Jomary Torres’ Breakout to Martial Arts Prominence is Defined by Perseverance

Jomary Torres One Championship
It will take some time for undefeated Filipino breakout star Jomary “The Zamboanganian Fighter” Torres to get used to the spotlight after getting her hand raised on two-straight occasions on the global stage of ONE Championship.
While Torres never asked for it, she has become a celebrated figure following back-to-back wins inside the ONE Championship cage in 2017.
Torres shocked the world in August 2017 when the little-known atomweight from the Philippines made her promotional debut against Thai martial arts heroine Rika “Tinydoll” Ishige at ONE: KINGS & CONQUERORS in Macao, China.
While the Thai standout has emerged as one of the most popular talents in Asia’s martial arts scene, Torres stole her thunder on that fateful night when she submitted Ishige in the second round of their exhilarating contest.
Torres stepped on Macanese soil with little fanfare, but by the time the Filipina warrior left the glamorous Cotai Arena, everyone knew who she was.
Three months after she forced Ishige to wave the white flag in her maiden ONE Championship appearance, Tores out-grappled Indonesia’s Nita Dea en route to a unanimous decision victory at ONE: HERO’S DREAM in Yangon, Myanmar.
Despite the fiery performances in her first two outings under the ONE Championship banner, the 21-year old Filipina is actually a shy, soft-spoken girl with sincere eyes.
However, unknown to many, her mild-mannered demeanor hides the adversity she dealt within her childhood.

Behind the sincere eyes

Torres and her older brother were actually left under the care of their grandmother since they were infants.
Deprived of both parents, Torres still grew up to be a well-mannered lady as her grandmother filled the void left by their absence.
Despite not having a stable business as a source of income, her grandmother found ways to provide, such as picking up extra work at a school cafeteria.
“My dad is in Zamboanga City, while my mom is in Basilan,” she detailed. “They each have their own families. Before, there was still anger in my heart because I did not know why they left, and why they broke up, but eventually, that anger disappeared.”
As a result of her circumstances, Torres was regularly picked on by some of her classmates at school, which left her with no other choice but to fight back.
“I was a really quiet girl, and I guess that enticed them to bully me even more,” she revealed. “I told them they should not mess with me because if I fought back, they would be sorry. I punched one and even earned a trip to the principal’s office.”
Although she suffered bullying, the abandonment from her parents, and the lack of any real role models, Torres had a simple dream of becoming a basketball player when she was a young girl.
“I really wanted to play basketball,” she quipped. “Most men play basketball in our country. Since it is like our national sport, I was fascinated by it.”
Having played in fiestas and for her school, Torres thought that she could eventually find a way to make a career out of her hobby, but circumstances would not allow her to pursue that road.
“Instead of letting my grandmother work even more just to get me through college, I decided to stop going to school and find a job to help her out,” she said.

Finding a second chance in the city

Out of desperation, Torres did not hesitate to take a job in Taguig, Metro Manila, where she worked as a nanny.
During her time as a nanny, Torres met Ruel Catalan, who frequently trained at a gym near the school where the child that she took care of was studying.
While waiting for the child to finish school, Torres swung by the gym to watch the action firsthand.
For three years, the usually-active Torres was contained in a job where she could not feed her competitive spirit and could only envy them from the sidelines.
Watching people get fit, all while satisfying that craving for competition through martial arts enticed her.
In 2015, Ruel introduced Torres to his older brother, Rene Catalan, multiple-time Wushu world champion and head coach of Catalan Fighting System.
“Coach Rene invited me and gave me an offer to consider. I tried training, and I have been there ever since,” she recalled. “I was a bit fat before. I only got fit here.”
After receiving an offer to join the team, Torres did not think twice to leave her job as a nanny and trained to become a full-time martial artist.
With no martial arts background, it came as a shock for her when she was immediately booked for a match.
As homage to her hometown, Torres took the nickname of “The Zamboanginian Fighter” as her alias when she had her professional debut in August 2016 at a local show.
Torres pulled off the unanimous decision victory, and from then on, the Catalans knew that they had a potential star on their hands.
“I trained for two months, and was surprised when I was told by my coach that I would be competing,” Torres stated. “I took on the challenge so that I could experience a real match, and thankfully, I won.”

Dancing under the bright lights

In merely three years, Torres has emerged as a promising talent and has compiled an undefeated professional record of 3-0.
Torres credits all of her success to her mentor Rene Catalan, who equipped her with the necessary tools to flourish inside the cage.
“Although he may be a bit strict sometimes, I know that it is for my own good,” she expressed. “He is the one who introduced me to this world of martial arts, and I really admire how he manages to do what he does.”
On Friday, 26 January, Torres will once again be strutting her wares under the bright lights as she takes on fellow Filipina April Osenio in a three-round atomweight clash on the undercard of ONE: GLOBAL SUPERHEROES in Manila, Philippines.
If there is anyone who knows about the pressure of following up back-to-back victories, it would be Osenio as the Team Lakay athlete rebounded from a 2015 loss with back-to-back wins against the likes of Natalie Gonzales Hills and Malaysian star Ann Osman in 2016.
However, Osenio could not capitalize on her momentum as she stumbled with a string of defeats to former atomweight world title contender Jenny Huang and most recently to current ONE Women’s Strawweight World Champion “The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan.
Even with the recent setbacks, Osenio is a two-time Philippines’ national Wushu champion, who has competed against world-class talents at the top of both the women’s atomweight and strawweight divisions.
Torres acknowledges the capabilities of her compatriot, sharing that she is training diligently in every aspect of the game.
“I am still not certain how I will go about with the match. She will have to wait and be surprised with what I am going to do in the cage,” she teased.
Torres is singularly focused on the task at hand, but she is not short on motivation as “The Zamboanganian Fighter” is driven by making life better for her loved ones and the people who have continuously supported her along the way.
“I want to give back to my gym, and the people who love and support me. I am competing for my country. Everything I do is for all of them, and as long as I can do this, I will keep doing this,” she ended.

Kairat Akhmetov, ONE World Title Challenger, stated: “I am coming into this interim title match-up with the mentality that it will be me versus the world, and I am ready for it. In 2017, I had ups and downs. I do not want to look back. In 2018, I am looking forward to reaching my dream to battle Adriano Moraes for the third time. But of course, I have to beat Geje Eustaquio first to fulfill my dream.”
Joshua Pacio, ONE Athlete, stated: “I have more experience, and I believe the two losses that I have suffered in my career have taught me a lot. I see those setbacks as an advantage, rather than just a blemish on my record. This match means a lot to me. I want to prove that I deserve to be competing on this international stage. I want to show to my countrymen that we also excel in martial arts, and to inspire more youths to pursue their respective dreams.”
Lan Ming Qiang, ONE Athlete, stated: “I am proud to be part of a great martial arts organization like ONE Championship, but my pride is without exaggeration. My pride cannot be moved. It only grows. I want more people to see Chinese athletes at the highest stage. I am looking forward to the match. I do not know what is going to happen, or how the match is going to end, but it is surely going to be exciting.”
Eric Kelly, ONE Athlete, stated: “Rafael Nunes has been away for a while, so I am not sure if he got stronger or improved. All I know is that I am training to achieve a win. My opponent is a human like me, and everyone is beatable. I always put that in my mind. Right now, I have to redeem myself in front of my countrymen. I might be 35 years old, but I am not giving up. I am here to stay.”
Rafael Nunes, ONE Athlete, stated: “I feel so honored to face a Filipino martial arts veteran like Eric Kelly in my return to ONE Championship. I see me keeping the match standing, and I will be using my distance to box with him and use some kicks. If he wants to go to the ground, I will be trying to finish him.”
Top flyweight contender and former world title challenger Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio of  Baguio City, Philippines, is one of the most skilled martial artists in Asia, and a highly-decorated wushu practitioner. His solid striking and grappling skill set has led to huge victories over the course of a seven-year professional career. Training in the high altitudes of the Philippines’ Summer capital, Eustaquio hones his craft alongside world-class teammates at the fabled Team Lakay. Known for his incredible ability to keep calm in the face of adversity, Eustaquio is set to headline ONE: GLOBAL SUPERHEROES opposite Kairat Akhmetov for the ONE Interim Flyweight World Championship.
Former ONE Flyweight World Champion Kairat Akhmetov is a veteran martial artist from Almaty, Kazakhstan. The 30-year-old boasts a solid 24-1 professional record amassed during a stellar martial arts career which has seen him dominate his opponents with tenacious wrestling and powerful striking. In his most recent appearance inside the ONE Championship cage, Akhmetov defeated Geje Eustaquio via closely-contested three-round split decision. Now he faces Eustaquio in a rematch, this time for the ONE Interim Flyweight World Championship.
22-year-old Joshua Pacio of Baguio City is one of the fastest rising martial arts stars from the Philippines. He is one of the promotion’s most talented strawweights and a proud member of the famed Team Lakay. Pacio is a wushu practitioner with a solid grappling repertoire. All but one of his 10 career victories have come by spectacular finish, which includes five wins by submission and four by devastating knockout. In his most recent bout, Pacio knocked out veteran Roy Doliguez with a second-round spinning back fist. A former ONE Strawweight World Championship Title Challenger, Pacio is looking to bring himself back to title contention with another victory. A tough task is ahead of Pacio, however, as he is slated to lock horns with China’s Lan Ming Qiang.
Lan Ming Qiang is a national sanda champion, who trains alongside ONE Championship flyweight standout “The Southern Eagle” Ma Hao Bin at the Jincan Defense Club. After a 16-2 sanda record and several championship titles, the 24-year-old native of Guangxi, China recently made his transition to the cage and already has a pair of stunning victories to his credit. Lan is set to make his promotional debut under the ONE Championship banner against former world title contender Joshua Pacio.
Featherweight standout Eric “The Natural” Kelly of Baguio City is widely considered one of the best homegrown martial arts athletes to come out of the Philippines. The wushu practitioner combines solid striking techniques with high-level grappling skills, which has resulted in nine impressive submissions and one knockout out of 12 total victories. Kelly’s most impressive showing to date came in a submission win over Rob Lisita in 2014. In his next bout, Kelly will face Rafael Nunes.
20-year-old Rafael Nunes is a martial artist from Sao Paulo, Brazil with a 10-1 record. He is the former Premier FC Lightweight Champion and has steamrolled through the competition in his home country with a knack for winning by exciting finish. All but one of Nunes’ 10 wins have ended within the distance. A Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt, Nunes is equally comfortable finishing his opponents by submission or by strikes. He looks to showcase his multifaceted skill set in his next bout, and will face a tough challenge when he takes on veteran Eric Kelly.

