Devastated Burn Soriano was Dealing with Stomach Flu Prior to the Fight

Burn Soriano’s fight didn’t go the way we wanted at ONE Championship 52: Throne of Tigers in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on February 10. It was a great performance in the early round by “Hitman” against “The Vampire” Saiful Merican. The fight started with punches landing on both and led to Merican dropping after a takedown. Soriano kept an active guard throwing up his legs for possible submission. Soriano took Merican’s back attempted a rear-naked choke. Merican rolled out of it but Soriano also rolled in side control into a kimura attempt. Merican escaped again that allowed him to stand up and put the pressure on Soriano. The Malaysian took top control letting loose with ground and pound and a flurry of punches until the round ends.
Soriano didn’t stand up after the bell rang for the second round. Referee waved off and Merican was declared as the winner. Soriano had multiple chance to choke him out but couldn’t. The Filipino gassed from working on finishing Merican.
The bantamweight revealed, following his loss to Saiful Mercan, that prior to the fight he was dealing with stomachaches or the runs and vommitting he thinks he got from eating street food, which affected his cardio a lot.

Thank you for the support. Sorry I didn’t get the W. Gassed out talaga. The day itself I was puking and having a diarrhea because of the street food we ate. Anyways, bawi tayo next time.
Burn Soriano has spoken.

He can’t begin to tell the Filipinos and his fans how disappointed he was. February 10 was a day to learn. It has become his biggest motivator as well. No excuses. He promised to come back harder than ever and to the daily grind.
We are going to see Burn Soriano ONE day starting up his camp for his next fight training alongside ONE heavyweight champion Brandon Vera and coach George Castro.

Thanks Ms. Apple. Sobrang nanghinayang din ako eh. Lessoned learned talaga. I’ll be spending my next training camp with Brandon Vera na.

Burn Soriano incorporates into Brandon Vera’s promise to bring the world-famous Alliance MMA gym to Manila to actually make it work.

The Pinoy warrior wants to fight again ASAP. We all want a win, but winning feels much better when you do the things necessary to get better.
It’s how the old saying go, you will learn a lot from the battles that you lose than from those which you win.
Meanwhile, who else would like to see “Hitman” added to the ONE Championship Manila card on April 21?

Saiful Merican on facing Filipino fighter again: ‘Not personal, just business’

Malaysian standout Saiful “The Vampire” Merican will face an exciting Filipino fighter in his much-awaited return to the ONE Championship on 10 February as he is set to lock horns with Burn “The Hitman” Soriano in a three-round bantamweight clash.
The bout will be one of the featured attractions at ONE: THRONE OF TIGERS, which takes place at the 12,000-seater Stadium Negara in Merican’s hometown of Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
Merican, who makes his bantamweight debut against Soriano, is coming off a first-round knockout loss to Team Lakay’s Geje Eustaquio in January 2016.
Although he has the chance to settle the score with a Filipino combatant in his comeback bout, to the 28-year-old Malaysian stalwart was quick to shot down the notion that he is out to avenge his setback to Eustaquio with a win over Soriano.
“It’s not personal. This is purely business against Burn Soriano. I hold no grudges win or lose. At the end of the day, it is a sport,” Merican said.
According to Merican, his top priority is reinserting his name into the winner’s column again. However, he knows that it will not be an easy task.
“I’ve been out for over a year. I’m so eager to bounce back and get this win. But I know this will not be easy because I have a tough foe in front of me,” he stated.
Soriano is coming off a highlight-reel victory over Indonesia’s Mario Sitya Wirawan, scoring a lightning quick 15-second spinning backfist knockout.
With a professional mixed martial arts record of 3-2 which includes two wins by submission and one by knockout, Soriano looks to continue his winning ways inside the ONE Championship cage.
“Soriano is well-rounded. He can fight standing up. He can also fight on the ground. That’s why I am doing some extra work in both aspects. I won’t let him have the leverage whether it’s in striking or grappling,” Merican said of his marquee match-up against Soriano.

Although both men possess superb striking backgrounds, Merican believes that he still has the upper hand in the stand-up department.
“I know he will come to fight and strike with me, but I am confident that I will prevail if he wants to stand and bang. My Muay Thai background is tried and tested,” he asserted.
Merican prides himself in being an exhilarating competitor, who is willing to please the crowd by always seeking the highlight-reel finish.
“For sure, it’s going to be a good fight. It will not go into the three judges’ hands for a decision. It will have a decisive finish,” he claimed.

Burn Soriano targets another big win in upcoming bout

After scoring a highlight-reel finish in his last bout, Filipino homegrown talent Burn “The Hitman” Soriano looks for another scintillating performance as he is set to have his first scheduled match under the ONE Championship banner in 2017.
Soriano will be squaring off with Malaysian standout Saiful “The Vampire” Merican on the undercard of ONE: THRONE OF TIGERS, which takes place at the 12,000-seater Stadium Negara in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 10 February.
The 30-year-old native of Narvacan, Ilocos Sur eyes a follow-up to his 15-second knockout win over Mario Satya Wirawan last August.
Soriano delivered a well-executed spinning backfist that instantly turned the lights out on Wirawan. His knockout victory was ranked as one of the jaw-dropping wins in 2016 by ONE Championship.
“I am a fighter who always looks for the finish. As much as possible, I want to give the fans what they want to see. They didn’t buy a ticket to see a boring fight. They came for an action-packed fight with an amazing conclusion,” Soriano said.
“In my upcoming fight, my fans should expect that I will have the same mentality. I will look for that finish,” he added.
Holding a mixed martial arts record of 3-2, Soriano has not gone the distance yet in his nearly seven-year prizefighting career. He owns two submission triumphs and one knockout win.
According to Soriano, his three-round encounter with Merican will have no shortage of firepower as he expects his Malaysian foe to stand and bang with him.
Merican, 24, is an explosive striker who starts bouts fast, always looking to end matters early. Moreover, he has had incredible success inside the ONE Championship cage with his fan-friendly fighting style.
“I know he also likes to strike and have the fight in a stand-up exchange. This is a favorable match-up for me because I love to trade and bang,” Soriano stated.
Aiming to continue his winning ways inside the ONE Championship cage, Soriano believes that win over Merican will push him into the upper echelon of the bantamweight division.
“I’m training hard for this fight. If I get the W, I know I will be in a better position because I can get to fight the contenders at the top of the food chain,” he said.

