Temple battles SMU in a nationally televised college football game Friday night.

Temple (7-1, 4-0) is off to its best start in school history and battle American Athletic Conference opponent SMU (1-7, 0-4) at SMU Friday night at 8 p.m. (E.S.T.) in a college football clash.
The game is being televised live on ESPN2.

The visiting Owls are coming off a 24-20 loss to then No. 9 in the Associated Press poll Notre Dame in their last game at home.

“I think (the Notre Dame game) just shows how good they’ve gotten and they have to find it out now,”  Temple head coach Matt Ruhle told the Associated Press this week.
In other words, the Owls shouldn’t be satisfied with their season yet, despite their lofty record through the team’s first eight games.

SMU has won just one game the last two seasons and the Owls are favored by 13 points Friday night by the Associated Press.

Javi ‘Mr. MVP’ Gomez de Liaño: UP’s next basketball superstar

In the recently concluded SMART Pilipinas Chinese Amateur Basketball League, Javier Joaquin Gomez De Liaňo was handed out the Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award.
Being a student in one of the country’s premiere universities is already a huge task, but being a student athlete in UP is an even harder endeavor especially when everyone is tasked to carry their team on their shoulders. But for this 4th year high school athlete of University of the Philippines Integrated School, nothing is impossible with the help of God and his family.
Born Javier Joaquin Gomez de Liaño on July 27, 1998 in Mandaluyong City to Norberto Gomez de Liaño and Anna Gomez de Liaño, this 6-foot-4 forward is ready to take the cudgels of UPIS to the next level. He scored his career high of 24 points in the UAAP season 77 basketball tournament against the Ateneo de Manila University.  His pre-game rituals include spending at least five minutes
alone so he could go over his past mistakes and do better in his next games. He also doesn’t forget to pray before every game.

If given the chance to have a one-on-one match up with an NBA player, he likes Giannis Antetoukumpo because he is one of the most exciting players in the NBA now. “Giannis is 6’ 11” and can bring down the ball and call the play” quipped Javi. The UP cager’s favorite shot is the pull up jumper.
He also follows his conditioning coach’s advice because it is very effective. The foods that can make him stay fit for the game includes banana, taho and soy shakes like vitamilk. His favorite basketball players are NBA’s Russell Westbrook of OKC Thunder, Jared Dilinger in the PBA, Mac Belo in the UAAP, and NCAA MVP Scottie Thompson. “Studying in the State University is not easy. You need to manage your time wisely so I study before our training starts so that when I get home, I could rest already”, said Gomez de Liaño. In pursuing his basketball dreams, he makes sure to take things step by step because he believes that these little steps will make a big impact on things that he has always been working for. He acknowledges that staying humble is also a key to one’s success in life.

Ateneo won 4th straight UAAP Championship

Like what I said the FEU don’t stand a chance against the Blue Eagles this year, and I am right the Ateneo Blue eagles sweep the FEU Tamaraws  for their fourth straight championship in the 74th UAAP men’s basketball finals at the Araneta Coliseum. 82-69 what a lame score by the the FEU Tamaraws. Nico Silva won the MVP award.

Adamson seeks rebound

Game Sunday (Smart-Araneta Coliseum)
3 p.m. — Adamson vs FEU
MANILA, Philippines — After scoring a stunning win over Ateneo that denied the Blue Eagles a rare 14-game sweep of the UAAP basketball tournament eliminations, Adamson University looked spent and miserable when they faced Far Eastern University last Thursday in the other half of the semifinals.
There was none of the aggressiveness and determination that characterized their epoch-making win over Ateneo and for this, the Falcons paid dearly with a 59-49 loss to the Tamaraws that will make their next encounter on Sunday a do-or-die game for both.

Don King says: Mayweather will knock Pacquiao out

source: Mark Vester | boxingscene.com

Promoter Don King is still looking to sign Floyd Mayweather Jr. to a promotional contract.

King has dreams of making the fight between Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao. If Mayweather signs the promotional contract, King gurantees to make him more money than he’s ever made in his career. King and Mayweather have been spending a lot of time together in the last few weeks and plan to continue talking over the weekend.

Whatever [Mayweather] makes, he could make more with me,” King said to The London Times. “No one can generate money like I can. I never cease to amaze myself. I’m a people person and Mayweather and Pacquiao would be a people explosion. It’s the fight the people want to see and they will come from all over the world to see it.” It will be like the Rumble in the Jungle. In those days you did not have the same media outlets that you do now. It would be a world extravaganza.”