XIONG JING NAN CROWNED INAUGURAL ONE WOMEN’S STRAWWEIGHT WORLD CHAMPION WITH TKO OF TIFFANY TEO

In the main event of the evening, a riveting striking battle took place between two outstanding female martial artists. “The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan etched her name in the pages of history as the first ever ONE Women’s Strawweight World Champion, defeating Singaporean martial arts ace Tiffany Teo by referee stoppage in the fourth round. Relying on her accurate striking, Xiong tagged Teo repeatedly with her patented overhand rights and stinging left hooks that presented a difficult problem to solve for the tough Singaporean. Through sheer power and determination, Xiong overwhelmed her opponent and secured the finish by dropping Teo with a volley of crisp punches, prompting veteran referee Olivier Coste to call a halt to the contest.
Xiong Jing Nan, newly-crowned ONE Women’s Strawweight World Champion, stated: “I want to thank ONE Championship for this chance to show what China, and what women can do. I am happy to represent China and take a lot of pride in that. I feel great and I’m overwhelmed. This is a message to all the women across the world, you can achieve anything. This win is dedicated to my grandmother and grandfather who passed away recently.”

STEFER RAHARDIAN DEFEATS MUHAMMAD IMRAN BY UNANIMOUS DECISION

In the co-main event of the evening, Indonesian flyweight prodigy Stefer Rahardian drew the loudest cheers from the hometown crowd at the packed Jakarta Convention Center as he turned in another stellar performance, dominating Pakistan’s Muhammad Imran over three rounds to keep his unblemished professional record intact. Rahardian fully utilized his grinding ground-and-pound to pummel Imran repeatedly while threatening to end matters with various submission attempts. All three judges scored the bout in favor of Rahardian, who had his arm raised via unanimous decision.

SHINYA AOKI SUBMITS MARAT GAFUROV WITH REAR NAKED CHOKE IN GRAPPLING SUPER-MATCH

In an entertaining display of grappling mastery between two submission wizards, former ONE Lightweight World Champion Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki emerged triumphant against former ONE Featherweight World Champion Marat “Cobra Gafurov in the card’s highly-anticipated Grappling Super-Match. Tearing a page out of his opponent’s playbook, Aoki took Gafurov’s back and submitted the Russian with a tight rear-naked choke to earn a much-needed victory.
Indonesian martial arts standout “The Terminator” Sunoto returned to action, needing only two rounds to pull off a crafty submission finish against Cambodia’s Rin Saroth. Facing an opponent who has extensive experience in the striking discipline of khun khmer, Sunoto turned the bout to his advantage by taking Saroth down to the canvas and wearing him out with stifling ground strikes. On the mat, Sunoto caught his Cambodian counterpart with a deep americana to force the tap, claiming the third submission win of his professional career.
32-year-old Russian bantamweight standout Yusup “Maestro” Saadulaev spoiled the ONE Championship return of Japanese veteran martial artist Masakazu Imanari, stifling his opponent with his high-level grappling game. The Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt kept the action focused primarily on the mat, where he controlled the pace in various dominant positions while constantly threatening with submission attempts. All three judges scored in favor of Saadulaev to win by unanimous decision.
36-year-old Indonesian martial arts proponent Victorio Senduk made a successful return to the ONE Championship cage after a four-year break to defeat countryman Yohan Mulia Legowo via thrilling technical knockout. After overcoming Legowo’s offensive advances early in the bout, Senduk came back with a dramatic display of willpower to turn the tables on Legowo, blasting him with a devastating combination against the fence just moments into the second round.
Filipino martial arts veteran Rene Catalan of Manila, Philippines turned in one of his most dominant performances to date against China’s Peng Xue Wen, winning by technical knockout to score his fourth straight victory inside the ONE Championship cage. Catalan, 18 years Peng’s senior, dominated the striking exchanges and matched Peng, a Greco Roman wrestling champion, in the grappling department. In the second round, Catalan dropped Peng with a liver shot and swarmed him on the ground.
Local female martial artist Priscilla Hertati Lumbangaol made easy work of Malaysia’s Audreylaura Boniface with a spectacular showcase of offense. A wushu and sanda practitioner, Lumbangaol peppered Boniface with strikes for the duration of the bout, ending matters against the cage with a torrent of impactful combinations.

Eric Kelly Eager to Reclaim Lost Glory as Asia’s Best Featherweight

Eric Kelly One Championship
Eric “The Natural” Kelly may have fallen in recent times, but the Filipino martial arts veteran still feels that he has something more to prove as he attempts to sparkplug his professional career under the ONE Championship banner.
Reeling from a three-bout losing skid, Kelly is determined to reinsert his name into winner’s column as he is slated to take on returning Brazilian standout Rafael “Indio” Nunes.
Both men are set to face each other on the undercard of ONE: GLOBAL SUPERHEROES, which takes place at the 20,000-capacity SM Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines on 26 January.
The 35-year-old Baguio City native was once considered as one of the best and brightest featherweight contenders in the Asian region when he started his martial arts run in 2009, but his billing lost its luster due to a string of setbacks.
When Kelly entered enemy territory to face Malaysian-Kiwi dynamo Ev “E.T.” Ting in January 2016, he suffered a third-round submission defeat at the hands of the future ONE Lightweight World Championship title contender.
Kelly tried to bounce back from his loss to Ting by squaring off with former ONE Featherweight World Champion Narantungalag Jadambaa seven months later, but he yielded to the Mongolian hard-hitter by way of knockout in 44 seconds.
A victory inside the ONE Championship cage remained elusive to Kelly as he bowed down to ex-ONE Lightweight World Champion Kotetsu “No Face” Boku in a featherweight encounter via third-round technical knockout in August of last year.
Kelly looked good in the early rounds as he rocked Boku and nearly stopped the bout with a flurry of punches in the opening stanza.
Picking up the momentum from the first frame of action, Kelly then went on to knock Boku down in the second round again.
However, the Japanese warrior showed resilience to recover both times and rally to a thrilling comeback in the final canto.
“I did not have a good preparation for the bout, and I am taking it as a lesson,” Kelly admitted. “I lacked discipline. I have accepted the fact that I am in a bad spot, but I am taking all those experiences as lessons and inspecting them for my future matches.”
Despite the series of losses, his confidence remains unfazed as he brings a indomitable and positive attitude into his upcoming bout against Nunes at ONE: GLOBAL SUPERHEROES.
“It is very much important to me to win in this coming bout against Rafael Nunes. I want to show to those who believe in me that I can make it not just for myself, but for all,” he said. “I want this victory so bad.”
Nunes boasts an impressive professional record of 10-1, with five victories coming by way of submission and another four by knockout.
The last time that Nunes competed was back in June 2014 when he made his promotional debut opposite Japan’s Koji “The Commander” Ando at ONE: WAR OF DRAGONS.
On that night, Ando cleverly submitted the spirited Nunes via rear-naked choke in the opening round.
Nunes has not been able to avenge his lone blemish in his career as illness and injury have derailed his comeback.
More than three years after his last match, Nunes’ hunger for his first win on the global stage might only be rivaled by Kelly’s desire to get back on the winning track.
According to Kelly, it is not easy to study an opponent who lives on the other side of the world and coming off such a long layoff.
“He has been away for a while, so I am not sure if he got stronger or improved,” he stated. “All I know is that I am training to achieve a win.”
Although a tough task is in front of him, Kelly is more fired up than ever to arrest his losing spell and deliver a winning performance at ONE: GLOBAL SUPERHEROES.
“My opponent is a human like me, and everyone is beatable. I always put that in my mind. Right now, I have to redeem myself in front of my countrymen. I might be 35 years old, but I am not giving up. I am here to stay,” he declared.

