Juan Manuel Lopez-Rafael Marquez title fight postponed

Source: Skysports

Next month’s world feartherweight title fight between Juan Manuel Lopez and Rafael Marquez has been postponed after Marquez suffered a hand injury during training.

The fight had been scheduled for September 18 at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Promoters are hoping to reschedule the contest within four weeks of the original date.
Lopez (29-0) will be making the third defence of the WBO title he won with an impressive seventh-round knockout of Steven Luevano in January. Marquez (39-5) is coming off a victory in the third fight of his trilogy with Israel Vazquez.

“It’s a big disappointment because this was such a big fight and an exciting fight for boxing,” Shaw said. “I would think Showtime will move it to late October or November. Marquez is going to stay in training and just work his left hand and run and do his exercises.” – Gary Shaw

Concepcion failed to follow Pacquiao’s instructions

If there was anybody who was disappointed with Bernabe Concepcion’s second round knockout at the hands of WBO featherweight champion Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez in a two round firefight in Puerto Rico, it has to be pound-for-pound king and “Fighter of the Decade” Manny Pacquiao.

After entering the dressing room of former two-time world light flyweight champion Brian Viloria before he entered the ring for his ten round comeback fight against Omar Soto in Solar Sports “Boxing at the Bay” series at the Ynares Sports Center late Saturday, Pacquiao spoke to insidesports.ph, Standard Today and Viva Sports about the Puerto Rico blockbuster fight card which was telecast on Sunday morning by the giant broadcast network ABS-CBN over its pre-eminent Channel 2.

Pacquiao said Concepcion had “a big chance to win the fight because he is stronger than Juanma Lopez although Lopez is faster but because of his power Concepcion has a good chance of winning.”

Pacquiao said he had taught Concepcion “many things before this fight happened. I told him what he had to do to beat Lopez. Do everything I tell you in training. You must have quickness in movement of your feet as well as you head and improve your defense as well as positioning for throwing punches.”

He said he had told the young challenger to give himself some room to punch because his punches are too short. This is what you need to develop.” Pacquiao said he did what he told him in training and I told him if he implements what I taught him he could win handily.”

In the end it was clear that Concepcion didn’t follow Pacquiao’s instructions and appeared bent on trying to win the fight with one lucky haymaker but except for the dying seconds of the opening round when he dropped Lopez with a looping left hook Concepcion was wide open and was picked apart by the champion in suffering a 2nd round knockout.

Juan Manuel Lopez knocks Bernabe Concepcion out in two

At the Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico, WBO featherweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez (28-0, 26KOs) stopped Bernabe Concepcion (30-3-1, 17KOs) in the second round.

Lopez staggered Concepcion in the opening minute. Concepcion tried to exchange shots but Juanma unloaded some counters to send the Filipino fighter down. He beat the count, but Juanma began to punish him against in the ropes. In the final five seconds, Concepcion landed a hard counter left hand bomb to send Juanma down as the entire crowd was shocked at what they were watching. Lopez beat the count and the round came to close.

At the start of the second round, Lopez landed a hard straight right to send Concepcion down for the second time in the contest. Near the end of the round, Lopez put his punches together and sent Concepcion crashing down for the third time. He tried to get up to his feet but he was barely able to stand. The referee stopped the contest.

Round by Round Update: (via boxing.fanhouse.com)

Round 1: The crowd already was chanting “JuanMa,” and both fighters wore white trunks trimmed in pink including pink gloves. Lopez nailed Concepcion with an early left hook, the second of which wobbled Concepcion and sent him careening with his back to the ropes. Concepcion came back with a right, but WENT DOWN from a clubbing right hand to the back of his head. Concepcion, down for the first time in his career, rose, but was in trouble following another left, and a series of unanswered blows. Referee Luis Pabon stepped in, temporarily, to break up the fighters. But when the fight resumed, Lopez was on Concepcion again. Suddenly, however, Concepcion DROPS LOPEZ to the canvas with a hard, left hook with 17 seconds left. BOTH FIGHTERS WERE DOWN IN THE FIRST ROUND.

Round 2: Seconds into the second round, Concepcion goes down to his butt, immediately, from a straight left hand. He rises, but goes down again — only it is ruled that he slipped. Lopez goes back to jabbing, and, with 41 seconds left in the round, gets nailed with a right hand. Along the ropes, he is pounded with a followup right, staggers across the ring and goes down in a neutral corner. Pabon is over him, reaches the count of five, and, as Concepcion stumbles and rolls to all fours, the referee WAVES AN END TO THE BOUT.

IT’S OVER. SECOND-ROUND KO FOR LOPEZ.

*******

Undercard Update:

Super bantamweight Jonathan Oquendo (19-2, 12KOs) knocked out Eden Sonsona (21-6) in the ninth round of their WBO eliminator. Oquendo sets himself up for a possible fight with champion and countryman Wilfredo Vazquez Jr.