King has a lot of respect for Pacquiao, but he doesn’t give him any shot of being able to beat Mayweather. When, and if, the fight ever comes together, King predicts Mayweather will knock the Filipino champion out.

“I’m not looking to do a deal just for [the Pacquiao fight]. I’m looking for him to be with me and for Pacquiao to be part of it. They are the two best pound-for-pound fighters in the world but Mayweather will knock Pacquiao out. Pacquiao has two chances: slim and none. And Slim just left town,” King said.

Pacquiao, Chavez to train together for Margarito, Cotto

source: Ronnie Nathanielsz | boxingscene.com

Top Rank promoter Bob Arum says young Julio Cesar Chavez Jr who battles Miguel Cotto for the WBO light middleweight title on December 4 will come to Manila to train alongside p4p king Manny Pacquiao as Pacquiao prepares for his planned November 13 title fight for the vacant WBC light middleweight crown against Antonio Margarito.

Arum told BoxingScene.com, insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports that trainer Freddie Roach who will be in Manila for the first part of Pacquiao’s training before he moves to the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles that “Freddie is also planning to take Chavez to train with Manny” which would be helpful to both fighters and is also likely to help increase interest among Filipino fans in the fights of Chavez.

The Top Rank promoter said Pacquiao will have to train in the last month before the fight at the Wild Card Gym in Los Angeles.

Arum who flew to Dallas on Wednesday said he had a fun time with Cowboys stadium owner Jerry Jones in a five-hour dinner-meeting and said “we really enjoyed ourselves.”

Talking about their conversations over Dallas being the site for a planned November 13 showdown between Pacquiao and Margarito, Arum revealed “it was a very worthwhile conversation but we are not going to make any statements until the 19th of August which is the day after the California State Commission hearing” on Margarito’s hand-wrap controversy for which he served a one year suspension.

Arum indicated that the California hearing will provide the Texas Commission “a chance to decide on Margarito’s application ” for a license to fight in Dallas.

180 years in murder of NBA star’s brother

BY KIM JANSSEN Staff Reporter/kjanssen@suntimes.com
FAR SOUTH SIDE | Quentin Richardson’s sibling gunned down in failed holdup
Lee Richardson Jr.’s sister forgave his killers in court Wednesday afternoon — but a judge wasn’t so lenient.

Career stickup man Ishmael Clark will almost certainly die behind bars after Cook County Judge Joseph Kazmierski sentenced him to 180 years for the murder of NBA star Quentin Richardson’s brother and the attempted murder of three Chicago cops.
Clark, 34, and co-defendants Elbert Dunnigan and Gino Wilson, robbed 31-year-old Richardson and his father, Lee Richardson Sr., at gunpoint at the Richardsons’ yard at 115th and Parnell on Dec. 5, 2005.
When the robbery went bad, they started shooting, killing the younger Richardson but missing his father — who survived by playing dead — before being captured after a wild 5-mile chase.
Clark, the getaway driver, hit and injured a Chicago cop with his “van from hell” as he fled, and he attempted to run down two more after leaving the Richardsons for dead in the snow, prosecutors said.
Assistant Cook County State’s Attorney James McKay told Kazmierski that Clark “doesn’t deserve to live,” urging a sentence of natural life.
Previous victims testified to Clark’s role in other brutal robberies.
But in emotional testimony, Richardson’s sister Rochelle Howard told the killers, “I forgive you for murdering my brother, and I pray that you will find a way to come to repentance.”
Howard said her father, who wasn’t in court, didn’t agree and wanted “no mercy” shown to the men who killed his son “right before his eyes.”
Clark, who had at least four prior felony convictions, showed no reaction as the sentence was announced, though a female relative ran from the courtroom crying and screaming.
Outside court, Howard hugged Clark’s mother but said her father would be pleased with the sentence. Watching Clark’s family’s reaction was “devastating,” she said.
She said gun violence, which also claimed the life of Richardson’s older brother Bernard in 1992, and the life of one of Clark’s siblings, “is a terrible disease in this city.”
Wilson was sentenced to 15 years in a plea deal before Dunnigan, and Clark were convicted at a bench trial earlier this year. Dunnigan is due to be sentenced Friday.