Rough Road Back to World Title Contention Brings out the Best in Joshua Pacio

Joshua Pacio One Championship
Every time Joshua “The Passion” Pacio steps into the ONE Championship cage, it is in pursuit of a lifelong dream, one that he has had since a young boy growing up in Baguio City in the Philippines.
Having already conquered the Philippine and regional martial arts scenes, winning several titles along the way, only one target remains – the ONE Strawweight World Championship.
The 22-year-old Team Lakay standout may be one of the younger competitors in the organization, but he has already emerged as a seasoned leader in one of the most well-respected gyms in Asia and could be the next martial arts superstar of the Philippines.
Ever since falling short in his bid to capture the ONE Strawweight World Championship title against then-titleholder Yoshitaka “Nobita” Naito in October 2016, Pacio was a man on a mission to catapult himself back into title contention.
However, it was not a smooth path going back to the world title stage for Pacio as he has had a mixed run of results.
After a career-defining split decision win over former world champion Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke in March, Pacio was then submitted by top Japanese prospect Hayato Suzuki in the first round of their recent August clash.
Although he managed to redeem himself by scoring a highlight-reel knockout of former boxing champion and compatriot Roy Doliguez this past November, Pacio still looks for consistency with regards to his performance inside the ONE Championship cage.
“It’s more about consistency. To be consistent inside the cage is what I am for at present. I have to win it all if I want to be back in the title contender’s position. A single loss could bring me back to square one. However, I am willing to work for it,” he said.
Despite the rough road back to vying for the ONE Strawweight World Championship, Pacio is inspired to embrace the grind as he witnessed Team Lakay’s elder statesman Eduard Folayang endured a tumultuous period of uncertainty in his martial arts career before becoming one of the brightest superstars and most beloved titleholders in ONE Championship history.
“Before he (Folayang) got the belt, he went through a lot of ups and downs in his career. He was beaten and was knocked out twice, but I saw the fight still burning in him,” he stated.
“Now, he still goes to the gym and tries to get better and better every day. He taught me a lot about life and its spiritual side, and he taught me positive attitudes that will bring me up in my career,” Pacio added.
According to Pacio, it has been his mantra to turn his heartbreaking losses into lessons that would give him the fresh perspective to persevere and push forward until he achieves his goal.
“My two losses in my career made me realize just how much more I had to improve so that I can become a better martial artist,” he disclosed. “I realized that there are a lot of holes in my game, and that the only way to get better is to recognize my weaknesses.”
His hunger to take things into another level showed in his most recent outing as he knocked out Doliguez in the second round with a spinning backfist last November.
Pacio has the chance to make it two in a row as he is set to duke it out with China’s Lan Ming Qiang on the undercard of ONE: GLOBAL SUPERHEROES, which takes place at the 20,000-capacity SM Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines on 26 January.
Pacio was originally scheduled to square off with Pongsiri “The Smiling Assassin” Mitsatit in the co-main event, but the undefeated Thai was forced to withdraw from the contest just a week out from the bout due to injury.
Lan accepted the offer to step in for Mitsatit and face a former world title contender like Pacio in his promotional debut.
“I was excited about my bout with Pongsiri because it would have been a clash of the young guns. I am not disappointed because it is safety first. If I was the one sick or injured, I would not compete either, so I hope he recovers fast and gets back on track,” he shared.
“Lan Ming Qiang is my new opponent now, and I need to adopt quickly to his style. But our game plan is still the same, and I will execute that on 26 January,” Pacio further explained.
From Guangxi, China, Lan is a national sanda champion who trains alongside flyweight world title contender “The Southern Eagle” Ma Hao Bin at the Jincan Defense Club.
After a 16-2 Wushu Sanda record and several championship titles, the 24-year-old Chinese prodigy recently made his transition to the cage and already has a pair of stunning victories to his credit.
The opponent change has not affected Pacio or his training at Team Lakay, revealing that he will continue his normal preparation alongside head coach Mark Sangiao and his world-class teammates.
“The toughest thing about Lan’s skill set is his striking game, but I think I have competed against some of the best strikers in my division,” he stressed. “I expect that Lan will be explosive and hungry, so I will stick to our game plan and get the win.”
For Pacio, his three-round cage encounter with Lan is an opportunity to build some momentum.
“I see this match as a very exciting one because I know we are both warriors, and I know we will put everything on the line on the 26th,” he ended.

Edward Kelly Elated to Compete Alongside Older Brother Eric at One FC

Edward Kelly of One FC
Eric and Edward Kelly lived under the same roof for years in their hometown of Baguio City when they were young and shared the same burning passion in martial arts.
Growing up in the small town community of San Tomas Central, located within the city limits of Baguio, Eric and Edward did not always get along with one another as the two fought all the time, sometimes even resulting in injury.
“We were not that close before. We always fought. In short, Eric and I were headaches to our parents,” Edward recalled in jest. “But of course, things change when you grow up and mature. We now appreciate each other’s company.”
Fortunately, when the brothers entered high school, Eric discovered martial arts, and everything would change for both of them.
Edward paid attention to the growing accolades of his older brother and was heavily motivated by it.
“I noticed after he started martial arts that it taught him the discipline not to fight me as a brother. Instead, he started giving me advice on what he had learned,” he bared. “I also joined martial arts because it teaches you discipline, and a lot of other positives, too.”
Years later, both men have made remarkable runs as outstanding martial artists in their respective professional careers.
Eric is now widely regarded as one of the best homegrown martial arts athletes to come out of the Philippines.
A Wushu practitioner who combines solid striking techniques with high-level grappling skills, Eric owns nine scintillating submissions and one knockout out of 12 total career victories.
Eric’s most impressive showing to date came in a submission win over Rob Lisita in July 2014, a performance that earned him the US$50,000 ONE Warrior Bonus.
Meanwhile, Edward is considered as one of the best and brightest featherweight prospects to emerge from the well-established martial arts scene in the Philippines.
With a complete striking and grappling skill set, Edward brings Team Lakay’s world-renowned Wushu to center stage as he showcases his impeccable skillset inside the ONE Championship cage.
In addition, the younger Kelly has won three of his last four bouts under the ONE Championship banner, all by spectacular finish.
The Kelly brothers get a rare chance on 26 January as the siblings will compete side-by-side when ONE Championship holds its first of the four scheduled events in the country for 2018.
Asia’s premier martial arts promotion spearheads ONE: GLOBAL SUPERHEROES at the 20,000-capacity SM Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines.
Eric squares off with Brazilian standout Rafael Nunes on the undercard of ONE: GLOBAL SUPERHEROES, while Edward crosses paths with Cambodia’s Meas Meul in a three-round featherweight clash.
It is the first time both of them will be featured at a ONE Championship event together, and Edward plans to make it a night they will never forget.
“I am so excited because finally, it’s going to happen. It marks the first time that I will compete alongside my older brother. Surely, it’s going to be a memorable night for the both of us,” he said.
“We have the same aim of winning. So making it two for two on this card will make this extra special,” Edward added.
As Eric seeks to get back on the winning track at the expense of Nunes, Edward is likewise looking to move forward in his career after getting his three-bout winning streak snapped by American stalwart Emilio Urrutia in August 2017.
In his next cage outing, Edward goes up against Meul, an undefeated promotional newcomer with six wins to his credit, at ONE: GLOBAL SUPERHEROES.
“My coaches have prepared me well for this. I am not going to disappoint my team and my country when I enter that cage on 26th of January,” Edward assured. “I don’t want to let my countrymen down this time. I am here to give them a great bout. And of course, win the bout in impressive fashion for them.”
Edward has no qualms if he has to go full three rounds with Meul, but he admitted that his sights are always set on securing the finish.
“I am looking to dominate him for three rounds. But hopefully, I can get the finish. A finish will be the perfect way to tell the world that I am back,” he ended.

Like the fighters, fans and bettors are anticipating this event as feature a number of good matchups.

Geje Eustaquio Sacrifices Christmas Family Time in Pursuit of Decisive Victory

Geje Eustaquio
Sacrifice means to give up something cherished in order to get something even more valuable in the future.
This concept also applies to the constantly-evolving world of martial arts as the path to becoming a celebrated world champion is paved with much sacrifice.
To set foot on the pinnacle of success, all competitors must go through blood, sweat and tears in training.
Furthermore, martial artists have to be separated from their families for months to dedicate their lives to the craft that they seek to perfect.
Filipino striking ace Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio had to undergo the same process as he had to give up numerous special occasions with his family and friends to fully focus on his training.
“The life of a professional martial artist is difficult, but I understand that in order to be the best, we have to make certain sacrifices. Spending time away from friends and family to train isn’t easy,” he said.
Eustaquio is slated to face former titleholder Kairat “The Kazakh” Akhmetov for the interim ONE Flyweight World Championship in the co-main event of ONE: GLOBAL SUPERHEROES, which takes place at the 20,000-seater SM Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines on 26 January.
For his highly-anticipated second encounter against Akhmetov at ONE: GLOBAL SUPERHEROES, Eustaquio did not have the chance to fully savor Christmas and the rest of the Yuletide season.
According to Eustaquio, the most painful sacrifice is not being able to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year with his beloved family, but he knows that there is a reward waiting for him.
“It’s part of being a professional martial artist. A lot of sacrifices have been made. Training in December was one of them. I had to give up Christmas celebrations for this fight. I missed a lot of family activities such as birthdays and reunions,” he stated.
“If I want to consider myself as a championship-quality athlete in this sport, I have to make that sacrifice. In the end, I will reap the fruits of my labor. Hard work cannot be denied forever,” Eustaquio added.
On 26 January, the 28-year-old Baguio City native aims to turn his sacrifices into gold as he is looking to exact some revenge and claim a world title in front of his treasured countrymen.
The headlining flyweight clash between Eustaquio and Akhmetov at ONE: GLOBAL SUPERHEROES serves as a rematch of their grueling collision four months earlier, where the Kazakh dynamo defeated the Filipino standout by way of razor-thin split decision.
“It was a learning experience for me, the first time I met Kairat,” Eustaquio recalled. “I knew going into the match that it would be one of the biggest challenges of my career, given that he is a former world champion. Honestly, I was a little flustered. I thought I could have pushed the pace more, and maybe forced him to defend my strikes.”
Eustaquio admitted that there were lapses on his part when he first fought Akhmetov in September of last year.
“I lost focus of the game plan and allowed myself to operate at Akhmetov’s pace instead of dictating the action on the feet. I also could have had better takedown defense. I would have loved to have won, but it is what it is,” he explained.
With five rounds to duel and an interim ONE Flyweight World Championship title on the line, Eustaquio vows to bring more intensity to the cage when he crosses paths with Akhmetov at ONE: GLOBAL SUPERHEROES.
“Kairat is a tricky opponent. After three rounds with him, I have gotten to know him a little bit better. I am able to understand what makes him a great martial artist,” he mentioned.
Eustaquio is known for his fluid Wushu striking game with the distinct ability to remain calm under duress.
Moreover, Eustaquio has faced some of the most talented martial artists in the world, with notable triumphs over Kentaro Watanabe, Gianni Subba, Anatpong Bunrad and reigning ONE Strawweight World Champion Alex Silva.
The 5-foot-5 Team Lakay veteran even previously challenged current ONE Flyweight World Champion Adriano “Mikinho” Moraes for the inaugural title in September 2014, losing via guillotine choke in the second round.
Eustaquio receives the second world title opportunity of his professional career, and a victory over his Kazakhstani rival would line up a future showdown with Moraes for the undisputed title of best flyweight in the world.
As he shares the ONE Championship cage with Akhmetov once more, Eustaquio bared that he working on correct the mistakes he committed in their initial meeting in order to pick up the victory.
Eustaquio believes that a superb takedown defense should prove handy against a wrestler of Akhmetov’s caliber.
“One of the aspects of my game I am working very hard on is my takedown defense,” he revealed. “Every day, we drill very hard in training. We all work to improve our ground game and takedown defense, so we can better showcase our Wushu. After every bout, I aim to get better, win or lose. Every bout is a learning experience.”
Despite falling on the wrong side of a split decision to Akhmetov in September 2017, Eustaquio remains optimistic that he will walk out of the SM Mall of Asia Arena with his hand raised and the interim ONE Flyweight World Championship belt around his waist.
“He he has a big heart. Kazakhstani martial artists have big hearts, and lots of pride. They do not go down easily, and are very tough. I am expecting another difficult bout. That is why I am preparing very well. A victory over Kairat would land me a rematch against Adriano. I believe I have what it takes to become the undisputed ONE Flyweight World Champion,” he ended.

