Geje Eustaquio Sacrifices Christmas Family Time in Pursuit of Decisive Victory

Geje Eustaquio
Sacrifice means to give up something cherished in order to get something even more valuable in the future.
This concept also applies to the constantly-evolving world of martial arts as the path to becoming a celebrated world champion is paved with much sacrifice.
To set foot on the pinnacle of success, all competitors must go through blood, sweat and tears in training.
Furthermore, martial artists have to be separated from their families for months to dedicate their lives to the craft that they seek to perfect.
Filipino striking ace Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio had to undergo the same process as he had to give up numerous special occasions with his family and friends to fully focus on his training.
“The life of a professional martial artist is difficult, but I understand that in order to be the best, we have to make certain sacrifices. Spending time away from friends and family to train isn’t easy,” he said.
Eustaquio is slated to face former titleholder Kairat “The Kazakh” Akhmetov for the interim ONE Flyweight World Championship in the co-main event of ONE: GLOBAL SUPERHEROES, which takes place at the 20,000-seater SM Mall of Asia Arena in Manila, Philippines on 26 January.
For his highly-anticipated second encounter against Akhmetov at ONE: GLOBAL SUPERHEROES, Eustaquio did not have the chance to fully savor Christmas and the rest of the Yuletide season.
According to Eustaquio, the most painful sacrifice is not being able to celebrate the most wonderful time of the year with his beloved family, but he knows that there is a reward waiting for him.
“It’s part of being a professional martial artist. A lot of sacrifices have been made. Training in December was one of them. I had to give up Christmas celebrations for this fight. I missed a lot of family activities such as birthdays and reunions,” he stated.
“If I want to consider myself as a championship-quality athlete in this sport, I have to make that sacrifice. In the end, I will reap the fruits of my labor. Hard work cannot be denied forever,” Eustaquio added.
On 26 January, the 28-year-old Baguio City native aims to turn his sacrifices into gold as he is looking to exact some revenge and claim a world title in front of his treasured countrymen.
The headlining flyweight clash between Eustaquio and Akhmetov at ONE: GLOBAL SUPERHEROES serves as a rematch of their grueling collision four months earlier, where the Kazakh dynamo defeated the Filipino standout by way of razor-thin split decision.
“It was a learning experience for me, the first time I met Kairat,” Eustaquio recalled. “I knew going into the match that it would be one of the biggest challenges of my career, given that he is a former world champion. Honestly, I was a little flustered. I thought I could have pushed the pace more, and maybe forced him to defend my strikes.”
Eustaquio admitted that there were lapses on his part when he first fought Akhmetov in September of last year.
“I lost focus of the game plan and allowed myself to operate at Akhmetov’s pace instead of dictating the action on the feet. I also could have had better takedown defense. I would have loved to have won, but it is what it is,” he explained.
With five rounds to duel and an interim ONE Flyweight World Championship title on the line, Eustaquio vows to bring more intensity to the cage when he crosses paths with Akhmetov at ONE: GLOBAL SUPERHEROES.
“Kairat is a tricky opponent. After three rounds with him, I have gotten to know him a little bit better. I am able to understand what makes him a great martial artist,” he mentioned.
Eustaquio is known for his fluid Wushu striking game with the distinct ability to remain calm under duress.
Moreover, Eustaquio has faced some of the most talented martial artists in the world, with notable triumphs over Kentaro Watanabe, Gianni Subba, Anatpong Bunrad and reigning ONE Strawweight World Champion Alex Silva.
The 5-foot-5 Team Lakay veteran even previously challenged current ONE Flyweight World Champion Adriano “Mikinho” Moraes for the inaugural title in September 2014, losing via guillotine choke in the second round.
Eustaquio receives the second world title opportunity of his professional career, and a victory over his Kazakhstani rival would line up a future showdown with Moraes for the undisputed title of best flyweight in the world.
As he shares the ONE Championship cage with Akhmetov once more, Eustaquio bared that he working on correct the mistakes he committed in their initial meeting in order to pick up the victory.
Eustaquio believes that a superb takedown defense should prove handy against a wrestler of Akhmetov’s caliber.
“One of the aspects of my game I am working very hard on is my takedown defense,” he revealed. “Every day, we drill very hard in training. We all work to improve our ground game and takedown defense, so we can better showcase our Wushu. After every bout, I aim to get better, win or lose. Every bout is a learning experience.”
Despite falling on the wrong side of a split decision to Akhmetov in September 2017, Eustaquio remains optimistic that he will walk out of the SM Mall of Asia Arena with his hand raised and the interim ONE Flyweight World Championship belt around his waist.
“He he has a big heart. Kazakhstani martial artists have big hearts, and lots of pride. They do not go down easily, and are very tough. I am expecting another difficult bout. That is why I am preparing very well. A victory over Kairat would land me a rematch against Adriano. I believe I have what it takes to become the undisputed ONE Flyweight World Champion,” he ended.