I came across this on Youtube and found very interesting. After the practice game Rafael Nadal and Djokovic are not yet done as they challenge each other to a new game they called the Soccer Tennis.

Both showed some skills and dexterity and although Nadal showed off his moves it was not enough to defeat Team Djokovic.

Boyfriend becomes "The Bailer" Video

Video Inside

Boyfriend chooses the better part of valor and ducks a foul ball, which strikes his girlfriend, earning him the nickname “Bailer”

HOUSTON — A young female Astros fan got a painful lesson in chivalry Monday night at Minute Maid Park.
The woman, identified only as Sarah, was struck on the right arm by a foul ball off the bat of Chris Johnson in the fourth inning while sitting down the left-field line — a ball that she didn’t see coming because her boyfriend ducked out of the way at the last second.

“As soon as we got here and I saw where we were sitting, I said ‘Baby, we’re going to get hit,'” the woman said when interviewed during the game. “He said, ‘No, I’ll catch it if you do. We just had this conversation and sure enough, the ball comes at me. He just bailed.”

The boyfriend, named Bo, wound up retrieving the ball, but he had one of the oldest excuses in the book as to why he lost flight of the ball.

“The ball was coming up and I was going to catch it and it was in the lights and I lost track of it,” he said.

Sarah was standing — or, in this case, sitting — by her man, even if she had a bruise to show for it.

Bout between James Toney and Randy Couture could bring boxing-vs.-MMA debate to head

By Lance Pugmire | latimes.com

The 41-year-old Toney, a former boxing champion in three divisions, has signed on for his first mixed martial arts event Aug. 28 against former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight king Couture, 47. The rhetoric is already heating up.

he Ultimate Fighting Championship started with arguments among fans about which combat discipline was superior.

A decade later, the debate has intensified. Former three-division boxing world champion James Toney, who was miffed when UFC President Dana White said boxers can’t stand up to mixed martial artists, has signed for his first mixed martial arts bout against former UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture on Aug. 28 in Boston.

“I called Dana White out and he had to save face,” Toney said.

The acrimony between the street-hardened Toney, 41, and White reached a peak this month when White confessed he “got caught up in the MMA-vs.-boxing thing,” and considered Toney’s participation a “freak show.”

“Toney will get his [rear] kicked on August 28 and I’m counting the days,” White said.

“Why wouldn’t I take this [bout]?” asked Couture, 47, who held the UFC heavyweight championship until November 2008. “I heard [Toney] was talking smack about MMA fighters, and that I was on his list of guys he’d knock out. Let’s do it. It’s an MMA fight, and has a lot of crossover appeal — I know the boxing world will be paying attention.”

Toney has spent eight weeks at a Chatsworth gym in two-a-day training sessions, trying to shed his reputation as an uninspired fighter during the latter stages of his boxing career.

“He’s a natural predator,” said Trevor Sherman, the MMA coach who’s taught Toney key grappling fundamentals so Toney can land devastating punches if he gets Couture to the mat. “No one has ever stepped into the octagon with this type of striking prowess.”

Toney said he grew frustrated last year in his attempts to land a heavyweight boxing match against the world champion Klitschko brothers, Wladimir and Vitali, as well as with another champ, David Haye.

Toney was looking on the Internet one day when he noticed White discussing the advantage MMA fighters would have over boxers in an MMA fight. Toney recalled some war stories his manager, John Arthur, told him about participating in no-rules “Sudden Death” fighting in Thailand in the 1960s.

“I’ve told James about sharpening my teeth for those fights, about using the four weapons of your hands and feet, and the joint manipulations I knew,” Arthur said. “He said, ‘Pop, I want to do what you did.’ Couture’s in a fight for his life. He’s never been in there with anyone as vicious. And I’ve never seen James get as up for a fight.”

Toney is looking forward to discovering how much damage he can do to Couture if he lands a punch in a four-ounce MMA glove — boxers typically use 10-ounce gloves. Toney smiled and said, “When they told me I’ll be using those four-ouncers, I said, ‘Oh, Lord, we’re going to jail.’

“I’m going to be representing boxing, and I’m a boxing master. The meanness, the nastiness. I don’t turn my back on anyone like [current UFC heavyweight champion] Brock Lesnar did in his last fight. I love danger. I know this fight represents some danger to me. I’m hitting it head-on.”