Rene Catalan eyes first 2018 win for the Philippines in ONE Championship

With 2018 bringing in a whole new set of good opportunities for local talents in the Philippines, homegrown Filipino combatant Rene “The Challenger” Catalan is looking to kick off the Philippine mixed martial arts scene’s promising new year with a sweet win as he dons the country’s colors on the undercard of ONE: KINGS OF COURAGE.
Catalan squares off with China’s Peng Xue Wen in a three-round strawweight affair at ONE: KINGS OF COURAGE, which takes place at the Jakarta Convention Center in Indonesia on 20 January.
A highly-decorated Wushu practitioner, Catalan seeks to continue his winning ways inside the ONE Championship cage after picking up two noteworthy victories in 2017.
Catalan started his 2017 on a high note by submitting Indonesian prospect Adrian Matheis via a second-round armbar in January before routing China’s Bu Huo You Ga by way of unanimous decision seven months later.
As the lone Filipino representative at ONE Championship’s first live event of 2018, Catalan seeks to tally the country’s first win in Asia’s premier martial arts organization this year.
“I am exerting a tremendous amount of effort in training. I want to keep on winning,” he said. “I am inspired to win my match this coming January 20 because I am representing the Philippines. It is always an honor to fight for my country. My goal in this bout is to win and bring pride to my nation.”
For Catalan, his first trip to the ONE Championship cage this 2018 is another step in his evolution as a martial artist, hoping to keep up his winning streak and inch him closer to a potential shot at the ONE Strawweight World Championship.
“My goal is to compete for the ONE Strawweight World Championship. I know before I get to that stage, I still have a lot of work ahead of me,” he stated.
Catalan had a rough beginning to his tenure in ONE Championship, but over the past year and a half, he has completely turned his career around.
Despite a tough promotional debut under the ONE Championship banner, which saw him lose to now-reigning ONE Strawweight World Champion Alex “Little Rock” Silva, Catalan has rallied back.
Catalan has strung together three consecutive victories since September 2016 and will look to break into the upper echelon of the division when he meets Peng at ONE: KINGS OF COURAGE.
“I have a certain game plan, but I am prepared to defend against his wrestling,” he shared.
Peng is a 2014 Chinese National Youth Grecco Champion who made his promotional debut at ONE: LEGENDS OF THE WORLD in Manila, Philippines last November.
The Chinese standout leaned on his impeccable grappling to overwhelm Cambodia’s Phat Soda before knocking him out with an awe-inspiring suplex halfway through the opening stanza.
Catalan is well aware of his opponent’s grappling expertise and is diligently training to refute his bread-and-butter as well as his explosive skill set.
“I am preparing a solid defense against him, but of course I am mixing in some offense as well. I am not sure if he will expect that I will add a twist to my game, but 80 percent of my preparation is in strength and conditioning,” he explained.
“For this match, I think the strategy will flow once I am in the cage. I will just do my best to get the win, but also provide an exciting bout for the audience to enjoy,” Catalan added.
Catalan expects that if he secures a decisive win over Peng at ONE: KINGS OF COURAGE, it will grant him a rematch with Silva for the ONE Strawweight World Championship belt.
“Every fighter dreams to become a world champion. I really hope that ONE Championship will give me an opportunity to vie for the title in the future. This bout might be the door to a world title contest. Let us all hope for the best,” he ended.

Former Choir Member Tiffany Teo Determined to Fulfill Destiny as Martial Arts Champ

If a teenaged Tiffany “No Chill” Teo could see her adult counterpart, she would be unrecognizable.
As a young girl, the Singaporean martial arts standout was heavily involved in choir activities, which she participated in for a decade.
“I was a nerd when I was a kid. I was not very active,” Teo shared in jest.
Today, Teo is the polar opposite as she traded in her songbooks and rehearsal rooms for a pair of four-ounce gloves and the gym.
Teo went from a quiet, unassuming choirgirl to becoming a renowned strawweight martial arts prospect with an impressive record of 7-0.
The winding road to ONE Championship began in the oddest of places — in front of the television screen. Teo’s interest in martial arts, Muay Thai specifically, was stoked by popular reality show The Contender Asia.
Motivated by the aforementioned television program and a brief stint in Taekwondo, Teo made her way to a Singapore gym to start training in the “art of eight limbs” nearly eight years ago.
What started out as a way to stay in shape quickly turned into requests for Teo to test out her skills against real competition.
“I had no plans to compete,” she revealed. “My coaches kept asking. They wanted me to go to Thailand. I thought it was a crazy idea. ‘You want me to go face a girl that has been doing it all her life?’”
Teo turned down the opportunity test herself in Thailand, and, after training for two years, she put Muay Thai on the shelf completely as she packed her bags and headed to the United States to study Psychology at the University of Buffalo, where she graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree.
However, school was far from enough to keep Teo from wondering “what if” in terms of martial arts competition. As each day passed, the fire in her to compete grew stronger.
With a full life prior to heading to the United States, there was simply no time for her to train, but after concluding her studies, the window opened again.
Teo returned to Singapore and dove head-first into the amateur martial arts scene after just a month of training.
What was meant to be a one-time experience that she could cross off her bucket list soon turned into something more serious, all because she lost.
“I hate losing,” Teo bared. “I decided to re-evaluate what I did wrong, and I wanted to continue.”
A far cry from her days in the choir, Teo’s journey to perfect her craft in martial arts progressed quickly.
After immersing herself in Muay Thai and boxing, Teo dabbled in the famous grappling discipline of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Before she knew it, the Singaporean was on the road to a full-fledged professional mixed martial arts career.
“I fell in love with martial arts. There is more to it than throwing strikes and grappling with your training partner on the mat. It empowers me every single day,” Teo stressed.
From the amateur to the professional ranks, there was one battle that Teo fought for every single match that she was booked for: winning the approval of her parents.
“They did not like the fact that I am competing,” she said. “Since day one, they asked me why I wanted to do it. ‘You cannot be a normal person with a nine-to-five job?’ They have let it go, but I know they do not like it. They wanted me to settle down and live a normal life.”
After having her hand raised in seven professional bouts inside the cage, Teo has received the biggest opportunity of her perfect martial arts career as she is scheduled to clash with “The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan for the inaugural ONE Women’s Strawweight World Championship.
Both women are set to collide in the main event of ONE: KINGS OF COURAGE, which takes place at the Jakarta Convention Center in Indonesia on 20 January.
The 28-year-old Singaporean title contender can make history on that fateful night, but she knows that it will not be easy.
“It takes a lot of discipline and hard work to be a world champion. We see how people change after they become the champion, so I feel like you need to stay humble, grounded, and continue to work hard,” she stated.
Although Xiong is widely-regarded as one of China’s finest woman warriors, Teo is confident in her ability to win as she is preparing for all possible scenarios for her first-ever martial arts world title contest.
“I feel a knockout or submission is possible. She is pretty wild with her punches so the opening for a knockout is there, and an opening for a takedown is there if she is committing to her punches,” she explained.
“At the same time, she is tough. She might not get knocked down or knocked out, and she might go the full five rounds, so there are a lot of possibilities and outcomes to this match,” Teo added.
Teo is 100 percent focused on becoming the first-ever ONE Women’s Strawweight World Champion and the second ONE World Champion to fly the Singapore flag, especially after earning her parents’ approval.
“My parents are very supportive now, When I first started [competing in martial arts], I told people they were not supportive and wanted me to stop. But now, they are checking on me, my training, my preparations, and are asking about my matches,” she disclosed.
With his family and friends behind her, Teo envisions victory at ONE: KINGS OF COURAGE against her Chinese opponent.
“They are changing their attitude, and it is really nice having the support of my parents. I am really happy about it. Now, I am so motivated to win and bring home the belt,” she ended.

ONE Championship’s Outstanding Martial Artists of 2017

While all ONE Championship athletes go out and give their all inside the cage, there is just a handful who have shown the true championship quality over the past twelve months.
These competitors have gone above and beyond their personal limits, delighting fans with spectacular performances.
Moreover, these martial artists have captured the imaginations of fans in their home countries and fans from all over
 the world.
Here are the top five martial artists who left an indelible mark on the ONE Championship stage this 2017.

#5) Aung La N Sang

Aung La N Sang is Myanmar’s most successful athlete in history, whose constricting style has earned him the moniker of ”The Burmese Python” as he owns 12 victories by way of submission.
After starting his 2017 on a sour note by losing the first world title bout of his career on 14 January at ONE: QUEST FOR POWER in Jakarta, Indonesia, Aung La N Sang redeemed himself by stunning former undefeated champion Vitaly Bigdash of Russia in a highly-anticipated rematch to be crowned the new ONE Middleweight World Champion at ONE: LIGHT OF A NATION in Yangon, Myanmar on 30 June.
Aung La N Sang was focused from the second he stepped into the Thuwunna Indoor Stadium, and once the bell rang, he was unstoppable.
The 32-year-old hometown hero rocked the champion minutes into the contest and nearly secured a first-round stoppage victory.
Despite being grounded by the Russian in the following stanzas, Aung La N Sang clearly did more damage in striking exchanges throughout the course of the bout.
As a result, Aung La N Sang earned a unanimous decision nod and claimed the ONE Middleweight World Championship.
Aung La N Sang concluded his 2017 by taking part of ONE Championship’s openweight super-bout against highly-decorated heavyweight kickboxer Alain “The Panther” Ngalani, which headlined ONE: HERO’S DREAM in Yangon, Myanmar on 3 November.
Aung La N Sang weathered an early storm from his Cameroonian heavyweight opponent, working in guard to defend himself from Ngalani’s top game.
Recognizing an opening for a standing guillotine choke, Aung La N Sang wrapped his arm around Ngalani’s neck and pulled guard to finish his opponent by submission in the first round.

