1st Kabataan Iwas-Droga: Sports tournament Results

BNHS Molino and Tabing-Dagat, Zapote and MaboloES, big winners in the 1stPSC KID SOS Tournament

Young Badminton players from Bacoor National High School (Molina Main) and Zapote Elementary School dominated the sport while BNHS – Tabing-Dagat and Mabolo ES topped table tennis during the 1st Kabataan Iwas-Droga: Start on Sports tournament held on November 11-12, 2017 at the Theresian School of Cavite. Gawaran Campus of BNHS came up big in Chess for the Secondary level while Aniban ES and Niog ES fought tooth and nail in the Elementary division. 158 student-athletes from 14 public schools of Bacoor participated in the competition that strengthens the Philippine Sports Commission’s sports development from the grassroots.
Prior to the tournament, a 4-week sports clinic was conducted at STRIKE Gymnasium – Bacoor City Hall from July 21 to August 13.  Over 600 kids from 38 public schools joined the weekend trainings which were made possible through the collaboration of the Commission, local city of Bacoor thru Mayor Lani Mercado, and the Department of Education.
Commissioner Arnold Agustin added that the program also coincides with the President’s campaign against drug abuse. ‘We want the kids to use their free time in worthwhile activities – be fit and healthy, have them focus on sports rather than taking part in negative behaviors and activities.’ he continued. He references the likes of Wesley So and Sarah Jane Barredo who are now making waves in the international scene of chess and badminton, respectively. Both are natives of Bacoor.
Angelo Bajamudin was probably the biggest winner of the tournament. Right after his win in Badminton (Singles Secondary), he was offered by a scout of the University of Perpetual Help – Dalta System for a scholarship and play in the NCAA. “Ito po talaga ang pangarap ko, gamitin ang badminton para makapagtapos ng pag-aaral.”, confided by the 16-year old Molino High talent.
“This is also one of PSC’s mission in holding sports activities – to identify and tap raw talents that can be polished into gems to join the nation’s sports workforce in the future.”, Commissioner Agustin concluded.

Musikaramay Basketball: 3×3 Para sa Marawi: Uniting Filipino through Music and Basketball to help rebuild Marawi.

The month of October marks the 4th year anniversary. Musikaramay or “musika na nakikiramay” is a community of people in the music industry wanting to be real-life superheroes through music.
Also known as “busking for a cause”, Musikaramay goes around the metro setting up in public places to play for their chosen beneficiary. In 4 years, they have raised funds for the ff:

• Yolanda Survivors in Palo, Leyte
• Rehabilition for Zamboanga Children
• SAF 44
• Kids with cancer at the National Children’s Hospital
• Raincoats, boots and umbrella donations to indigenous kids in Subic

As of the moment, we have 20 scholars at the Blessed Ville Special School in Cavite which came from donations during their performances in the streets of Manila.

In celebration, Musikaramay will be staging the Musikaramay Basketball: 3×3 Para sa Marawi, a FIBA-endorsed Basketball League powered by Triple Threat Manila.

Nov 6, 2017, 8am to 6pm at the Cuneta Astrodome, 28 teams. 112 players. 7 hours of community basketball uniting different personalities from the music industry, will raise funds for our internally displaced brothers and sisters in Marawi through the help of Alagang Kapatid Foundation, Inc.

With the essence of “BAYANIHAN” coming to life again, Co-presented by Globe Telecom thru the support of City Mayor Tony Calixto, Vice Mayor Boyet Del Rosario, Congresswoman Emi Calixto Rubiano, Councilor Ding Santos and the members of Sangguniang Panlunsod and Office of Senator Sonny Angara.

Jr. NBA Philippines All-Stars cheer up kids at Philippine Heart Center

Jr. NBA Philippines All-Stars cheer up kids at Philippine Heart Center

Jr. NBA Philippines All-Stars Jarrell Lim (2011) and Tyler Tio (2013) dropped in at the Pediatric Ward of the Philippine Heart Center (PHC) to distribute stuffed toys and lunch boxes to young heart patients in an NBA Cares activity. The two All-Stars were accompanied by Jr. NBA Coach Ruben Lanot and staff of Larc&Asset PR.
The three Jr. NBA personalities went from ward to ward to talk to the kids and spread Christmas cheer. Besides giving gifts, the basketball personalities encouraged the kids to continue their battle against their various conditions.
PHC Chief Nurse Raquel Tejada said the Jr. NBA visit did a lot to raise the morale of the children and their parents and inspired parents of previous patients to also engage in charitable works for the kids during the Holiday season. This is an on-going activity of the Jr. NBA players and Larc&Asset PR.
Jarrell Lim, who is playing for the UP Fighting Maroons, and Tyler Tio, who will soon suit up for the Ateneo Blue Eagles said the Christmas activity was truly heart-warming and gratifying. “We will definitely be back next year and would like to involve more Jr. NBA players in this simple but meaningful endeavor. The Jr. NBA is all about inspiring kids and reaching out to children who need cheering up the most is definitely part of our definition as NBA goodwill ambassadors,” said Jarrell Lim.
Jr. NBA Philippines, the grassroots program of the National Basketball Association, will be back in action on January 2017. Boys and girls aged 10-14 years old are encouraged to join the program which is now on its 10th year in the Philippines.