Toney (72-6-3, 44 knockouts) signed a three-fight deal with UFC, with an opt-out clause if he loses. But he expects to fulfill his UFC commitment, hopeful for a victory over Couture and a title shot at Lesnar, and he still wants to box too.

“He’s one of the nicest guys in boxing, and I’m glad he has this opportunity to make a few bucks,” boxing promoter Bob Arum said.

Yet, Arum said he didn’t view this fight as the ultimate answer to the question of what fighting discipline trumps all.

“If James hits [Couture] first, he’s going down. But if it goes to the floor, [Toney is] probably going to lose,” Arum said. “If this was a boxing match, I’d be watching it, but this is this cockamamie martial arts, guys rolling around on the floor. It’s not even a sport.”

Toney could be susceptible to the chokeholds or submission positions that former Olympic wrestler Couture can produce. “I’ll stand with him as long as I can to get him where I want: with him on his back and me on top of him,” Couture said.

Trainer Sherman says Toney’s grappling skills will be sufficient, with the primary focus being on unleashing a powerful punch. “Randy’s MMA arsenal is mind-numbing, but James has a [strong] right and left hand,” Sherman said. “If James lands within three inches, he can cause problems. Six inches, he can break things.”

Toney is also out to prove George Foreman’s motto that “age is just a number.” He is six years younger than Couture and Toney believes his mobility after a dedicated training camp will produce an impressive performance.

“I punch and I knock people out, and I’m going in there knowing what everyone in boxing knows: that everybody has a plan until they get hit. I’m a fan of MMA. But these guys hold, kick, scratch when they’re in trouble,” Toney said.

“They can’t mess with boxing.”

NBA Challenge features 4 legends

By Nelson Beltran (The Philippine Star)

MANILA, Philippines – The NBA Asia Challenge returns to Manila on Aug. 27, bringing in cage legends Gary Payton, Glen Rice, Mitch Richmond and Chris Webber in a follow-up to a similar event held at the Araneta Coliseum last year that featured Dominique Wilkins and company.

Payton, Rice, Richmond and Webber show their wares in an exhibition game that will also showcase NBA D-Leaguers Richie Frahm, Darnell Lazare, Mark Tyndale and Chris McCray.

Local participants are PBA legends Alvin Patrimonio, Ronnie Magsanoc, Vergel Meneses, Atoy Co, Allan Caidic and Benjie Paras and active PBA players Rico Maierhofer, LA Tenorio, Asi Taulava, Arwind Santos, Dondon Hontiveros and Ronald Tubid.

In a departure from last year’s format, this year’s NBA Asia Challenge will be a game pitting two teams with a mixed roster of NBA Legends, D-Leaguers and local stars.

The Wilkins-led NBA side, also featuring Robert Horry, Tim Hardaway and Vladi Divac, as expected, walloped the PBA side, 109-86.

Wilkins, the slam-dunk star of the Atlanta Hawks , led all scorers with 28. The Filipinos were paced by Caidic with 15 on five triples he all made in the opening quarter.

Payton, Rice, Richmond and Webber will come together with the Miami Heat Dancers and Miami Heat mascot Burnie.

Among the D-Leaguers, familiar to Filipino basketball fans is Frahm who had a PBA stint as Talk n Text import.

Payton is easily the biggest name, well remembered for his 13-year stint with the Seattle SuperSonics.

Franchise record holder in points, assists and steals with Seattle, “The Glove” later played with the Milwaukee Bucks, the Los Angeles Lakers, the Boston Celtics and the Miami Heat where he won an NBA championship.

Japanese middleweight Yushin Okami stifled Mark Munoz’s wrestling and landed enough punches to earn two judges’ favor on Sunday and possibly get close to a title shot in the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Okami won a split decision over Munoz in the co-main event of the UFC on Versus 2 card in San Diego. Two judges scored it 29-28 for Okami. One had the same score for Munoz.

Fight statistician Compustrike counted 76 strikes landed of 151 thrown by Okami. Munoz connected on 19 of 45 strikes. Okami landed more power strikes than Munoz, 17 to 13, including 11 for the winner in the final round.

The fight followed the gradual, cautious pace that has characterized several bouts involving Okami, the No. 8 middleweight in the USA TODAY/SB Nation consensus rankings and the highest-rated UFC fighter who has yet to be awarded a shot at the 185-pound belt held by No. 1 Anderson Silva.