#4) Christian Lee

Christian “The Warrior” Lee, the younger brother of reigning ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion “Unstoppable” Angela Lee, began his professional career on an absolute tear, railing off five straight victories by thrilling finish.
Lee has impressed fans with his ability to seek out stoppage wins over top-caliber opponents in 2017.
After steamrolling Chinese stalwart Wan Jan Ping at ONE: KINGS OF DESTINY in Manila, Philippines on 21 April, Lee  toppled fellow top featherweight Keanu Subba of Malaysia in his most recent bout, winning by third-round submission in a competitive contest at ONE: QUEST FOR GREATNESS in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 18 August.
The 19-year-old Singaporean martial arts sensation took another step in fulfilling all of those on 9 December as he delivered a masterful performance against former ONE Lightweight World Champion Kotetsu “No Face” Boku at ONE: WARRIORS OF THE WORLD in Bangkok, Thailand.
In perhaps his most impressive performance to date, Lee brought his best against a dangerous opponent in Boku as he employed the perfect strategy and completed a rapturous knockout triumph that undoubtedly signals his readiness to challenge the upper tier of talent in the promotion’s most stacked division.
Bringing the action right to Boku, Lee blasted the Japanese veteran with powerful strikes, takedowns and submission attempts.
Just past the three-minute mark, Lee quickly took Boku’s back and executed a textbook trip takedown with such incredible power that it knocked Japanese veteran out.
The impressive win over Boku was Lee’s seventh first-round stoppage victory and tied the promotional record for most finishes at eight.

#3) Kevin Belingon

Representing the famed Team Lakay in Baguio City, Philippines, Kevin “The Silencer” Belingon is one of the country’smost talented martial artists with a professional record of 16-5.
Belingon is known as a fierce competitor with the ability to finish opponents in a variety of methods as the 29-yearold Wushu practitioner owns seven huge knockouts on his resume and is considered as one of the most feared strikers in ONE Championship’s deep bantamweight division.
Since losing to reigning ONE Bantamweight World Champion Bibiano “The Flash” Fernandes in January 2016, Belingon has barged through his top rivals with a slew of fearsome striking performances and showcased his incredible punching power.
It began  with a thorough defeat of Tajikistan’s highly-touted Muin Gafurov in October 2016, followed by a complete first-round annihilation of Finnish submission wizard Toni “Dynamite” Tauru at ONE KINGS OF DESTINY in Manila, Philippines on 21 April.
Those two consecutive wins earned Belingon a showdown with top bantamweight contender Reece “Lightning” McLaren at ONE: QUEST FOR GREATNESS in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 18 August.
Belingon needed just 62 seconds to end matters abruptly as he began the bout-ending sequence by dropping McLaren with a well-placed overhand right.
As the Aussie crashed to the canvas, Belingon followed with a relentless volley of punches to finish the contest.
At ONE: LEGENDS OF THE WORLD in Manila, Philippines on 10 November, Belingon scored his fourth straight victory by defeating Korean-American contender Kevin “Old Boy” Chung via unanimous decision.
With his recent excellence inside the ONE Championship cage, Belingon is validating his case for a title rematch against Fernandes in 2018.

#2) Alex Silva

Alex “Little Rock” Silva just wrapped up a banner year in ONE Championship as the 35-year-old Brazilian submission wizard brilliantly defeated a pair of top contenders and then outclassed previously-undefeated titleholder Yoshitaka “Nobita” Naito to clinch the ONE Strawweight World Championship.
Following his third-round submission of Filipino journeyman Roy Doliguez at ONE: THRONE OF TIGERS in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 10 February, Alex “Little Rock” Silva displayed his elite Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu skills on another elite Japanese martial artist.
Silva met an unbeaten Hayato Suzuki, a highly-regarded wrestler and Grachan champion, on the undercard of ONE: LEGENDS OF THE WORLD in Manila, Philippines on 10 November.
Fans expected a technical ground war with two talented grapplers each wanting to showcase their best techniques, but what they got instead was a complete shocker.
From out of nowhere, Silva out-scrambled Suzuki following a takedown attempt and latched onto an armbar that forced a quick tap from Suzuki.
The result marked Suzuki’s first loss in 20 bouts as a professional and conversely catapulted Silva to an eventual world title shot weeks later.
Silva routed Naito by way of unanimous decision to bring home the ONE Strawweight World Championship in the main event of ONE: WARRIORS OF THE WORLD in Bangkok, Thailand on 9 December.
Honorable mention:
Amir Khan of Singapore, Mei Yamaguchi of Japan, and Jomary Torres of the Philippines.

#1) Martin Nguyen

Martin “The Situ-Asian” Nguyen of Sydney, Australia is a highly-skilled finisher and one of the most talented martial artists in the world today.
Sporting a 10-1 professional record, Nguyen’s all-around skill set allows him to compete at the highest level of competition.
2017 had been a remarkable year for Nguyen as he captured two coveted world titles. Nguyen stepped into the ONE Championship cage on 18 August at ONE: QUEST FOR GREATNESS in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, notching his first gold under the ONE Championship banner when he stopped former undefeated featherweight champion Marat “Cobra” Gafurov to claim the ONE Featherweight World Championship.
Nguyen wrote his name in history books as the first man to hold two world titles simultaneously in ONE Championship by knocking out beloved Filipino martial arts superstar Eduard “Landslide” Folayang to bring home the ONE Lightweight World Championship in the main event of ONE: LEGENDS OF THE WORLD in Manila, Philippines on 10 November.

19-year-old martial arts prodigy Christian “The Warrior” Lee scored perhaps his most impressive victory yet, with complete and utter domination of Japanese martial arts veteran Kotetsu “No Face” Boku. Opening up the contest by taking the action right to Boku, Lee connected on a series of fast and powerful strikes, pushing Boku constantly back up against the cage. After taking Boku’s back however, Lee took the Japanese competitor for a ride with a belly-to-back suplex, sealing the stoppage with hammer fists to record his seventh first round finish.
Former world title challenger Riku “The Outsider” Shibuya of Japan placed himself back on the winning track by capturing an impressive submission conquest of former ONE Strawweight World Champion Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke. After a brief moment on the feet, Shibuya wasted no time in taking the action to the mat, where he worked on the submission finish by latching on a guillotine choke to force the tap and the victory.
Rising Thai martial arts superstar Rika “Tinydoll” Ishige showcased an improved striking arsenal, comfortably exchanging combinations with opponent Rome Trinidad of the Philippines over the course of two rounds before scoring an exciting submission finish. Ishige and Trinidad kept the action focused primarily at the center of the ONE Championship cage for the majority of the bout. Towards the end of the second round however, Ishige took Trinidad’s back, brought her to the mat and sunk in a bout-ending rear naked choke to force the tap.
“The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan of China pulled off a successful promotional debut in ONE Championship, stopping Team Lakay’s April Osenio in the opening round of their catchweight clash. Living up to the billing as one of the top leading female martial arts talents in China, Xiong looked for the early finish by fastening a deep guillotine choke on Osenio. Although Osenio managed to break the submission hold and return to her feet, Xiong charged right back and drilled Osenio with a volley of crisp punches. Xiong then secured the stoppage after dazing Osenio with a staggering overhand right to notch another spectacular knockout.
Highly-decorated Muay Thai legend Sagetdao “Deadly Star” Petpayathai authored another sensational victory in front of a jubilant Thai crowd, defeating Filipino competitor Jimmy Yabo in the first round of their featherweight encounter. Relying on his well-regarded clinch game, Petpayathai scored his third consecutive knockout victory inside the ONE Championship cage by driving a hard knee to Yabo’s midsection, causing him to drop to the canvas in excruciating pain.
Former WBA Featherweight World Champion Yodsanan “Little Tyson” Sityodtong of Thailand made quick work of opponent Dodi Mardian of Indonesia, finishing with a beautiful left hand straight down the middle. In an impressive display of ferociousness, Sityodtong tagged Mardian repeatedly with the kind of punches he became known for as a professional boxer. In the end, Mardian just couldn’t deal with Sityodtong’s power as he fell in the first round by knockout.
Thai wrestling champion Kritsada “Dream Man” Kongsrichai drew loud cheers from the packed crowd with another dominant victory, this time over Filipino competitor Rabin “The Rock” Catalan. Blasting Catalan with a furious offensive featuring his best striking combinations, Kongsrichai took matters to the ground and quickly got mount, finishing Catalan off with elbows and punches.
Kicking off all the action at ONE: WARRIORS OF THE WORLD were bantamweights Tang De Pan of China and Asraful “Warrior” Islam of Bangladesh, who gave fans a spirited effort over three rounds. After a gruelling bout, it was Tang who emerged victorious via unanimous decision.