Burn "The Hitman" Soriano Is Going To Hit The Cage Again In A Hard Hitting Bout On February 10

ONE Championship has some great fights added officially to its ONE CHAMPIONSHIP 52: THRONE OF TIGERS lineup, including the return of Pinoy pride bantamweight prospect Burn “The Hitman” Soriano.

The Filipino warrior from Ilocos Sur will look to keep his confidence high and win his second in a row at 135 when he faces ‘The Vampire” Saiful Merican to improve his 3-2 record. The two are set to clash at Stadium Negara, Kuala Lumpur on February 10.

It was all eyes on “Burn/Hitman” when he used the now his famous spinning back fist on Mario Satya Wirawan who holds the fastest KO record (6 seconds) to finish at the :15 mark of Round 1 and earned his first win in ONE Championship. The big knock out victory took place in Jakarta, Indonesia at ONE Championship 46: Titles and Titans on August 27, 2016. It was also the Second Top-rated insane Knockout of 2016 in the promotion.

“The fight with Mario Wirawan was just a warm up fight for me since I lost to his countryman Sonoto who failed to make weight at the time of our fight. I told myself that I needed a solid redemption, and that became my motivation which led to my spectacular finish.”

His ONE Championship debut against another Indonesian fighter Sunoto Peringkat last April 2016 didn’t go as planned. That however didn’t stop Soriano from trying and working hard when he stepped back in the cage to win his next battle.

His coaches and team mates are pushing him
everyday and shaping him into a better fighter.

Bernard has been hitting the gym hard as he prepares for fight number 3 at ONE. The guy was posting photos and videos on Instagram: burn_hitman and Facebook: /bernard.soriano.980 showing some of the hard work he have been putting in.  He is such a driven athlete. We have seen more from Soriano in terms of ground game. But the man also proved that not only he has one trick. It’s deadly if he keeps using his range while striking. All 3 of Soriano’s pro MMA wins have been stoppages whether it submission or knockout.

Soriano is looking forward to represent Hitman MMA and fly the Philippine flag high again. He is ready for the challenge!

Before punches being thrown in the cage next month, he answered my questions thrown at him first.

What do you think your edge/s over more experienced fighter (@ONE) Saiful Merican?

“I’ve been in this sport for a long time. I’ve had five kickboxing fights, winning all of them by KO. I believe that I have a better mma team. We have a lot good strikers and grapplers, including a BJJ black belt, and we even have a partially blind fighter who became a local champion and is now on the way to becoming a One FC fighter. This is the team I’ve been training with.”

Your spectacular KO win against Mario Wirawan for sure gave you a lot of confidence, have you ever thought of one day you will also contend for the belt?

“Getting the belt has always been the goal of every fighter. I don’t think much about it right now as I’m working my way up, but let’s see if I can continue my dominance in this competition someday.”

What can you say about Eduard Folayang’s taking home the lightweight belt? and potentially facing off with Team Lakay’s Kevin Belingon in the future?

“I’m proud of Edward not just because he’s our kababayan, but because he really worked hard for it. As we all know, these fighters from Baguio are very hard-working and very dedicated to their craft. Facing Kevin Belingon is one of my dream fights as well, so if we ever meet along the way, that would give me the opportunity to become a step closer to my the One Championship gold.”

Who among fighter/s both local and international you look up to and why?

“Brandon Vera, he’s been there a long time, a champion and a true legend. BJ Penn who’s my idol and one of the reasons I started MMA myself. My good friend Gab Dy, a PXC fighter, he’s an inspiration to me. He’s very hard-working and talented.”

Who was the toughest opponent for you?

“Honorio Banario. He’s bigger than me, and my cardio was not as good as it is today which led to my defeat.”

If you weren’t a fighter, what would you be today?

“I’m actually fighting purely for passion and fun, but I’m a full-time businessman.”

Who among local fighter/s do you see has a potential to belong at ONE Championship?

“I’m not being biased, but in our MMA team, Hitman MMA, there’s a lot of deserving fighters. Take Jiar Castillo, for example, who is the current AFC Champion.”

Aside from MMA, what other sports you’re into?

“Beerpong”

Your message to your fans, to MMA fans in the Philippines

“Continue to dream because that’s where it all starts, as Les Brown said, “You don’t have to be great to start something, but you have to start something to be great.”

Malaysian superstar Ev “E.T.” Ting takes on lightweight veteran Kamal Shalorus at the top of the card. Also in action are Roy Doliguez who is also a pride of the Philippines, Alex Silva, Agilan Thani, Jeff Huang, Ann Osman, Vy Srey Khouch, Herbert Burns, Movlid Khaibulaev, Keanu Subba, Ahmed Mujtaba, Tiffany Teo, Priscilla Hertati Lumban Gaol, Muhammad Aiman and Eduardo Novaes.
