Jomary Torres’ Breakout to Martial Arts Prominence is Defined by Perseverance

Jomary Torres One Championship
It will take some time for undefeated Filipino breakout star Jomary “The Zamboanganian Fighter” Torres to get used to the spotlight after getting her hand raised on two-straight occasions on the global stage of ONE Championship.
While Torres never asked for it, she has become a celebrated figure following back-to-back wins inside the ONE Championship cage in 2017.
Torres shocked the world in August 2017 when the little-known atomweight from the Philippines made her promotional debut against Thai martial arts heroine Rika “Tinydoll” Ishige at ONE: KINGS & CONQUERORS in Macao, China.
While the Thai standout has emerged as one of the most popular talents in Asia’s martial arts scene, Torres stole her thunder on that fateful night when she submitted Ishige in the second round of their exhilarating contest.
Torres stepped on Macanese soil with little fanfare, but by the time the Filipina warrior left the glamorous Cotai Arena, everyone knew who she was.
Three months after she forced Ishige to wave the white flag in her maiden ONE Championship appearance, Tores out-grappled Indonesia’s Nita Dea en route to a unanimous decision victory at ONE: HERO’S DREAM in Yangon, Myanmar.
Despite the fiery performances in her first two outings under the ONE Championship banner, the 21-year old Filipina is actually a shy, soft-spoken girl with sincere eyes.
However, unknown to many, her mild-mannered demeanor hides the adversity she dealt within her childhood.

Behind the sincere eyes

Torres and her older brother were actually left under the care of their grandmother since they were infants.
Deprived of both parents, Torres still grew up to be a well-mannered lady as her grandmother filled the void left by their absence.
Despite not having a stable business as a source of income, her grandmother found ways to provide, such as picking up extra work at a school cafeteria.
“My dad is in Zamboanga City, while my mom is in Basilan,” she detailed. “They each have their own families. Before, there was still anger in my heart because I did not know why they left, and why they broke up, but eventually, that anger disappeared.”
As a result of her circumstances, Torres was regularly picked on by some of her classmates at school, which left her with no other choice but to fight back.
“I was a really quiet girl, and I guess that enticed them to bully me even more,” she revealed. “I told them they should not mess with me because if I fought back, they would be sorry. I punched one and even earned a trip to the principal’s office.”
Although she suffered bullying, the abandonment from her parents, and the lack of any real role models, Torres had a simple dream of becoming a basketball player when she was a young girl.
“I really wanted to play basketball,” she quipped. “Most men play basketball in our country. Since it is like our national sport, I was fascinated by it.”
Having played in fiestas and for her school, Torres thought that she could eventually find a way to make a career out of her hobby, but circumstances would not allow her to pursue that road.
“Instead of letting my grandmother work even more just to get me through college, I decided to stop going to school and find a job to help her out,” she said.

Finding a second chance in the city

Out of desperation, Torres did not hesitate to take a job in Taguig, Metro Manila, where she worked as a nanny.
During her time as a nanny, Torres met Ruel Catalan, who frequently trained at a gym near the school where the child that she took care of was studying.
While waiting for the child to finish school, Torres swung by the gym to watch the action firsthand.
For three years, the usually-active Torres was contained in a job where she could not feed her competitive spirit and could only envy them from the sidelines.
Watching people get fit, all while satisfying that craving for competition through martial arts enticed her.
In 2015, Ruel introduced Torres to his older brother, Rene Catalan, multiple-time Wushu world champion and head coach of Catalan Fighting System.
“Coach Rene invited me and gave me an offer to consider. I tried training, and I have been there ever since,” she recalled. “I was a bit fat before. I only got fit here.”
After receiving an offer to join the team, Torres did not think twice to leave her job as a nanny and trained to become a full-time martial artist.
With no martial arts background, it came as a shock for her when she was immediately booked for a match.
As homage to her hometown, Torres took the nickname of “The Zamboanginian Fighter” as her alias when she had her professional debut in August 2016 at a local show.
Torres pulled off the unanimous decision victory, and from then on, the Catalans knew that they had a potential star on their hands.
“I trained for two months, and was surprised when I was told by my coach that I would be competing,” Torres stated. “I took on the challenge so that I could experience a real match, and thankfully, I won.”