Kevin Durant Still Love OKC

Kevin Durant Still Love OKC

Kevin Durant, the former main man of the Oklahoma City Thunder, an All-star and a hero to the Oklahoma sporting community may have left to play for another city but it does not mean that he have forgotten the place where he spent eight long years of his NBA career.

Kevin Durant may be playing for the Golden State Warriors but his heart still belongs to the Help Positive Tomorrow Children in Oklahoma City school for the homeless children. During his time in OKC he has always pledged to help the homeless children and this year is no different as he once again donated $57,000 from his Durant’s charity foundation.

Youth Sports Advocacy Philippines, Inc. (YSA) is a non-profit organization that uses sports to make the youth become better individuals. YSA is composed of individuals with burning passion and desire to share their skills and knowledge about sports to the youth. YSA holds free sports training sessions to the youth, one community at a time. YSA believes that the longer the youth play sports, the greater attachment they have to their community. Aside from the positive effects of sports in their health, their interpersonal skills also improve through socialization thus making them better individuals.

Activities

Training Sessions – YSA gives free training sessions in volleyball, basketball, football, badminton, flag football, net ball, table tennis, wrestling, touch rugby, track and field, lawn tennis, and fencing to children ages 4-17 years old.

Mini Olympics – These are friendly games that serve as healthy competitions among the children that promotes teamwork, camaraderie and discipline. These are usually held after several training sessions in the community.

What is Athlete’s Social Responsibility (ASR)? How can you be a part of it?

What is Athlete's Social Responsibility (ASR)? How can you be a part of it?

WHAT is ASR?
ATHLETE’S SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY (ASR) – the responsibility of athletes to give back to the community by sharing their passion for sports to the youth
YSA’s 13th Ten Accomplished Youth Organizations (TAYO) Awards experience paved the way for the organization’s realization of its true potential to be an instrument of social change through sports. Volunteerism has been the backbone of YSA’s success and we were inspired to promote volunteerism more.
Through our advocacy, athletes had the opportunity to volunteer and share their experience to our aspiring youth athletes. Everyone in the group actually saw the development of the athletes and the community. As much as we want to go around all over the Philippines, we can’t because YSA can’t do this alone. We need more athletes to help out and give back to their own communities. We need more athletes to realize that they should be socially responsible to commit to the idea of Athlete’s Social Responsibility. Hence, the birth of this project – Athlete’s Social Responsibility (ASR).
YSA defines ASR as the responsibility of athletes to give back to the community by sharing their passion for sports to the youth. It is not just about teaching the youth the required skills but also instilling good values to them through play and at the same time unleashing their potentials. Through ASR, we aim to make athletes become socially responsible and to start creating positive social change in different communities.
WHY ASR should exist?
1. There are many young people who are interested in sports who don’t have the opportunity to learn and this could mean a lot of potentials that are waiting to be unleashed. The more youth who do not have access to sports also means more youth are being deprived of the benefits of playing sports.
This is where we see athletes as instruments in spreading the power of sports to the youth. By encouraging athletes to take part in ASR, they are also helping the youth do away with bad habits and sedentary activities.
2. Many athletes do not see their potentials to affect social change. Through ASR, we want them to realize that there’s more to life than winning games and becoming the best athletes that they can be. We want them to realize that they can use sports to inspire the youth not just to become good athletes but also become champions in life.
3. ASR simply supports the fact that sports can unite people. By instilling the value of volunteerism to the athletes and using sports to make the youth become better individuals, we believe that ASR will contribute in nation building through sports.
HOW can you support ASR?
1. To become a socially responsible athlete you just need the following:
1. Passion for sports.
2. Willingness to share it.
3. Time to share it to the youth.
Start with the youth in your community. YSA only started with 3 kids and now we have more than 100 aspiring young athletes in one community and counting. Don’t wait for the right time to give back, make time for it. Start with what you have wherever you are.
2. Help us promote ASR by sharing our photos and videos on our Facebook page
3. Join the ASR Challenge by joining our Facebook volunteers’ group.

Actress Diana Menezes Supports Pedal for HIV

You do not see many people today who combines their advocacy with the love of sports or physical exercise. Faustine Angeles is one of those rare few. He plans to spread HIV prevention awareness on different parts of the country on a bicycle. Being an athlete himself, he mentioned that physical exercise or sports would help someone with the HIV Virus to stay strong and healthy. With the help of Victor Silva of Brazil, they hope to accomplish a noble mission by empowering the youth about HIV and put an end to prejudice.
One interesting part of this campaign is that the poster it self was made with a drop of Faustine’s blood infected with HIV. The reason being is because he wants to show everyone that touching someone infected with the virus is something that is not contagious. (The small red dot on the poster is a drop of his blood). The press conference today was graced by actress Diana Menezes who is whole heartedly supporting the campaign her self.