Kairat Akhmetov Scores Split Decision Victory Over Geje Eustaquio

The largest sports media property in Asian history, ONE Championship™ (ONE), once again electrified Jakarta, Indonesia with another evening of world-class martial arts action. The packed Jakarta Convention Center played host to ONE: TOTAL VICTORY, which showcased the world’s best martial artists inside the ONE Championship cage. In the main event, former ONE Flyweight World Champion Kairat Akhmetov scored a close three-round split decision victory over the Philippines’s Geje Eustaquio.

In the main event of ONE: TOTAL VICTORY, former ONE Flyweight World Champion Kairat Akhmetov scored a huge triumph over top flyweight contender Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio of the Philippines, coming away with a closely-contested split decision victory. Akhmetov showcased his overwhelming Greco Roman wrestling chops to consistently bring Eustaquio to the canvas, controlling the action on the ground. Eustaquio would land his usual crisp, clean combinations throughout the contest, but it wasn’t enough to earn him the win as Akhmetov’s grappling proved too much to overcome. In the end, Akhmetov emerged the victor on two of the three judges’ scorecards to earn him the split decision.

Hometown hero, the undefeated Stefer Rahardian continued his winning ways inside the ONE Championship cage, finishing Cambodian opponent Sim Bunsrun in just a little over a minute into the first round. Rahardian, who was just recently awarded his Brazilian jiu-jitsu brown belt, jumped on Bunsrun’s back as soon as he recognized the opening and slithered his way into a deep rear naked choke. Bunsrun tried valiantly to fight off the submission, but it was securely in place and the Cambodian had no choice but to tap out.

In the fastest finish in ONE Championship heavyweight division history, Alain “The Panther” Ngalani obliterated former ONE world title challenger Hideki “Shrek” Sekine in just 11 seconds, scoring an emphatic win in front of a roaring Jakarta Convention Center crowd. As Sekine charged recklessly towards Ngalani at the sound of the opening bell, Ngalani stepped back and uncorked a right hand counter right on the jaw that dumped Sekine to the ground, ending the bout in abrupt fashion.

In a battle of former ONE world title challengers, former professional boxer Roy Doliguez of the Philippines stopped Yago Bryan of Brazil to win by third round technical knockout. It was gruelling contest from start to finish, as both competitors were very evenly matched. Doliguez, operating behind his world-class boxing stance, would keep Bryan on the outside with fast kicks and punch combinations. Although Bryan would land the cleaner, stronger punches throughout the bout, Doliguez soon began to find his range late into the contest. A straight left hand down the middle felled Bryan in the third round from which he was unable to recover.

Malaysia’s Hisyam Samsudin showcased incredible grit and toughness as he overcame a furious start from Indonesia’s Jeremy Meciaz to win by technical knockout. Meciaz stormed out of the gates wanting to engage as he chased Samsudin all across the cage. Samsudin would however weather the early onslaught, and deliver some big blows of his own to force referee Yuji Shimada to call a halt to the contest in the very first round.

Filipino karate practitioner Ramon Gonzales showcased a new grappling dimension to his overall game, finishing Chinese wrestler Liu De Li Ge Ri Hu via arm triangle choke submission. After dominating the first round with his striking, Gonzales was able to take Liu De Li to the mat near the halfway point of the second, where he secured side control and swiftly locked in the choke moments after.