Dancing under the bright lights

In merely three years, Torres has emerged as a promising talent and has compiled an undefeated professional record of 3-0.
Torres credits all of her success to her mentor Rene Catalan, who equipped her with the necessary tools to flourish inside the cage.
“Although he may be a bit strict sometimes, I know that it is for my own good,” she expressed. “He is the one who introduced me to this world of martial arts, and I really admire how he manages to do what he does.”
On Friday, 26 January, Torres will once again be strutting her wares under the bright lights as she takes on fellow Filipina April Osenio in a three-round atomweight clash on the undercard of ONE: GLOBAL SUPERHEROES in Manila, Philippines.
If there is anyone who knows about the pressure of following up back-to-back victories, it would be Osenio as the Team Lakay athlete rebounded from a 2015 loss with back-to-back wins against the likes of Natalie Gonzales Hills and Malaysian star Ann Osman in 2016.
However, Osenio could not capitalize on her momentum as she stumbled with a string of defeats to former atomweight world title contender Jenny Huang and most recently to current ONE Women’s Strawweight World Champion “The Panda” Xiong Jing Nan.
Even with the recent setbacks, Osenio is a two-time Philippines’ national Wushu champion, who has competed against world-class talents at the top of both the women’s atomweight and strawweight divisions.
Torres acknowledges the capabilities of her compatriot, sharing that she is training diligently in every aspect of the game.
“I am still not certain how I will go about with the match. She will have to wait and be surprised with what I am going to do in the cage,” she teased.
Torres is singularly focused on the task at hand, but she is not short on motivation as “The Zamboanganian Fighter” is driven by making life better for her loved ones and the people who have continuously supported her along the way.
“I want to give back to my gym, and the people who love and support me. I am competing for my country. Everything I do is for all of them, and as long as I can do this, I will keep doing this,” she ended.

4 Pinoy Heroes Battle for Glory at ONE: Hero’s Dream

Pinoy MMA warriors Burn Soriano, Eugene Toquero, Jeremy Miado and Jomary Torres look to make a statement in the cage as they head to Yangon, Myanmar for their journey to ONE: Hero’s Dream, Friday, November 3, 2017 at Thuwunna Indoor Stadium.

ONE Championship 63: Hero’s Dream pits Aung La N Sang vs Alain Ngalani battle in an open weight super bout. His middleweight strap will not be defended, the Burmese champion has agreed to take on Muay Thai heavyweight world champion Alain Ngalani. The main card will also feature Pinoy favorite Burn Soriano. In his last fight, Soriano suffered a tough loss against Malaysia’s Saiful Merican. Soriano completely dominated Merican in the early first round only to find himself outworked before the round ends. “Hitman” looks to get back to his winning ways.

Thanks Ms. Apple. February 10 was a day to learn. It has become my biggest motivator as well. No excuses.

Soriano told Powcast nine months ago. His Alliance training camp with coach George Castro all completed now. Soriano is ready to fight.

Eugene Toquero is another Pinoy fan-favorite. “Boy Hawi” will try to stop his three-fight losing streak as he takes on chinese Ma Hao Bin. Toquero fell three-straight to quality opponents such as ONE flyweight champion Adriano Moraes, compatriot and no. 1 flyweight Danny Kingad and Indonesian standout Stefer Rahardian. Toquero has a lot of hair rising work to do to get back in the win column.

I have made other adjustments. I train longer and harder now. I don’t want to be complacent because I am not getting any younger. This is a huge organization with a lot of very good martial artists from all over the world.

This time, l will make sure that my hand is raised as the winner. I am not going home with a loss on 3rd of November, he said.

The debut in April 2016 at ONE: Kings of Destiny didn’t go exactly as planned. Jeremy Miado loses split decision to Robin Catalan. These two are decent on the ground. Only the one with better strategy can defeat another. That was just the beginning! Eager to return to action, “The Jaguar” will be competing against Thailand’s Pongsiri Misatit with an undefeated record of 8-0. If he lose the first battle doesn’t mean he will lose the second time. Miado was a former strawweight champion at Blaze FC. The hunger is still there from Miado and if he can produce a great performance then he will have his first ONE victory.