Sunday’s bout started cautiously. Okami spent the opening three-and-a-half minutes controlling the center of the ring, walking down his opponent and occasionally throwing jabs or straight punches. Munoz scored a takedown with about 90 seconds remaining in the round, and although he could not keep on the mat long, he spent the next minute clinching with Okami.

Munoz fought more aggressively in the second stanza. He dropped Okami about halfway through the round, and regained his feet quickly when the Japanese fighter responded with a takedown. Munoz tried to keep up the pressure on his opponent standing, although Okami weathered the storm.

Okami asserted himself in the final round by outboxing Munoz, culminating with a right-hand counter that caught Munoz on the chin to send him tumbling to the ground. Munoz’s takedown shots became increasingly telegraphed, and the last 90 seconds saw him simply clinging to his opponent’s leg, while Okami threw short punches to the ribs.

UFC’s Munoz says faith opens doors, he walks through them

Source: http://www.vancouversun.com/sports

UFC middleweight looks back on key moments of young career

There is a passage in the Bible that UFC middleweight Mark Munoz lives his life by.

He knows it by heart and recites it flawlessly.

The verse is in the book of Jeremiah and reads, “I know the plans I have for you, plans to prosper you and not harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.”

“I’m a religious guy,” Munoz said. “I truly believe what’s meant to be is meant to be. I see the doors that open for me, and I always try to walk through them.”

Considering everything that’s gone right for Munoz along his path to becoming a UFC fighter, it’s no wonder he believes a divine power is steering him .

Munoz (8-1) is set to meet veteran fighter Yushin Okami (25-5) in the co-main event of Sunday’s UFC on VERSUS card in San Diego.

It’s a big opportunity for Munoz, who has been fighting professionally since only 2007, but one he feels more than ready for.

In his sophomore year of high school in California, Munoz was devastated when a severe ankle injury took away the first love of his life — football.

His shattered ankle healed well enough to allow him still to wrestle and Munoz attacked his wrestling career with the passion he used to give football.

Eventually, it led to an athletic scholarship at Oklahoma State University.

“Crazy stuff like that has been happening to me my whole career,” Munoz said. “My first love was football. Then I had the ankle injury, which led me to wrestling, which led me to mixed martial arts. Isn’t that crazy?”

Following his collegiate wrestling career, Munoz remained at his alma mater as a coach.

In 2004, he received a job offer at the wrestling program at UC Davis in Northern California.

That same year, another talented wrestler — named Urijah Faber — helped out as an assistant coach at UC Davis. The friendship Munoz began with Faber that year had a huge impact on his decision to eventually start training MMA.

“I saw the flexibility in Urijah’s schedule where he was just planning his days around training and providing for himself,” Munoz said. “I saw what it was doing for him, and he made me a believer.

“He got to train and do what he loves to do and live a healthy life. I thought, ‘Man, that’s exactly what I want to do.'”

As fate would have it, the year Munoz accepted the job at UC Davis and began considering a transition to MMA was the same year Randy Couture took on Vitor Belfort twice for the UFC light heavyweight championship.

In preparation for the second fight, Couture took his camp to Sacramento for a two-week stint.

Munoz ended up being a part of the camp and says his first-ever sparring session was with the MMA legend himself.

“He brought the training camp over for two weeks, and I went to a few of the practices,” Munoz said. “My first sparring session was with Randy Couture.

“I was basically a pure wrestler. They taught me how to jab the day before, so all I did was jab and look for double legs. It was a blast.”

After deciding to quit his stable job as a wrestling coach at UC Davis, a move he describes as the riskiest of his career, Munoz’s rise up the MMA ranks has been a quick one.

He accepted an offer to fight in the WEC after just three professional fights and made his UFC debut shortly thereafter in 2009.

After weathering a time period early in his MMA career in which he says he couldn’t afford to pay for electricity or hot water, Munoz’s career now is flourishing. He also is the co-founder of a 7,000-square-foot training facility, which opened in Lake Forest, Calif. earlier this year.

Accomplished fighters such as Anderson Silva, Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira, Fabricio Werdum and Renato Sobral have become regulars at the complex.

If Munoz gets past the highly regarded Okami on Sunday, it would be his fourth win in a row and likely would place him among the top of the heap in the middleweight division.