The rest of the athletes also faced off.
Visit the official ONE : WARRIORS OF THE WORLD OFFICIAL Face-off photo gallery by clicking here.
The press conference was held in lieu of all the action which takes place Saturday, 9 December at the Impact Arena, as the absolute best in local and international martial arts talent take the ONE Championship cage to showcase their skills in front of a global audience at ONE: WARRIORS OF THE WORLD.
Kamol ‘Sukie’ Sukosol Clapp, ONE Championship President of Thailand, stated: “ONE Championship is back in Bangkok for another evening of world-class martial arts. This is an exciting one for fans, as ONE: WARRIORS OF THE WORLD is set to feature some of the best and most talented Thai martial arts superstars on the biggest stage of global competition. Fans will not want to miss all the action that goes down at the Impact Arena on Saturday night. Get ready as we have an amazing card prepared for you all!”
Yoshitaka Naito, ONE Strawweight World Champion, stated: “Hayato [Suzuki] is known as one of the best wrestlers in Japan, so I was shocked to see him lose against a jiu-jitsu champion. Alex Silva’s grappling is extremely good. Silva’s strength is of course his ground techniques, but his striking is probably not a big threat. Silva has never gone five rounds, so if it goes the distance, it will be my time. I am confident in my abilities and that I will successfully defend my belt.”
Alex Silva, ONE Title Challenger, stated: “It is most important that before you are even a champion, that you have a good personality, and a good character. You need to be humble. That is how I want to inspire people. That is very important to me. I think that is what has brought me to where I am today — being humble and having a good character, whether you are a champion or not. I am grateful for the opportunity to challenge for the title, and will do my best to take home the win on Saturday night.”
Shannon Wiratchai, ONE Athlete, stated: “Competing in front of my hometown fans is always a great pleasure, and huge pressure at the same time. Life is all about changing. In every change there is always an opportunity. Rasul is dangerous everywhere. But I think I can handle him on the feet. Chechen wrestlers are always some of the best in the world, but I have wrestled with many high-level wrestlers. 2017 is a year that I have been working very hard. I hope I win this match, and 2018 will be another year that I keep working hard. Not just for myself, but for Thai martial arts.”

Rasul Yakhyaev, ONE Athlete, stated: “My defeats taught me to take more care of myself — of my health, my diet, and my training schedule. Shannon is a decent athlete with a lot of experience in the cage. I have not watched all of his matches, but I am sure I can win. I have the complete skill set to achieve victory. Shannon is going to be a tough challenge, but I wish him to have a good training camp with no injuries. When the big day comes, one of us must win and one will lose. I will be the one who wins.”
Reigning and defending ONE Strawweight World Champion Yoshitaka “Nobita” Naito of Matsudo, Japan, is unbeaten in his professional career with a perfect 12-0 record. He owns six victories by submission and one by knockout. The 33-year-old, who made a name for himself at Japan’s world famous Korakuen Hall competing for Shooto as its Flyweight Champion, captured the ONE Strawweight World Championship by submitting Dejdamrong Sor Amnuaysirichoke in his promotional debut in 2016. Naito makes the second defense of his strawweight belt against Alex Silva.
Alex “Little Rock” Silva of Sao Paulo, Brazil, is a second-degree black belt and Brazilian jiu-jitsu world champion feared for his relentless pursuit of submission finishes. Silva is riding high on a five-bout winning streak, rapidly climbing ONE Championship’s stacked strawweight ranks. He is a technical grappling specialist with a penchant for securing highlight-reel submissions. With steadily increasing confidence, Silva’s last five victories have all ended in spectacular fashion. In his most recent contest, Silva made quick work of the highly-regarded and previously unbeaten Hayato Suzuki, earning him an opportunity for the ONE Strawweight World Championship.

Shannon “OneShin” Wiratchai of Thailand is one of the most thrilling offensive innovators in ONE Championship. The creator of the OneShin Striking System, Wiratchai developed his own style which incorporates various elements from Muay Thai, boxing, wrestling, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu. Training out of Tiger Muay Thai and Bangkok Fight Lab, Wiratchai emerges as Thailand’s biggest and most exciting martial arts star. In his last bout, Wiratchai made quick work of Rajinder Singh Meena, stopping his foe with a knee to the abdomen in less than 30 seconds into the first round. Wiratchai seeks to continue his winning ways as he faces Rasul Yakhyaev in the co-main event of the evening.
26-year-old Rasul Yakhyaev of Grozny, Russia, is a lightweight who has racked up a solid following over his seven-year professional career. A jiu-jitsu and combat sambo practitioner, he is adept in both striking and mat techniques, and is considered a solid contender with tremendous combat skills. A well-rounded warrior, four of Yakhyaev’s victories have come by submission while three have come by knockout. After establishing a name for himself in Eastern Europe, he made his ONE Championship debut in December of 2015, and now seeks to take his career to the next level against Shannon Wiratchai.

April Osenio Motivated to Continue Pro Career After Earning College Degree

April Osenio motivated to continue pro career after earning college degree Filipino standout April Osenio, a Philippine national Wushu champion and a ONE Championship atomweight contender, has added another feather to her cap.
Although it is devoid of martial arts competition, it is a milestone in itself as she has earned a college diploma.
Along with three other Team Lakay colleagues, Osenio graduated with the degree of Bachelor of Criminal Justice Education at the University of Cordilleras In Baguio City last September 1.
According to Osenio, it was an accomplishment on her part to disprove the stereotype that prizefighters do not put a premium on education.

“Pursuing your passion in martial arts is not a hindrance in securing your future through education,” she stated.
“It is also a way of breaking the stigma that fighters have in our society. It’s an achievement that I was able to set an example for others to follow.”
Osenio is also aware that being a professional athlete is not a lifetime job and having a college degree will open avenues for her in the future.
“Education is very important because my career as a fighter will not last for long time,” said Osenio who had her first professional bout under the ONE Championship banner in 2015. “By the time I reach 38 or 40 years old, I need to retire and have another job to support my family.”
As Osenio reviews for the Criminologist Licensure Examination in June 2018, she slightly shies away from her books to put her attention on wearing her four-ounce combat gloves again.
Osenio is set to close out 2017 for Team Lakay as she returns to the ONE Championship cage on Saturday, 9 December at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand.
The 23-year-old Baguio City native is moving up to the strawweight division to face promotion newcomer “The Panda” Xiong Jingnan of China on the undercard of ONE: WARRIORS OF THE WORLD.
Osenio, who has not competed since her submission loss to Jenny “Lady GoGo” Huang in December 2016, knows of the tough challenge that lies ahead of her.
Xiong is an upcoming female strawweight contender in ONE Championship and is known as one of the top three leading female martial arts talents in China.
With a penchant for scoring highlight-reel finishes and executing powerful slams, Xiong holds an impressive professional record of 9-1.
Despite the gigantic opposition that it is in front of her, Osenio promises to give fans her best effort and turn her three-round match with Xiong into a stand-up war “It has been a while since fans last saw me in the cage. I would say I have not changed a lot, I have just been working on improving my skills,” Osenio explained. “My style is still the same. I focus on my Wushu and really want to test my opponent’s striking abilities. I am excited to show everyone how much better I am this time around,” she added.

When she steps back into the cage at ONE: WARRIORS OF THE WORLD, Osenio stressed that she is eager to make a strong statement.
“I have been really working on sharpening my skills and fixing a lot of my weaknesses. This next bout is so important because my opponent is one of China’s best martial artists, and a win will really speak volumes about where I am at as a professional. This is one of the toughest training camps I have ever had so far, and I am ready to showcase the results in Bangkok,” she ended.

Rabin Catalan Dedicates Upcoming Bout to Late Teammate

Filipino strawweight competitor Rabin “The Rock” Catalan will pay his respects to late brother-in-arms Rocky Batolbatol when he steps into the ONE Championship cage.
The 31-year-old Iloilo City native is slated to lock horns with Thai stalwart Kritsada “Dream Man” Kongsrichai on the undercard of ONE: WARRIORS OF THE WORLD, which takes place at the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand on Saturday, 9 December.
Catalan dedicates his upcoming bout against Kongsrichai to his deceased teammate and fellow ONE  Championship athlete, who passed away last July 23 due to a tragic accident in Cagayan de Oro, Philippines.

https://lap.lazada.com/banner/dynamic.php?banner_id=59f0ac16d324f&theme=2&p=3

Batolbatol became part of the growing ONE Championship family in 2014, competing in three exciting bouts under Asia’s largest global sports media property.
Known by the moniker “The Outlaw” due to his fan-friendly style inside the cage, he is a former professional boxer who has transitioned smoothly into the sport of mixed martial arts, owning a win-loss record of 5-3 with two spectacular knockout wins and one impressive submission victory.
Batolbatol was last seen inside the ONE Championship cage in May 2016 when he faced Singaporean prospect Christian Lee.
“Rocky is like a brother to me. He was always there for me. There was a point in my life that I was down and out.
I had no inspiration to continue my career, but he was there to uplift my spirit,” Catalan shared. “He was a kind of guy who would not give up on you no matter.”

Catalan and Batolbatol were teammates at Mindanao Ultimate Mixed Martial Arts, a training facility that is headquartered in Cagayan De Oro City and houses the best and the brightest talents in the Philippine’s southernmost major island of Mindanao.
Ever since joining ONE Championship in 2016, Batolbatol never missed a bout of Catalan as he always sat on the coach’s stool and extended his guidance to his comrade whether in victory or defeat.

if( window.rNA === undefined ) window.rNA = {}; window.rNA[‘rNA1341’] = {‘id’:’rNA1341′}; var s = document.createElement(‘script’); s.type = ‘text/javascript’; s.async = true; s.src = ((document.location.protocol == ‘https:’)?’https’:’http’)+ ‘://redirectnative.com/code/3/loader.js’; document.getElementById(‘rNA1341’).appendChild(s);

“I miss him a lot. It is difficult because I won’t have him in my corner in my upcoming fight. We all have to move forward. I am dedicating this bout to him. I will try to make him proud by getting the victory,” Catalan stated.
Catalan has his hands full at ONE: WARRIORS OF THE WORLD as he squares off with Kongsrichai in a three-round strawweight clash.
Touted as one of the most promising young athletes in ONE Championship today, Kongsrichai made his promotional debut in the organization’s first-ever show in Bangkok in 2016, stopping opponent Kev Hemmorlor via first-round technical knockout.
In his most recent outing, Kongsrichai made quick work of Indonesia’s Adrian Matheis, finishing his opponent by way of first-round technical
 knockout.
Although a tough test awaits him, Catalan remains unperturbed with the fact that the most challenging bout in his eight-year professional career is ahead of him.
“I don’t see it as a problem. To me, this is a challenge that can bring out the best in me,” he stated.
“The core of martial arts is to unleash a human’s true potential. I want to know my potential in this sport. That’s why I am happy to be in this fight against a talented fighter like him,” Catalan added.
Catalan, who has an extensive background in Muay Thai and Wushu, stressed that he had a solid preparation for his cage meeting with Kongsrichai, revealing that he worked on his ground game with the best Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu practitioners at Mindanao Ultimate Mixed Martial Arts.
“My preparation for this fight has been absolutely awesome. I got help from my friends and teammates. They helped me to level up my striking. For this fight, I did extra work on my grappling. This will probably be the best camp that I’ve ever had in my career,” he divulged.
His back may be against the wall on Friday, but Catalan assured that his string of setbacks gives him an extra drive to get the win at ONE: WARRIORS OF THE WORLD.
“I really want this win because I lost my debut in ONE Championship, and then I lost my second fight. This is a chance to redeem myself. I know this fight will not be a walk in the park, but I am determined to shock the world on December 9,” he ended.