On the contrary, Jomary Torres shocked the world on her debut about the upset victory over Thailand standout Rika Ishige at ONE: Kings and Conquerors. The Zamboanginian fighter forced Tiny Doll to tap out to end her undefeated run! That’s Jomary Torres’ rise to prominence in the atomweight division. Making a name for herself in her ONE Championship debut we can expect to see more of Jomary. We see Torres building on that success in her return to the cage against Nita Dea.

Jomary Torres Determined to Keep Winning Momentum Going at ONE: HERO’S DREAM

Jomary Torres in One FC
Jomary “The Zamboanginian Fighter” Torres shocked the world this past August when the little-known atomweight from the Philippines made her promotional debut against rising Thai martial arts superstar Rika “Tinydoll” Ishige at ONE: KINGS & CONQUERORS in Macao, China.
While the Thai standout has emerged as one of the most popular talents in Asia’s mixed martial arts scene, Torres stole the spotlight on that fateful night when she submitted Ishige in the second round of their exhilarating contest.
Torres stepped on Macanese soil with little fanfare, but by the time the Filipina warrior left the glamorous Cotai Arena, everyone knew who she was.
Everything that Ishige threw at Torres, she withstood as the proud product of the Catalan Fighting Systems countered the Thai’s strikes and even successfully defended several submissions.
However, the most telling moment was when Torres caught Ishige’s body kick in round two, where her confidence skyrocketed as the Filipina held onto the leg and landed blow after blow.
Seeing a golden opportunity to get the finish, Torres swarmed with ferocious ground-and-pound blows as Ishige tried to cover up before finally using the position to lock in a match-ending rear-naked choke.
“After the match, I was happy, but I did not know what to do. Do I celebrate or do I cry? I was really surprised because I did not expect the outcome. It was the first stoppage win of my career,” Torres recalled.
The submission victory over Ishige shocked everyone in attendance, including Torres and her teammates.
“They asked me where that choke move came from because it surprised them,” she revealed. “I told them I surprised myself, too!”
After her remarkable conquest of Ishige last August, Torres moves onto her next assignment as she faces Indonesian kickboxer Nita Dea on the undercard of ONE: HERO’S DREAM in Yangon, Myanmar on 3 November.
The 21-year-old Zamboanga del Norte, Philippines sees her three-round encounter against Dea as an opportunity to extend her success inside the ONE Championship cage.
“This is my chance to establish my first winning streak in ONE Championship. It’s not impossible. That’s why I am exerting a tremendous amount of effort in training. I want to keep on winning,” she said.
While the 26-year-old Indonesian may not have much experience inside the cage, Dea is actually a very accomplished martial artist.
Dea is a national wrestling champion and a two-time national Wushu Sanda champion, who also a well-versed kickboxer with a 12-4 record in the discipline.
“From what I saw, I think she (Nita Dea) is a striker. She does not seem to hit the ground all that much. I am prepared to go toe-to-toe or take the match to the ground, wherever I think I have the advantage,” Torres stated.
Although she is riding a huge wave of momentum coming into her second bout as a ONE Championship competitor, Torres is confident that she will have her hand raised in triumph once again.
“I felt really nervous in my first bout. But when I saw my opponent was right in front of me and remembered all the people who supported me, I relaxed and slowly put my focus on winning the match,” she shared.
“I want to win again because I want to give back to my gym and the people who love and support me. I am competing for my country. Everything I do is for all of them and as long as I can do this, I will keep doing this,” Torres ended.