As his career continues to envelope bigger opportunities, Munoz says he doesn’t feel any extra pressure. All he can do is come in prepared and see what doors open.

“I’m just trying to walk down the straight-and-narrow path,” Munoz said.

Paul’s Landing With the Knicks Soon Is Unlikely

By HOWARD BECK / http://www.nytimes.com

Video Inside

The murmurs and musings have burgeoned into a fully formed, substantive and fascinating drama: Chris Paul, one of the N.B.A.’s top point guards, wants to be traded out of New Orleans.

He has a plan, a list of preferred destinations and a deadline: opening night of 2010. The Summer of LeBron could soon give way to the Fall of Paul.

As a storyline, Paul’s restlessness could dominate the rest of an already-dizzying N.B.A. off-season. In reality, nothing is likely to happen anytime soon, if at all.

Paul, 25, is under contract for two more seasons and holds an option for the 2012-13 season. He has no way to force a trade, nor can he threaten to sit out games without forfeiting his salary. If he takes his trade demands public, the N.B.A. will fine him.

Because Paul cannot become a free agent until 2012, the Hornets have no urgent reason to deal him until at least next summer. By then, a new collective bargaining agreement could completely change the N.B.A. landscape.

In the meantime, the Hornets’ front office — led by the new general manager Dell Demps and the new coach Monty Williams — should have ample opportunities to reshape the roster and perhaps persuade Paul to stay.

Paul’s discontent has been a poorly kept secret in league circles. But the extent of his escape plan was not clear until CBSSports.com laid out the details Wednesday night. According to the report, which cited unnamed sources, Paul wants to play with another superstar and was emboldened by the newly formed LeBron James-Dwyane Wade-Chris Bosh partnership in Miami.

Paul reportedly wants out immediately and wants to land with the Knicks, the Orlando Magic or the Los Angeles Lakers. Subsequent reports by The Times-Picayune of New Orleans and ESPN listed the Knicks, the Magic, the Portland Trail Blazers and the Dallas Mavericks as the preferred destinations, with the Knicks ranking first, according to ESPN.

The Times-Picayune quoted a person close to Paul saying that no trade demand had been made.

The Knicks have some decent assets — Danilo Gallinari, Anthony Randolph and Eddy Curry’s expiring contract — but probably do not have the right combination to make a direct trade for Paul.

It bears noting that Paul has no power to choose his destination. His contract does not include a no-trade clause (they are rare in the N.B.A.), which means he has no veto power. The Hornets would therefore be free to make the best deal for themselves, irrespective of Paul’s wishes.

It is also unlikely that the Hornets’ new management team would begin its tenure by trading Paul, a perennial All-Star and the face of the franchise. This is Demps’s first job running a team, but he spent five years with the San Antonio Spurs, studying under some of the sharpest executives in the league.

Demps was just hired on Wednesday and has not yet had the chance to sit down with Paul and lay out his vision for the team. That meeting is expected to take place next week.

That Paul is trying to follow James’s blueprint is not entirely surprising. The two are friends and they share the same agent, Leon Rose, and management team, LRMR — the company founded by James and his friend Maverick Carter. Paul signed up with Rose and LRMR earlier this month after severing ties with Octagon.

On Thursday, as news of Paul’s trade desires spread, James weighed in via his Twitter account, saying, “Best of luck to my brother @oneandonlycp3. Do what’s best for You and your family.”

The Hornets won a franchise-record 56 games and made the Western Conference semifinals in 2007-8, Paul’s third season. They looked like a rising power in the West. But they have been regressing ever since, losing in the first round in 2009 and missing the playoffs in 2010 amid budget concerns and roster chaos. Coach Byron Scott, who was close to Paul, was fired last November.

Paul played just 45 games last season because of injury. In his absence, the rookie Darren Collison played like a star, which only made a Paul trade seem more likely.

The Hornets are handicapped by a small market and a poor local economy, and their ownership is in flux, with the owner George Shinn in negotiations to sell majority interest to his partner, Gary Chouest.

Amid the murmurings and the rumors, there is encouragement for the Knicks — even if Paul never comes to New York.

By naming the Knicks, even privately, Paul has validated their rebuilding effort and their hope of becoming a desirable destination for star players. For most of the last decade, the Knicks were regarded as more dysfunctional and hopeless than the Hornets are now.