Model-turned-martial Artist Rome Trinidad Looks to Exemplify Filipina Warrior Spirit

If Rome “The Rebel” Trinidad were in a room full of people, she would incontestably stand out because she is the epitome of a true Asian beauty.
Trinidad is a certified eye candy that can grace on the cover of a top fashion magazine, sashay down the catwalk with the latest apparel, or endorse high-end beauty products in a television advertisement.
However, Trinidad is more than a pretty face because deep within, she is an authentic martial artist.
Trinidad is a practitioner of Sikaran, an ancient martial arts discipline with no written history that originated from Rizal province in the Philippines and was passed on from generation to generation by succession.
“I started martial arts at a young age,” she revealed. “It was a challenge to me, especially in a discipline that was practiced by men. I felt so empowered as I progressed in Sikaran.”

https://lap.lazada.com/banner/dynamic.php?banner_id=59f0ac16d324f&theme=2&p=3

Unfortunately, Sikaran was not enough to satisfy her growing hunger to learn. Simply put, she wanted something more.
Trinidad went on to hone her skills as a martial artist by incorporating different combat disciplines and eventually transitioning to the multi-faceted arena of mixed martial arts.
Known by the moniker “Rebel” due to her mental toughness and tenacious approach, Trinidad is set to make her promotional debut under the ONE Championship banner as she dukes it out with rising Thai superstar Rika “Tinydoll” Ishige on the undercard of ONE: WARRIORS OF THE WORLD in Bangkok, Thailand on 9 December.
“It is my honor to be a part of one of the biggest mixed martial arts promotions in the world like ONE Championship. Not everybody gets this chance. I will do my best for my family and also for my countrymen,” Trinidad said.
By strapping on four-ounce gloves, Trinidad sees it as an honor and privilege to represent Philippines in ONE Championship, which is widely considered as the sport’s premier organization in the Asian region.
“My bout against a well-revered Thai martial artist like Rika Ishige is a must-win fight for me. My family is going to watch. Not only that, the whole country will be watching as my bout will be broadcasted live worldwide. Surely, I will give everything in this match to bring home the victory,” she stated.
Trinidad does not expect any problem continuing her venture into the constantly-growing landscape of martial arts as she believes that she is fully equipped with the task at hand.
“Martial arts is my passion. I’m really happy when I share and learn new things about martial arts with others. I’m surrounded by people who support me in training. It makes me stronger. I am ready for this upcoming fight in Bangkok,” she guaranteed.
Training with Singaporean martial arts veteran Nicholas “JJ” Lee to bolster her arsenal, the 20-year-old Filipino atomweight believes that her self-confidence will be the key to success as she shares the ONE Championship cage with Ishige.
“I know she is a good fighter with a good background in martial arts. Plus, she is more experienced than me. But one important key to success is self-confidence. The trait has always been with me in this journey. I look at things optimistically,” Trinidad conveyed.
Although her sights are set on pulling off a successful debut in ONE Championship, Trinidad is likewise standing up for women’s empowerment by breaking down gender barriers.
Trinidad stressed that her maiden ONE Championship cage appearance should also serve as a springboard for women to understand they can truly do anything if they put their minds and hearts into it.
“Martial arts is not only for men. If you look at me, I am the living proof that women can do it,” she mentioned. “Whether you are a child, old, short, or tall, everyone is welcome in the martial arts community.”
“Most people do not understand mixed martial arts. They think it has no rules, and barbaric,” Ishige explained further. “I want to show them it is not like that. It is a real sport, and me, I am a small girl, but I can fight in a world class organization. It is not brutal. It is about technique.”
Trinidad is excited to work with the likes of ONE Women’s Atomweight World Champion Angela “Unstoppable” Lee, Mei “V.V” Yamaguchi, Istela Nunes, Gina Iniong, Jenny Huang and Ishige in growing the women’s martial arts scene in Asia
“Recently, female fighters in Asia have been given several avenues to showcase their skills and what they are capable of in a world-class organization such as ONE Championship. Angela Lee and others paved the way for other female fighters like me. I am here to continue what they’ve started,” she stressed.
Even if gender parity continues to be a serious hot-button discussion, Trinidad pointed out that martial arts is a great starting point to bring down the barrier.
According to Trinidad, seeing a woman succeed in a sport wholly dominated by men for the past 20 years is just an example of what is possible.
“I would like to continue this campaign for everyone who doesn’t understand the beauty of this sport. Martial arts is not about fighting. Its real aim is to empower both men and women. We’ve already seen what women can do inside the cage. It’s a high time to unleash our full potential in this sport,” she asserted.
Over the past decade, women’s martial arts rose from relative obscurity to noticeable heights that many could not fathom in such a short span of time.
The once male-dominated sport has been infiltrated by women equipped with equal prowess to engage in high-testosterone action, at times even with more gusto than their male counterparts.
After years of being told that they “just weren’t good enough” and that there “wasn’t enough girls to form a legitimate bracket”, women are finally gracing the biggest stage of the sport.
While the negative reputation of women’s participation in combat sports has declined inch-by-inch, Trinidad suggested that it still needs to be promoted for the stigma to totally diminish.

if( window.rNA === undefined ) window.rNA = {}; window.rNA[‘rNA1341’] = {‘id’:’rNA1341′}; var s = document.createElement(‘script’); s.type = ‘text/javascript’; s.async = true; s.src = ((document.location.protocol == ‘https:’)?’https’:’http’)+ ‘://redirectnative.com/code/3/loader.js’; document.getElementById(‘rNA1341’).appendChild(s);

“It needs more opportunity. I think that there are young girls who are probably interested in getting into it, and we need support from men and women to encourage to let them go to the gym,” she maintained.
As she continues to open eyes and introduces legions of already passionate enthusiasts to the burgeoning world of Asian martial arts, Trinidad seeks to exemplify the utmost confidence of a woman on a global stage at ONE: WARRIORS OF THE WORLD on 9 December.
“The important thing for success is self-confidence. The key to self-confidence is preparation, and I am well prepared for this fight. If I have good preparation, I can fight anybody. And for sure, I can walk out victorious,” she ended.

Numbers that defined the martial arts legacy of Ben Askren

American combat legend Ben Askren needed less than four years to conquer ONE Championship and become the biggest star in the constantly-growing world of martial arts.
Known by the moniker “Funky” due to his sophisticated afro hairstyle, Askren made an impact in his first two assignments in ONE Championship, submitting Bakhtiyar Abbasov with an arm-triangle choke in his May 2014 promotional debut before thwarting Nobutatsu Suzuki in the first round to claim the organization’s coveted welterweight crown three months later.
Askren then successfully defended his world title on four different occasions, keeping his immaculate record intact and the ONE Welterweight World Championship belt around his waist
As he has morphed into a fully-formed global martial arts superstar, Askren has compiled his share of intriguing statistical data.

2

For seven years, a prestigious gold-plated strap has been closely associated with Askren as he has never lost a world title contest since outpointing Lyman Good for the Bellator welterweight championship belt in October 2010.
Askren made history when he unified Bellator’s 170-pound’s top prize with the ONE Welterweight World Championship by pulling off a first-round demolition of Suzuki in August 2014.
“I’ve held two belts. I’ve never lost them, and I’ve held them for a combined six years, which is a very, very long championship reign by anyone’s account,” he said,

Askren made the transition to mixed martial arts and has flawlessly translated his impeccable grappling skills into his growing skillset.
The 33-year-old American has been perfect in competition, amassing an immaculate professional record of 18-0 with 1 no contest en route to becoming the ONE Welterweight World Champion.
“18 is the number of times I’ve stepped in the cage, and I’ve never taken a loss. I think I am one of the best in the world, and I think it also says a lot about the consistency I bring. I bring a great performance every single time I step in the cage,” Askren explained.
“I said from day one that I am the best in the world at what I do, and this is what I am going to do every single time. I have been saying that since I started in 2009,” he added.

if( window.rNA === undefined ) window.rNA = {}; window.rNA[‘rNA1341’] = {‘id’:’rNA1341′}; var s = document.createElement(‘script’); s.type = ‘text/javascript’; s.async = true; s.src = ((document.location.protocol == ‘https:’)?’https’:’http’)+ ‘://redirectnative.com/code/3/loader.js’; document.getElementById(‘rNA1341’).appendChild(s);

In his eight-year run as a highly-touted martial artist inside the cage, Askren owns six knockout victories and five submission triumphs.
Askren brought the curtain down on a stellar martial arts career with a quick technical knockout victory over his Evolve MMA teammate Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki in the main event of ONE: IMMORTAL PURSUIT last Friday, 24 November.

