Danny Garcia Gallant on Defeat Against Thurman, Watch the Highlights

Danny Garcia is a young and proud boxer. Coming into the fight undefeated, you always have a feeling of assurance that you will claim that win again. But you also have a feeling of responsibility to continue winning and keeping up isn’t easy.
We all know that Danny Garcia lost against Thurman in what others would say as a controversial split decision.  Most undefeated fighters would have a hard time accepting defeat and even though his father was beginning to sound like a sore loser, Danny, the champion that he is, accepted the loss like a real one.
We are confident that Garcia will be back stronger than ever. Defeat if taken appropriately will always be a learning experience and we know that Danny learned from this fight.
Let’s watch the highlights of the match.

Vitali Klitschko KOs Solis in 1st round

COLOGNE, Germany – Vitali Klitschko retained his WBC heavyweight title with a late first-round knockout of Odlanier Solis, who injured his knee in the fall and insisted it was that — and not the champion’s punch — that ended the fight Saturday.
Klitschko‘s right to Solis’ left temple staggered the Cuban, who wobbled back then fell on his back and clutched his right knee.
Solis managed to beat the count but was unsteady on his feet as referee Jose Guadalupe Garcia of Mexico called the fight.

“It was a full blow,” Klitschko said in the ring, with the crowd in Cologne’s indoor arena booing.
Klitschko’s punch came in the final second of the first round, after Solis hit him on the chin with a right.
“It was definitely my knee,” Solis said, also in the ring. “It could be that I took a wrong step.”
He hobbled with help back to his dressing room and was taken to a hospital on a stretcher to have a scan on his knee.
Solis’ promoter Ahmet Oner insisted it was the injury and not Klitschko’s blow that ended the fight.
“He will now have a scan and probably have surgery immediately. He seems to have torn ligaments,” Oner said.
The sudden end stunned the crowd, which booed and whistled for a long time.
Solis, a 30-year-old former three-time world amateur champ, fell to his first defeat in 18 pro fights.
The 39-year-old Klitschko improved to 42-2.
Solis fought a solid first round, taking the initiative and connecting with a couple of rights despite giving up 6 inches in height to the Ukrainian, who relied on his left jab until the last-second punch.
Vitali’s younger brother Wladimir, the IBF and WBO champ, fights WBA belt-holder David Haye in June or July.
Solis, the 2004 Olympic champ, beat Haye to win one of his amateur world titles.

Cotto stops Mayorga to retain WBA title

(AFP) LAS VEGAS, Nevada (AFP) – Puerto Rico’s Miguel Cotto kept his World Boxing Association super welterweight crown by stopping Ricardo Mayorga of Nicaragua 53 seconds into the 12th round.

Cotto inflicted the only knockdown of the fight in the opening seconds of the last round during an exchange with a stunning left hook, staggering Mayorga, who went down on his knees and grabbed his left hand in pain.
“This hook was the one to decide the fight,” Cotto said after Saturday’s bout. “The whole fight was great but the finish was amazing.”
Mayorga rose and continued for a few seconds, but Cotto landed a stinging left to Mayorga’s chest and seconds later, the challenger stopped the fight, saying he could not continue because of his injured hand.
“My left arm, in one of those combinations, I felt it hit to the back of my hand and it started hurting,” Mayorga said. “I started trying to make a fist and I couldn’t. Then I said I couldn’t continue.”

Cotto improved to 36-2 with his 29th stoppage inside the distance in his first fight after a nine-month layoff that included right shoulder surgery.
Former world welterweight champion Mayorga fell to 29-8 with one drawn only three months after ending a 26-month layoff, then saying he would retire.
“I’m going to look for a job,” Mayorga said. “It’s time to retire.
Mayorga taunted Cotto in the weeks before the fight but told him after the bout, “I never meant any of those things. It’s all promotion. It’s all entertainment.” Cotto in turn never let the verbal sparring disturb his focus.
“He did not take me out from my calm.” Cotto said. “I just keep in my work and just be myself.”
Impressive exchanges began in the opening seconds, with referee Robert Byrd warning Mayorga about blows behind the head and low blows in round one.
Mayorga took a pair of hard lefts to the head, then shook his head to indicate they did not hurt him, a routine that played out throughout the fight.
In round two, Mayorga landed a solid uppercut and a pair of chopping right hands to the head, but Cotto answered with solid lefts, taking advantage of moments when the challenger tried to slow the intense pace.
Mayorga backed himself into a corner midway into the third round, taunting Cotto to come at him. The champion did press the attack, but would not be lured into letting down his poise and patience to brawl against the crafty veteran.
Cotto, coming off right shoulder surgery, showed no sign of trouble throwing right hands with strong punches and jabs.
Mayorga, who turned 38 on Thursday, had vowed to knock out Cotto in the fourth round but failed, although he did land five consecutive blows in a flurry at the finish.
Cotto, 30, had the best of several exchanges in the fifth round, scoring with solid left hooks and uppercuts.
“He hits really hard (but) he didn’t scare me,” Mayorga said of Cotto.
Mayorga stung Cotto early in round seven with a left to the body and solid rights to the head and again late in the round with an uppercut and several hard rights.
“Pretty strong fighter,” Cotto said of Mayorga. “He has pretty strong hands. He can win. He can beat anybody.”
Cotto used his jab to attack consistently but Mayorga counter-punched effectively with right flurries in the ninth and 10th.
Mayorga resumed taunting Cotto midway into the 11th round but the champion kept his focus and kept the challenger at bay, setting up the dramatic finish.
If Mayorga sticks to his decision to retire, he’ll have lost five of his final nine career fights. He also fell to Shane Mosley in 2008, Oscar de la Hoya in 2006, Felix Trinidad in 2004 and Cory Spinks in 2003.
Cotto now hopes for a chance to avenge a 2009 loss to Filipino superstar Manny Pacquiao or a 2008 loss to Mexico’s Antonio Margarito, whose victory was tainted by a one-year ban after glove tampering was discovered in the fight after he beat Cotto.