But the recent signing of Amar’e Stoudemire has changed perceptions and given every N.B.A. star a reason to take notice. In a toast at Carmelo Anthony’s wedding, Paul even joked about the idea of a Stoudemire-Anthony-Paul partnership in New York.

The wedding guests chuckled. It was a far-fetched fantasy. But not as laughable as it once might have seemed.

Who is telling the truth?

 Arum is lying

After the long negotiations between Bob Arum’s Top Rank and Team Mayweather there will still be no fight happening, Oh! i guess you already know that.

Its just  frustrating to know that after all the process and the precautionary agreement it ended up with nothing, really so upsetting. Bob Arum was doing everything he can to make the fight happen including sending the contract terms and speaking very positively of Floyd. ” Bob didn’t want to hurt the big ego of Floyd so he must play nice “

But all these efforts seems useless as it never resulted to an agreement between the two camps. Manny Pacquiao already agreed with the drug testing as requested by Floyd, but Floyd suddenly don’t want to talk about boxing, dont want to even comment or discuss about Pacquiao. What the heck is happening? these are all talk shit!

If that doesnt piss you of, wait until you read this part:

from yahoo.com

Here are the facts,” said Mayweather spokesperson Leonard Ellerbe. “Al Haymon, Richard Schaefer and myself speak to each other on a regular basis and the truth is no negotiations have ever taken place nor was there ever a deal agreed upon by Team Mayweather or Floyd Mayweather to fight Manny Pacquiao on November 13. Either Ross Greenburg or Bob Arum is not telling the truth, but history tells us who is lying.”

Who is telling the truth? I can almost believe that this fight is never going to happen, ever!!!

Bob Arum you better tell us what is happening and why Mayweather is claiming that there were no negotiations?

Smart Gilas Pilipinas needs upgrade – Toroman

Source: Waylon Galvez | mb.com.ph

TAIPEI — After another disappointing campaign, Smart-Gilas mentor Rajko Toroman said that he’s not only eyeing Kelly Williams but is also hoping to add at least two more PBA players to reinforce the national team’s roster for the Guangzhou Asian Games this November.

According to Toroman, the setbacks to World Championship-bound Iran and Lebanon, and to Japan clearly showed the need to upgrade the team’s frontline in order to be competitive in the Asian Games in November in Guangzhou, China.

“I think that we need to pick up little more pieces to make better result,” Toroman said, as Smart-Gilas finished fourth with a 3-3 win-loss card in the 32nd William R. Jones Cup.

“It’s not so good result, but it’s not so bad. I think that we’re close to everybody. Against Iran and Lebanon, I’m very satisfied. It showed that they’re not so far from us. But Japan, we didn’t play good in that game,” Toroman added.

Just like in the past, the mentor from Serbia, who guided Iran to the FIBA-Asia Championship in 2007 that earned a seat in the previous Beijing Olympics, reiterated the need to improve the power forward position.

Toroman mentioned anew the 6-foot-7 Kelly Williams.

However, in case the application for naturalization of American import Marcus Douthit, a 6-foot-10 center, would not be complete in time for the Asian Games, the 55-year-old Toroman said he is thinking of having another PBA player.

“Sonny Thoss or Asi Taulava, two big guys with the size who can help us. But we’ll see first what will happen to Douthit,” Toroman said.

Another PBA player who is in the radar of Toroman is wily point guard Ryan Reyes, who he said can bring consistency, balance and veteran leadership in the backcourt with national team mainstays Mark Barroca and JV Casio.

Also an option at the guard spot, according to Smart-Gilas insiders, is Rain or Shine sophomore playmaker Solomon Mercado.

But to get the PBA players, the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) has to make a request and the PBA board will have to decide on it. It is expected to be trouble-free as the pro league is a stakeholder in the SBP and the association is headed by Talk N Text owner Manny V. Pangilinan.

The goal in the Asian Games, Toroman said, is to reach the semifinals “and hopefully win a medal” although the main target of Smart-Gilas in the FIBA-Asia Championship next year in Beirut, Lebanon, the qualifying event for the 2012 London Olympics.

Smart-Gilas won against lesser teams in the Jones Cup following victories against Chinese Taipei’s University All-Star (83-52), the Australian Crocs (90-64) and Chinese Taipei national team in overtime (96-93), but lost to Iran (68-81), Japan (74-84) and Lebanon (73-62).