Pedal for HIV " Tour de PIlipinas” Poster

“HIV Positive Poster Tour de PIlipinas”

A drop of HIV-positive blood.
Would you step back and move away from it?

The HIV epidemic in the Philippines has been described as “explosive,” with the fastest rate of increase in new HIV cases globally. While other countries have managed their HIV epidemics and are now witnessing a significant decline in the number of new cases, the Philippines has recorded sharply increasing rates of new infections.

An HIV awareness campaign that aims to reduce the stigma associated with HIV through the innovative HIV-Positive Poster will be holding its Tour de Pilipinas, visiting key sites in the country starting this February. The HIV-Positive Poster, which is one of the main features of the awareness campaign, is made with a drop of HIV-positive blood.

The HIV posters were originally developed by Grupo de Incentivo a Vida (GIV), a non-government organization based in Brazil. Made with a drop of blood donated by a person living with HIV (PLHIV), the posters carry messages that explain how HIV is transmitted, and underscore that people can NOT get HIV from the poster, or from casual contact with a PLHIV. The HIV-Positive Poster campaign has won international awards such as the Bronze Lion at the prestigious Cannes Film Festival – Press Category.  The poster was first released in Asia (in the Philippines) by Pedal for HIV, in partnership with GIV – Life Support Group.

Tour de Pilipinas, organized by Pedal for HIV and GIV, aims to:
  • Increase visibility of the HIV Positive Poster
  • Provide information on HIV
  • Empower the youth to became advocates
  • Reduce HIV stigma & discrimination

Faustine Luell T. Angeles Jr., founder of Pedal for HIV, will be travelling to key sites together with two representatives from the Brazil-based GIV – Life Support Group. Tour de Pilipinas will have the following schedule:

Banaue – 16 February
Palawan –23 February
Cebu – 1 March
Boracay – 6 March
Iloilo – 10 March

The specific venues in these locations will be announced later.

Tour de Pilipinas is organized in partnership with The Red Whistle, an HIV awareness campaign that uses the arts and social media in its advocacy to normalize HIV and AIDS. Sponsored by Premiere Condoms, Spyder Philippines, Catch Restaurant, Hooch Bar, 2GO Travel, HOWWWL Digital, Hotel Centro, WhenInManila.com & GoPro.

Dying Fan’s Wish is to See Idol Mark Caguioa

Ginebra Mark Caguioa Grants Wish of Dying Fan

Mark Caguioa may be one of the most recognized names in Philippine basketball. He had accomplished a lot from his career and he will definitely be remembered as one of the best players, if not from the PBA, maybe from Ginebra’s franchise history. The Spark has definitely given many fans thrills and excitement whenever he plays on the court.
Aside from his achievements on the court, Mark is also a man with a soft heart. While not everyone will keep record of this, a lot of fans will surely remember this act of kindness from Mark Caguioa as he grants a wish of a dying fan.
Papa Gani is a die-hard Ginebra fan and one of his last wishes is to meet his idol during his remaining time. He is one of those people who unfortunately know how much they have left to live and their only desire is to get their final wishes fulfilled. Papa Gani is suffering from chronic kidney and heart failure. Her daughter, also a Ginebra fan, was the one who made way for his dad’s wish come true. She was the one who posted the request on social media and the Ginebra community helped ensure that Mark Caguioa gets the message.
Papa Gani will remain a Ginebra fan and is hoping to see the next season to once again see his favorite player and team play the sports he loves. We can only hope he gets healed, after all he also a believer of the ” Never Say Die” attitude.

Jr.NBA Philippines Spreads Holiday Cheer at Philippine Heart Center

Dozens of children battling different heart illnesses received stuffed toys and a lot of Holiday cheer from Jr. NBA/Jr. WNBA Philippines presented by Alaska this Christmas when Jarrell Lim, Jr. NBA Philippines All-Star and Alaska Goodwill Ambassador 2011 and Jr. NBA Coach Ruben Lanot visited the Pediatric Ward of Philippine Heart Center this December. Apart from the gifts, the UP Fighting Maroon guard and Coach Ruben encouraged the kids to continue their battle against their various conditions and played with them in their newly opened Play It Forward Play Space. Dr. Ina Bunyi, Section Chief, Pediatric Cardiac Rehabilitation of the Philippine Heart Center and her staff thanked the Jr. NBA Philippines representatives for coming and cheering up the young patients. “The toys and your words of encouragement made these young heart patients happy. You have set them on the road to recovery,” she said. Above, Jarrell Lim (left) and Coach Ruben Lanot (right) offer a toy to a young heart patient as Dr. Bunyi looks on.
