Former World 9-Ball and 8-Ball champion Ronato “Volcano” Alcano and 3 other Filipino cue artists made it to the next round of the World 8-Ball Pool Championship 2011 after hurdling separate opponents in the round-of-32 at the Fujairah Exhibition Center in Fujairah, United Arab Emirates.

Alcano, one of Jonathan Sy’s Negros Billiards Stable (NBS) players, defeated another former world champion in German Oliver “The Machine” Ortmann, 9-6, to advance into the round-of-16.

“Grabe ang hirap ng laban namin ni (Oliver) Ortmann. Buti may halong suwerte pa din,” said Alcano, whose World 8-Ball stint is supported by NBS, Energen and Kopiko.

Alcano’s next assignment will be 2009 World 10-Ball champion Darren “Dynamite” Appleton of the United Kingdom, who brought down Huidje See of the Netherlands.

Sharing the limelight are Dennis Orcollo, who edged Vincent Facquet of France, 9-8; Oliver Medinilla, who clobbered Vilmos Foeldes of Hungrary, 9-5; and Joven Alba, who beat Raj Hundal of United Kingdom, 9-7.

“Sana manalo sa round-of-16 ang mga Pinoy cue artists natin,” said Sy.

Orcollo will be going up against Shane Van Boening of the US, Medinilla will square off with Niels Feijen of the Netherlands and Alba will test the mettle of Basher Hussain of Qatar.

Chinese cue artists dump Pinoys, snare World Cup of Pool title

source: Rey Joble | gmanews.tv
There were no last-minute miracle from Team Philippines this time. The Chinese connection of Fu Jian-bo and Li He-wen made sure of that.

The Chinese pair jumped the gun early on their rivals to silence the Filipinos and their hundreds of supporters Sunday night and clinched the World Cup of Pool title with a smashing 10-5 win at the Midtown Wing of Robinsons Place in Ermita, Manila.

The Chinese duo defeated the combo of Dennis Orcullo and Roberto Gomez.

The triumphant Chinese duo pocketed the top prize of $60,000, but they will be remembered breaking the hearts of Filipino fans, who are accustomed to see every Pinoy player winning a major pool event.

The Filipinos have produced a number of world champions, the most notable among them is Efren ‘Bata’ Reyes, who have won both the World 9-Ball and World 9-Ball titles. Ronnie Alcano was another Filipino player who won double world championships – the 2006 World 9-Ball and 2007 World 8-Ball.

Alex Pagulayan, women’s World 10-Ball champion Rubilen Amit and the newest world champion – Francsico ‘Django’ Bustamante – were the other world titlists for the Philippines.

But Fu and Li came here with a mission, which is to snare the World Cup of Pool even against the Pinoys’ expense.

The Chinese took the fight out quickly from the Filipinos, racing to a 9-1 lead and inching closer to winning the title as quickly as possible.

Orcullo, the former world No.1 player, and Gomez, runner-up to Daryl Peach in the 2007 World 9-Ball Championship in Manila, fought back and came to within 9-5, but an exchanges of safety shots forced Gomez to miss ball No.1.

That allowed the Chinese to get back and clean up the table en route to winning the crown.

Earlier, the Chinese pair knocked out a crack duo from Germany – double world champion and former world’s No.1 player Ralf Souquet and Oliver Ortmann – 9 to 7.

Orcollo, Gomez cruise to Final 8

By Nelson Beltran (The Philippine Star)

MANILA, Philippines – Dennis Orcollo and Roberto Gomez toppled their Spanish rivals last night and host Philippines remained in the running for successive championships in the World Cup of Pool 2010 at the Midtown Wing of Robinson’s Place Manila.

Among those considered heirs to the RP pool throne, Orcollo and Gomez crushed the Spanish pair of David Alcaide and Francisco Sanchez Ruiz, 8-4, to stay in the hunt for the crown surrendered by compatriots Efren “Bata” Reyes and Francisco “Django” Bustamante in a sorry loss Thursday night.

Orcollo and Gomez disposed off the Spaniards and set up a race-to-nine quarterfinals showdown with old Finnish rivals Mika Immonen and Markus Juva.

The young Filipino pool masters complemented one another in a decisive early roll, and had a big relief after defusing Spain’s late charge.

“It was a total team effort. There was so much pressure and we helped one another building our confidence,” said Orcollo, whose partnership with Ronnie Alcano made the semifinals last year.

“You saw us thumping our chests and doing other antics out there. It was our way to ease the pressure,” said Gomez.

The Filipinos were the first to get on board, and they went to the hill at 7-2 before committing errors, enabling the Spanish to hang on a little longer in the second-round match.

Fifth seed Germany, aching to go all the way to the top after placing second behind the Philippines last year, whitewashed Russia, 8-1, in their own Round of 16 setto.

Stepping up their game after a shaky 8-6 win over their Hong Kong rivals Tuesday, Ralf Souquet and Oliver Ortmann stormed past Konstantin Stepanov and Ruslan Chinakhov.