ONE FC: Jomary Torres Happy to Compete Alongside Kelly, Pacio in Macao

Filipina fighter Jomary Torres sees it as a privilege to be fighting side-by-side with fellow homegrown martial artists on the undercard of ONE: KINGS & CONQUERORS in Macao. China on Saturday, August 5.
Torres, who squares off with rising Thai superstar Rika “Tinydoll” Ishige on the aforementioned card, relishes the opportunity to represent the Philippines alongside combat veteran Eric Kelly as well as one-time flyweight world title challenger Joshua “The Passion” Pacio.
“I am very happy because all of us are representing the Philippines and not against each other. This is good. I hope all of us will win on fight night,” she said.
Kelly locks horns with former ONE Lightweight World Champion Kotetsu “No Face” Boku, while Pacio looks to get another shot at Yoshitaka Naito’s gold-plated strap as he crosses paths with seasoned Japanese stalwart Hayato Suzuki in a three-round strawweight encounter.
“We get to represent the country. It’s really an honor and a privilege. We are one team in Macao. We are all hoping for a clean sweep,” Torres stated.
Torres, who holds a fledgling professional mixed martial arts (MMA) record of 1-0, is not expecting to be other competitor’s footstool to move up in the rankings as she intends to walk out with the victory in her ONE Championship debut.
“It’s my first time to compete in ONE Championship. I am honored and blessed to be in this top-notch organization, which is widely considered as the frontrunner of MMA in the region. Of course, I am aiming to get a big win. I’ve worked hard just to make it here. I won’t waste this opportunity,” she claimed.
Torres is a talented Filipino prospect who trains out of the Wushu-savvy Catalan Fighting System gym.
Moreover, Torres had her lone match in August 2016 at a local Filipino MMA event, where she took a convincing unanimous decision triumph.
However, Torres is fully aware that having her hand raised against a well-rounded MMA competitor like Ishige will be a tough task.
“I am prepared for this fight. Every fight is a challenge for me. But I welcome all challenges. Bring it on,” she expressed.
ONE: KINGS & CONQUERORS is set to take place at the glamorous Cotai Arena of The Venetian Macao.

Jomary Torres Eyes Huge Win Over Thai Martial Arts Superstar in ONE FC Debut

Filipino newcomer Jomary Torres sets her sights on a colossal goal in her ONE Championship debut as she aims to make a statement against up-and-coming Thai martial arts superstar Rika “Tinydoll” Ishige.
Both ladies are set to square off against each other on the undercard of ONE: KINGS & CONQUERORS, which takes place at the glamorous Cotai Arena of The Venetian Macao in Macao, China on 5 August.
Torres, who holds a fledgling professional mixed martial arts (MMA) record of 1-0, is not expecting to be other competitor’s footstool to move up in the rankings as she intends to walk out with the victory in her first appearance as a ONE Championship athlete.
Ishige is a certified eye candy that can grace on the cover of a top fashion magazine, sashay down the catwalk with the latest apparel, or endorse high-end beauty products in a television advertisement.
But Ishige is more than a pretty face because deep within, she is an authentic martial artist.
The 28-year-old beauty is of Thai and Japanese heritage and comes from a family of martial artists. Her late father was a judo practitioner, and her older sister who is now a medical doctor trained in Taekwondo.
Heavily influenced by her father, Ishige began her martial arts training at the age of nine with Aikido, Karate and Taekwondo.
Ishige successfully won her first two assignments as a pro this year, stopping Audreylaura Boniface via first-round technical knockout this past March before notching a first-round submission win over Nita Dea last May.
“We are keenly studying my opponent for this fight. She is a true martial artist. It’s part of her lifestyle. It’s in her blood,” Torres said of Ishige.
“I know what she is capable of doing inside the cage. She has a good Muay Thai base. Aside from that, she also has a good ground game. But I am coming into this bout very prepared. I am not giving myself any room for error,” she added.
Even though Ishige seems to have the upper hand in some departments of the vast fight game, Torres has no qualms when it comes to trading kicks and punches with her highly-touted Thai foe.
“My foundation is Wushu. I have no problem if she wants to fight standing up. I am already expecting that she will trade strikes with me. I can strike very hard too,” she cautioned.
Torres and Ishige are relatively inexperienced with almost matching records, but the Filipina striker believes that her key to victory lies wholly within herself.
“I will work hard on myself. I like to concentrate my training on myself. It does not matter about the opponent. The important thing for success is self-confidence. The key to self-confidence is preparation, and I am well prepared for this fight. If I have good preparation, I can fight anybody,” she ended.