Concepcion primed for Juanma

ABS-CBN NEWS

The main event of “The Challenge,” meantime, features Puerto Rican superstar Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez and Filipino Bernabe “The Real Deal” Concepcion.

Lopez, World Boxing Organization (WBO) featherweight champion, is unbeaten with 28 wins (with 25 KOs) while Concepcion has 28 wins (with 15 KOs), 3 losses and 1 draw.

Just like Marquez, Concepcion is determined to claim the world title at stake in his fight.

“I am honored to fighting a great champion like Juan Manuel Lopez in his home, but I have come to win and take the title back to the Philippines. This is the most important fight of my career and I have prepared like never before for this fight,” he said.

While he is favored to extend his winning streak, Lopez said he will not underestimate the abilities of Concepcion who is said to be the underdog.

“If should be a great fight because we both come to fight and I know how strong and tough Bernabe Concepcion is. I will not underestimate him. I worked very hard to get to this level and I will never take anything for granted,” assured the Puerto Rican.

Another Filipino, Eden Sonsona (21-5, 7 KOs), is included in the fight card of “The Challenge.” He will fight Jonathan Oquendo of Puerto Rico (18-2, with 11 KOs).

“The Challenge” will be shown on ABS-CBN Channel 2 on Sunday beginning 10 a.m. It will be replayed on Studio 23 at 7 p.m. — With a report from FightNews.com

Juanma: He isn’t Pacquiao

Photos by Tom Casino/SHOWTIME

“Like Mexican fighters, Filipinos are also brave,” stated WBO featherweight champion Juan Manuel Lopez in advance of Saturday’s SHOWTIME-televised title defense against Bernabe Concepcion at the Coliseo Jose Miguel Agrelot in San Juan, Puerto Rico. “I have respect for Concepcion, but we’ll resolve the matter in the ring. He throws punches from all angles Pacquiao-style, but Concepcion isn’t Pacquiao.”

It was mentioned that Manny Pacquiao has given Concepcion some advice for the fight and that the Filipino plans to spoil Lopez’ planned fight with Rafael Marquez. Juanma replied that only he and Concepcion will be in the ring. “But if Manny Pacquiao steps into the ring, I’ll get Tito Trinidad and we’ll be even.”

He added, “We’re focused on Concepcion. There’s talk about a fight with Marquez in September, but that’s not on my mind right now. First I have to defeat Comcepcion and then my promoters can talk to Bob Arum and Fernando Beltran to finalize a fight with Rafael Marquez.”

In the co-feature, WBA interim super flyweight champion Nonito “The Filipino Flash’ Donaire (23-1, 15 KOs) meets Mexican puncher Hernan “Tyson” Marquez (27-1, 20 KOs).

“All Mexican fighters are brave, so I don’t underestimate them. Marquez is coming off a loss in at flyweight and that makes him more dangerous, but we’re prepared for everything. I also have power in my fists and I’m ready to defend my title,” said Donaire.

He added that after beating Marquez “I want to face Montiel, Arce and Darchinyan, we want big names, big fights and we’re more than ready.”

Marquez commented “I know I’m facing a great champion, but I have the desire, hunger and the ability to take the belt to Mexico. Like all Mexican boxers, I’ll die if necessary, but I will be crowned on Saturday.”

If the boxers stay on course this Saturday night in Puerto Rico should a night of fireworks as all four combatants in the two main fights are willing to put on a show any time they step into the ring and even if the champions Juan Manuel “Juanma” Lopez and Nonito “The Flilipino Flash” Donaire are favorite the challenger are looking to spoil their plans.

“If should be a great fight because we both come to fight and I know how strong and tough Bernabe Concepcion is. I will not underestimate him. I worked very hard to get to this level and I will never take anything for granted,” Lopez, said yesterday during the final press conference in Puerto Rico.

Lopez will defend his WBO featherweight championship against Bernabe Concepcion this Saturday night (Sunday morning in Manila) in the Coliseo of Puerto Rico and Donaire will defended his WBA Interim super flyweight crown against Hernan “Tyson” Marquez in a big doubleheader to be telecast live by Showtime in the United States.

“I am honored to fighting a great champion like Juan Manuel Lopez in his home, but I have come to win and take the title back to the Philippines. This is the most important fight of my career and I have prepared like never before for this fight,” Concepcion said.

Donaire who is a two-time world champion is a big favorite over Marquez.

“I know that Marquez is coming off a loss and that makes him very dangerous as he will try to get back on the winning track. He is a strong guy and I will have to fight him smart. I expect him to come at me and I will be ready for him,” Donaire said.

Marquez a 21 year old prospect wil be fighting for a world title for the first time in his career.

“This opportunity came to me from nowhere and I took it, because I know I can win this fight. Donaire is a great boxer, but I believe that I not only that I can compete with him but defeat him as I will do everything in my power to take the belt home with me on Saturday night,” Marquez, said.