Later on, Poland pulled off a huge upset, beating second seed Team USA, 8-7, in a wild finish.

Radoslaw Babica and Mariusz Skoneczny had a solid start but wavered in the late racks enabling Rodney Morris and Johnny Archer to nearly overcome a 4-7 deficit.

Keeping their nerves in the crunch, Babica and Skoneczny survived a hill-hill encounter and booked a seat in the next round against the seventh ranked Taiwan team.

France and Finland stunned higher-ranked rivals Sweden and Holland, respectively, to likewise clinch berths in the quarters.

The French pair of Stephan Cohen and Francois Cottance survived a thrilling match with Englishmen Daryl Peach and Karl Boyes, winning the last two racks to get the match at 8-6.

Cunning and sharp, Immonen and Juva, meanwhile, simply outclassed Niels Feijen and Huidji See, 8-1.

Cohen and Cottance set up a quarters showdown with Souquet and Ortmann while Immonen and Juva arranged a quarters duel with the RP-B.

“A match with the Filipinos would be great. I would love that for the Filipino pool fans to see,” said Immonen, a former World 9-ball champion and regular fixture in Philippine pool events.

The Germans were the first to display a solid game in the day, winning the lag then racing to a 7-0 lead before yielding a rack to the Russians.

“It was almost perfect. I screwed up one position followed by Oliver missing a ball but they miscued so it came back straight to us. I’m satisfied but there’s still room for improvement and I still haven’t had my best game,” said Souquet, a multi-titled pool and snooker master.

“As long as we play this way, we will beat anybody,” said Ortmann.

“I expected a tough game with Russia but we played pretty good from the beginning so they didn’t have a chance to come into the game. It’s really important to win it from the beginning and that what we did,” Ortmann added.

World Cup of Pool: Russia eliminates Canada

source: abs-cbnnews.com

Billiards action at the PartyPoker.net 2010 World Cup of Pool started on Tuesday with teams from Russia, Indonesia and China gaining the upper hand over their respective foes at Robinsons Place Manila.

Russian partners Ruslan Chinakhov and Konstantin Stepanov came out of a 4-0 deficit to beat Canada’s Jason Klatt and John Morra, 8-4.

Team India, composed of Raj Hundal and Dharminder, erected a comfortable 5-1 lead against Indonesian duo Ricky Yang and Muhammad Zulfikri. The Indons, however, tied the scores at 6-6 before securing an 8-7 come-from-behind win.

The third match saw Chinese partners Fu Jianbo and Li Hewen trounce Belgium’s Serge Das and Noel Bruynooghe, 8-2.
This is the same Chinese team that reached the Top 4 of the 2009 World Cup.

The winning teams will advance to the Round of 32.

The Philippines, as tournament host, has 2 teams competing in the event.

Team A is made up of legendary partners Efren “Bata” Reyes and Francisco “Django” Bustamante while Team B is composed of veterans Roberto “Superman” Gomez and former World No. 1 Dennis Orcollo.

Reyes and Bustamante are the reigning title holders.

The event has put up $60,000 (roughly P2.5 million) for the winning team. — With a report from TJ Manotoc, ABS-CBN News

Bata, Django begin title defense

source: Francis Santiago | mb.com.ph

Revenge will be on the minds of Efren Reyes and Francisco Bustamante when they launch their title retention bid starting this Tuesday in the PartyPoker.net World Cup of Pool at the Robinson’s Place Midtown in Manila.

Reyes and Bustamante face off with the Thai duo of Nitiwat Kanjanasri and Surathep Phoochalam at 6 p.m. with the hopes of avenging their 9-ball doubles defeat in last year’s Southeast Asian Games.

The Filipino pair was ousted by the Thais, 7-4, right in their first match of the eliminations in Laos.

Of course, we want to get back at them,” Reyes, 55, said in Pilipino after the press conference hosted by Solar Sports on Monday.

Learning from their mistakes, Reyes said they should start strong.

They raced to a 4-0 lead against us and we never recovered,” Reyes said.

The two legends are leaving no stones unturned in their bid to retain the crown they won at the expense of Germany’s Thorsten Hohmann and Ralf Souquet, 11-9, in an enthralling final at the SM North.

That’s why Bustmante, even if he was in Germany last week on some business matters, said he’s perfecting his power breaks, which proved to be his Waterloo last time.

The fans will help us win because if our rivals hear their roar for us, it will be an advantage,” said Bustamante, who will be inducted to the Billiards Hall of Fame next month, joining “Bata” who made it to the elite roster in 2003.

Reyes and Bustamante, who also topped the maiden edition of the event in 2006, remain the favorites among the 32 teams seeing action in the $250,000 event that dangles $60,000 for the champion duo.

But Souquet and his new partner, Oliver Ortmann, will still post the greatest threat to their quest.

“I am dying for a win,” said Souquet, 41, Europe’s most decorated player. “I haven’t been winning the past three months and this (tournament) is a good opportunity to win.”

Hostilities start at 12 noon this Tuesday with Canada facing Russia, and Indonesia battling India.
