored powders in the air and danced to the beat. “I had so much fun with other runners, especially during the Color festival at the race village,” shares Brian Tan, a software quality engineer. “I guess the best part about the race was being a part of it. Unlike usual competitive races, I didn’t have to worry about my personal record. I had a good time during and after running. It was a wonderful experience all throughout.”

Aside from the creative theme of the event, the Color Manila Run boasts a lot of freebies that gave participants a bang for their bucks. These included race singlets, dri-fit shirts, unique finisher medals and shirts, sunglasses, multi-way headwear, drawstring bags, pillows, hydrations, and even color packets to be used for the color festival! “The finisher items were a big bonus. I certainly love this years’ big and pretty medal.” Brian added.

MANILA- Aliw Broadcasting Corporation celebrated its 25th anniversary through a fun-run event entitled Takbo ng Todong Lakas! on October 23 at the CCP Complex, Pasay City.

5 Points That Made the Color Manila Run: Black Light Edition a SUCCESS


Did you run at the Color Manila Run Black Light Edition – Manila 2016? If not, you have may have missed out a great run party. Here’s my honest take regarding the most talked-about color run this month.
1.) It was a 100% FUN-run!
            There are only 3 reasons why I join a race: 1.) I want to break my official PR whenever I can, 2.) train for longer distances, and 3.) I want to earn that cool finisher shirt. With those being said, I’ll fall straight under the “serious runners” category.  Joining and running at Color Manila’s ‘Black Light’ 2016 edition was amazingly unnatural for me. My only GOAL in this race was to slow down and enjoy.There was no air of “competitiveness” around. Yes, there was a lot of walking that happened in this run. One must understand that the exact point of the event was simple: You’re not supposed to take it seriously. Everyone was there to have fun, play around on the streets, and exhaust the entire distance making memories with their friends and families. 

For a “serious runner” like me, it was like having a long recess with thousands of kids after a very complicated subject in school. It’s break time!

PS: A special shout-out to those brave men who brought Star Wars Lightsabers. That was a pretty awesome idea.

2.) It promotes a CLEAN party experience.

            Because of the recent issues that circulated in the news recently, the organizers of Color Manila Run took the mantle of responsibility and encouraged all runners to have a CLEAN party. The definition of “CLEAN” meant no alcohol and no drugs. You want to get drunk? Get and fill yourself with Vita Coco. The gesture done by the organizers during the jumpstart of the event was an impressive show of credibility to their clients. The Color Manila Run remained faithful in promoting a healthy lifestyle and an enjoyable running experience for everybody.  Great job on this one, CMR!

3.) It was well-ORGANIZED.

            Most of the runners had a pleasant experience (There is no such thing as a perfect event). The implementation of registration mechanics, set-up of the race village, transition of each running category, hydration, road facilitation, quality of race inclusions, and distribution of kits and freebies were all good. I always had this tendency to criticize every run I join in, and I have nothing to say about this run. Yes, the registration fee was quite expensive but it was fair, considering how everything turned out. Organizing a smooth event like this with a registered number of 9,000 runners is a commendable feat.

4.) It’s goes NATIONWIDE.

            Different editions of the Color Manila Run are held in several parts of the country every year. During the press conference at the Prive’, I had the chance to see the races that the CMR had organized throughout the years. It was amazing to imagine the number of people who actually participate in this kind of race. It didn’t matter whether you are from Manila or Davao, Luzon or Mindanao. 

The Color Manila Run surely brought the fun in Filinvest, Alabang that night. 

5.) It is a Run-For-A-Cause event.

            The CMR supports humanitarian advocacies. The Color Manila Foundation Inc is an organization that aims to help educate and support our fellow Filipinos. The event promotes a Shoebox drive that will benefit the people of the Mangyan and Dumagat tribes. It’s good to know that I was going run in an event that has a motive to help others and not just make profits.  It’s one of those events that has a HEART.