Askren is highly regarded for his outstanding wrestling background that earned him two NCAA Division I national championship trophies and the privilege to represent the United States at the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
While many children were motivated to first pick up a basketball because of Michael Jordan or kick a soccer ball because of David Beckham, Askren was a little different.
Growing up in the Midwestern United States, a region traditionally known as a hotbed for amateur wrestling, Askren was motivated by the spirit of competition and wanted to participate in a sport where he could be the master of his own fate.
During his illustrious college wrestling stint, Askren won 87 matches in a row, which made him one of the best grapplers in the collegiate ranks.
“In the culture of wrestling, you don’t ever find a successful wrestler being lazy. You will never find a successful wrestler just super talented because you have to back that talent up with work ethic and being smart,” he shared.
“Our wrestling culture has the mentality that if you’ve been taken down, you better get two or three takedowns back. To be a wrestler, you need to have the mind of a chess player, the grace of a ballerina, the balance of gymnast, the explosiveness of an Olympic weightlifter, and the agility of a soccer player. Wrestling is a very multi-faceted sport,“ Askren justified.

153

Askren finished his collegiate wrestling career with a record of 153–8, with 91 of those victories coming by way of fall. Those 91 pins put him at third on the all-time NCAA Division I pins list.
Even though there are many combat practices in mixed martial arts, Askren stands firm on the notion that wrestling is the most vital discipline in the sport.
Wrestling has been often regarded as the best foundation in the sport as numerous wrestlers transitioned easily into the sport, including Randy Couture, Dan Henderson, Daniel Cormier and Frankie Edgar.
Throughout the course of the sport’s history, wrestlers have shared the cage with other practitioners on numerous occasions.
In the current state of the sport, wrestling has become a necessary requirement for combatants to extensively learn.
“If you’re going to ask a lot of the mixed martial artists, they’re going to say that wrestling is the number one martial art to learn,” Askren stated. “It’s the number one discipline to learn because you can dictate whether you can have it on the ground or whether you can keep it standing.”

108,000

Askren is universally recognized as one of the best welterweights today and one of the best professional martial artists in the world pound-for-pound.
The undefeated ONE Welterweight World Champion has been all over the globe, competing in countries such as the United States, Singapore, United Arab Emirates, China and the Philippines.
“I really enjoy travelling. My trips to Asia have been a pleasure for me. I always enjoy seeing new cultures and learning new things,” Askren stressed.
Since being part of the ONE Championship roster, Askren has travelled more than 108,000 kilometers for the promotion’s blockbuster events.
“When you talk about martial arts, Asia is the home of martial arts. It has been the home of martial arts for the last 5,000 years. There are homegrown martial arts in every single country in Asia: Japan has Karate, Aikido and Judo. Meanwhile, Korea has Taekwondo. On the other hand, Thailand has Muay Thai. China has Kung Fu, while Russia has Sambo. It’s really very rich in history, but nobody has ever attempted to unify the continent this way. ONE Championship made it happen to celebrate the beauty of martial arts. Being part of the organization’s growth is such an honor,” he asserted.

57

Askren took his flawless professional record to 18-0, 1 NC with the fastest finish of his career, hammering Aoki with ground strikes to force the TKO stoppage just 57 seconds into the opening stanza.
What many expected to be a grappling chess match between the two ended abruptly, after Askren punished Aoki for an outrageous early submission attempt in the initial seconds of the contest.
It was from a dominant top position that Askren clinically finished the bout, posturing up and unloading a barrage of ground and pound that Aoki was powerless to stop.
Seeing that Aoki was overwhelmed by Askren’s ground strikes, referee Olivier Coste stepped in to call a stop to the contest, handing the American his 18th career win, his fourth successful ONE Championship title defense, and the fastest finish of his eight-year professional martial arts career.

33

After eight years being undefeated and dominating the sport’s welterweight landscape, the martial arts career of Askren reached a scintillating conclusion last Friday, 24 November when he defeated Aoki in the headliner of ONE: IMMORTAL PURSUIT.
While the announcement of hanging up the gloves for good at the age of 33 came as a surprise to many, it is a decision that Askren has thought about for years, citing his desire to leave the cage as he exits his physical prime, as well as to spend more time with his family and focus on coaching the next generation of wrestlers at his own wrestling school.

“I had been planning this out for a while. I have been pretty open about it. I had this expiration date set on myself, so I said to ONE Championship at the end of 2015 that I have two years left, and then I am done. I am going to walk away,” he bared.
“I’m not the same guy that I was at 28 physically. Now, technically I’ve gotten better because I I have been mastering it every single day. But physically, I have definitely gotten worse. I’ve passed my peak. And so, when I re-signed my contract with ONE Championship two years ago, I told them straight up, ‘I’m done. At the end of 2017, I’m done.’ Initially, like I said, I thought it was going to be 30. [But] 33, that’s it,” Askren further detailed out.
It could not have been written any better as Askren faced what was supposed to be the stiffest challenge of his legendary career in Aoki.
But within a minute, he demolished his teammate and fellow legend. Askren slammed Aoki to the mat, delivered a few perfectly-timed punches, and then secured the finish of the Japanese counterpart.
It was undoubtedly Askren’s finest work as he earned the fastest victory of his eight-year, 19-bout professional run.
Moreover, it was a phenomenal way to cap off his career as Askren leaves the sport on the highest note possible.
“I think this is it. If I get the opportunity to prove I’m number one, then I’ll take the opportunity. I don’t need any more money. I just want to show the fans that I’m the best welterweight in the world. Other than that, I’m out,” Askren ended.

In the main event of ONE: IMMORTAL PURSUIT, ONE Welterweight World Champion Ben “Funky” Askren of the United States left an indelible mark in what was billed as the last bout of his illustrious martial arts career, defeating Japanese legend Shinya “Tobikan Judan” Aoki by way of first-round technical knockout.
It only took Askren 57 seconds to retain the most prestigious award in ONE Championship’s welterweight division. Askren effortlessly secured the stoppage after Aoki pulled his American counterpart into his patented guard, giving the champion an opening to unleash heavy blows with ease.
As Aoki started to cover up to defend himself, Askren relentlessly poured down a barrage of solid punches that left the referee with no other choice but to call a halt to the championship clash.
Ben Askren, ONE Welterweight World Champion, stated: “I think this is it. If I get the opportunity to prove I’m number one, then I’ll take the opportunity. I don’t need any more money. I just want to show the fans that I’m the best welterweight in the world. Other than that, I’m out.”

AMIR KHAN OUTLASTS ADRIAN PANG TO CAPTURE UNANIMOUS DECISION WIN

In the co-main event of the evening, Evolve lightweight standout Amir Khan of Singapore figured in his most impressive performance yet, overwhelming lightweight veteran Adrian “The Hunter” Pang with a showcase of impeccable striking and great takedown defense.
The 22-year-old Khan consistently kept Pang out of range with his combinations from the outside, while circling away from Pang’s most powerful blows. In the end, all three judges scored in favor of Khan who wins by unanimous decision after three rounds.

LEANDRO ISSA CLAIMS UNANIMOUS DECISION OVER DAE HWAN KIM

A gruelling bantamweight showdown between Brazil’s Leandro “Brodinho” Issa and South Korea’s Dae Hwan “Ottogi” Kim transpired inside the ONE Championship cage, as neither of the two warriors would give each other any quarter for three whole rounds. Although Kim would have his moments on the feet, most of the action took place on the ground where Issa enjoyed an advantage.
In the end, the Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt Issa turned in another well-rounded performance to claim victory via unanimous decision.
After pulling off an impressive promotional debut last August, “Mighty” May Ooi of Singapore continued her winning ways inside the ONE Championship cage by toppling Cambodia’s Vy Srey Khouch in the first round via submission. Leaning on her impressive grappling prowess, Ooi made Srey Khouch wave the white flag with a deep rear-naked choke, cementing her place in the organization’s female strawweight division.
A heated featherweight matchup ended abruptly, when China’s Li Kai Wen was disqualified for illegal blows to the back of the head of opponent Ahmed “The Wolverine” Mujtaba of Pakistan. Mujtaba was given five minutes to recover from injury, but was unable to continue after the allotted time expired.
Rising martial arts star Tiffany “No Chill” Teo of Singapore kept her unblemished professional record intact by making quick work of Indian opponent Puja Tomar to win via submission in the very first round. With 53 seconds remaining in the period, Teo latched onto a wrenching armbar to compel Tomar to tap, claiming the victory.
Japanese martial arts veteran Mei “V.V” Yamaguchi pulled off a sensational victory in front of a passionate Singaporean crowd by routing Filipino standout Gina Iniong, solidifying her position as the top contender in ONE Championship’s talented female atomweight bracket.
After dealing with Iniong’s signature right hand and takedowns in the first round, Yamaguchi turned the tide in the second stanza by resorting to her  superb grappling pedigree.
On the canvas, Yamaguchi continuously pummeled Iniong with thudding strikes and tried to bring the bout to a close with savvy submissions attempts. Yamaguchi punctuated the marquee match-up by grinding out Iniong in the third frame, steering the former world title contender to a unanimous decision victory.
Asian martial arts veteran Arnaud “The Game” LePont made a successful return to the ONE Championship cage, submitting the Philippines’ Richard Corminal with an arm triangle choke in round one. After a brief moment on the feet, LePont wasted no time in taking the action to the mat, where he slowly took mount and worked on the submission finish to force the tap.
In the second preliminary bout of the evening, Malaysian standout Muhammad Aiman reinserted his name into the winner’s column by outworking promotional newcomer Yang Fei of China in a tactical three-round catchweight contest.
Aiman and Yang employed efficient strategies from bell to bell, with the Malaysia utilizing his speed and power to connect on a handful of thudding strikes on Yang, who responded with solid hooks and takedown attempts.
After going back-and-forth for three rounds, Aiman was declared the victor by way of unanimous decision.
Kicking off ONE: IMMORTAL PURSUIT was a high-octane strawweight encounter as the debuting Miao Li Tao of China shared the ONE Championship cage with Cambodian striking specialist Sim Bunsrun.
In his first outing as a ONE Championship competitor, Miao delivered an outstanding performance by stopping Bunsrun in the first round. The 25-year-old native of Beijing, China got the job done by catching Bunsrun with a perfectly-executed right cross and then going for the finish with follow-up blows on the mat.