Among other potential future rivals is Mexico’s unbeaten Saul Alvarez, the World Boxing Council super welterweight champion.

Don King wants Mayorga for Pacquiao

source: Nick Giongco | mb.com.ph
The man on the other line sounded over-the-top. When the guy you’re talking with is Don King, you just give way, pull out a pen and a paper, listen and take notes.
video inside

In a short chat with His Hairness Wednesday, courtesy of rival promoter Bob Arum, King told the Bulletin from Florida that he has big plans this year with Ricardo Mayorga of Nicaragua as his pawn and Manny Pacquiao as their ultimate target.

You see, King is joining forces with Arum in staging a March 12 slugfest involving his fair-haired boy Mayorga and Miguel Cotto at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas and King is optimistic he and Arum will join hands again.

“We are going to make (Manny) Pacquiao versus Mayorga,” said King in his high-pitched voice immediately after being handed over the phone by Arum.

Pacquiao is under Arum and King believes Mayorga will secure a date with the Filipino pound-for-pound king with a smashing victory over Cotto.

“I am giving you breaking news,” hollered King, who met up with Arum in Hollywood, Florida, where Cotto held his media workout, reiterating the possibility of co-promoting Pacquiao-Mayorga.

King and Arum are instrumental figures in the 1975 Thrilla in Manila featuring Muhammad Ali and Joe Frazier and before hanging up, King told his interviewer that he “misses Manila so much.”

Bradley beats Alexander with unanimous decision

By LARRY LAGE, AP Sports Writer
PONTIAC, Mich. – Timothy Bradley’s fists and head-butts got the best of Devon Alexander.
Bradley defended his WBO 140-pound title and took Alexander’s WBC belt, winning a unanimous technical decision after the fight was stopped in the 10th round Saturday night at the Silverdome.

“I’m ruthless,” said Bradley, refusing to apologize for leading with his head. “I’m reckless.”
The ringside doctor ruled Alexander couldn’t keep his left eye open and halted the fight at 1:59 of the 10th after an accidental head-butt.
“I couldn’t see, so they had to stop the fight,” Alexander said.
Bradley (27-0) handed Alexander (21-1) his first loss in the biggest fight for each rising star.
“If that’s the best in the world, that’s weak,” Bradley said.
Both fighters took a risk by taking a bout either could lose, but the payoff could be huge.
The 27-year-old Bradley took a step toward a possible fight with Manny Pacquiao or Floyd Mayweather Jr. down the road, but WBA super lightweight champion Amir Khan could be his next opponent.
“I would love a chance with Floyd Mayweather,” Bradley said. “I think I’ve got to take Amir Khan out next, then there will be no doubt who the best 140-pounder is in the world.”
Bradley’s camp said earlier in the week that it would welcome a fight with Khan, if the time was not right for a bout with Mayweather or Pacquiao.
“Khan is probably No. 1 on the list,” Bradley said. “The key name on the list down the road is Manny Pacquiao.”
HBO, though, has a rematch clause in the contract to put Bradley, of North Palm Springs, Calif., back in the ring with the 23-year-old St. Louis southpaw.
“I want a rematch with Timmy Bradley,” Alexander said.
HBO executive Kery Davis isn’t sure the cable network will exercise its option.
“We haven’t made a decision,” he said.
In a fight that had to be tough to score with each fighter throwing flurries of punches, the judges all had Bradley ahead in the bout — 97-93, 96-95 and 98-93 — when it was suddenly halted because Alexander’s left eye was burning so much he couldn’t open it.
Alexander needed four stitches to close a gash between his right eye and eyebrow and two to the side of his left eye.
“He wasn’t hitting me clean,” Alexander said. “I thought I was ahead in the fight.”
Dr. Peter Samet said he asked Alexander to open his left eye three times and he couldn’t do it.
“I feared temporary nerve damage, so I recommended to stop the fight,” Samet said.
The beginning that led to the end for Bradley came in the third round when Bradley seemed to land a blow on Alexander’s right eye with a wicked combination of a thumb and head-butt.
The crowd was quiet when referee Frank Garza got between the fighters in the 10th after another head-butt — ruled accidental by Garza — sending Alexander to a corner to take a look at his eye before deferring to a ringside doctor in another corner.
“I did not want the fight to end that way,” Bradley said. “I really wanted to finish the fight.”
The fans did, too, and they made their displeasure known with a chorus of boos.
Alexander’s trainer, Kevin Cunningham, was disappointed Garza didn’t listen to his warnings.
“I told the referee that Bradley’s last six opponents had been cut by head-butts,” Cunningham recalled.
Garza, though, insisted the one in the 10th was accidental.
“It was a completely different head-butt than the previous one in the fight,” Garza said. “I stopped the fight after consultation with the ringside physician.”
The former home of the Detroit Lions and Pistons was configured to put the ring in a corner of an end zone, putting curtains up to create a relatively intimate venue with 9,000 seats on the floor and lower bowl. About half those seats seemed to be filled, but the announced attendance was 6,247.
Members of the military, police officers, firefighters, emergency medical service personnel and military veterans were admitted free if they showed up in uniform by the Silverdome’s new owners, who are trying to make the venue viable.
The Toronto-based company that paid $583,000 for the 80,300-seat stadium in 2009 — after it was largely idle for seven years — gave promoters about as much money to land the big-time fight.
“The site was worthy for this site,” said Gary Shaw, who co-promoted with Don King.