An exciting matchup ensued between local strawweight competitor Adrian “The Papua Badboy” Matheis and Cambodian Khun Khmer warrior Phat Soda. Matheis, who was emotional at the end of the bout, pulled off the impressive win by latching onto a rear-naked choke just past the midway point of the very first round. With no escape, Soda had no choice but to tap out, awarding Matheis the submission victory.

In the second preliminary bout of the evening, Indonesian martial artists Riski Umar and Adi Nugroho sent tremors of excitement throughout the Jakarta Convention Center with a spirited display of striking. As both warriors exchanged heavy blows at the center of the cage, it was Umar who came away with the knockout victory after a thunderous body shot landed, incapacitating Nugroho who slumped to the canvas and was unable to get back up.

Kicking off the action at ONE: TOTAL VICTORY was a catchweight contest between Thai Rithy and Jerome S. Paye. Although Paye wisely looked to take matters to the ground where he would try to neutralize Rithy’s striking advantage, the Cambodian was just not going to be contained. Rithy landed five solid right hands on Paye’s jaw to start the second round, turning the lights out on Paye before he hit the mat.

Geje Eustaquio Motivated to Become the Best Flyweight in ONE Championship

Geje Eustaquio considers himself as a fortunate individual, but he has always possessed the drive and talent to achieve all of his lofty goals.
The 28-year-old Baguio City native has capitalized on every opportunity that has come his way in his professional mixed martial arts career.
As a result, Eustaquio has a Master’s degree and is a perennial contender in ONE Championship’s talented flyweight division.
Training out of the legendary Team Lakay, Eustaquio made his professional debut in February 2011. He competed on three local shows, winning two of the contests, before signing with ONE Championship.
Eustaquio made his promotional debut a year later against Alex Silva at ONE: BATTLE OF HEROES in February 2012, and it was a night he will never forget.
“My first ONE Championship fight is the most memorable to me,” he shared. “It is the biggest victory of my career because it was the first time I won internationally.”
Ever since he became part of ONE Championship’s burgeoning roster of world-class athletes, Eustaquio positioned himself as well-respected veteran from Mark Sangiao’s Team Lakay camp as he holds a respectable 9-5 record, with two wins coming by knockout and another two by submission.
Eustaquio continued to excel in the promotion’s flyweight division, even vying for the inaugural ONE Flyweight World Championship at ONE: RISE OF THE KINGDOM back in September 2014.
Known by the moniker “Gravity,” Eustaquio has won three of his last five matches since yielding to Moraes, including a first-round knockout victory over Malaysian stalwart Saiful “The Vampire” Merican in January 2016 and a split decision win over Thai rival Anatpong Bunrad in their rematch last May.
Eustaquio has the opportunity to cement his status as one of the best flyweights in the world today as he is set to face former flyweight kingpin Kairat “The Kazakh” Akhmetov in the main event of ONE: TOTAL VICTORY in Jakarta, Indonesia on Saturday, 16 September.
Although a tall order is in front of him, Eustaquio remains optimistic that he will have his hand raised in triumph as he is driven by his desire to become the best competitor in the organization’s 61.2-kilogram weight class.
“Nothing is easy. A person has to go through hardship to become successful. I know it will be hard, but I am willing to dig deep and get that victory. In order to be a winner, you have to endure. I am here to endure all the hardships because I want to be the best,” he said.
Eustaquio has improved steadily in all facets of the game, especially in the grappling department.
Although Eustaquio has re-created himself in the last three years, he gives a lot of the credit to his teammates and, of course, Sangiao.
“He is the best coach we have,” he stated. “He is a brother, a father, and a mentor. He always looks at things for the long run and treats his team as a whole team. I was inspired by Mark Sangiao. The hardship of life drives me to move forward and be the best in this sport.”
If Eustaquio plays his cards right against Akhmetov, a title shot could be on his crosshairs.
“I want this win. I want to have a remarkable winning result, and then I want to move forward onto that flyweight belt. I am back in the main event. My next goal is to be back in the title hunt,” he stressed.
The three-round flyweight encounter between Eustaquio and Akhmetov has serious title implications.
Akhmetov, who just recently lost his title to Moraes via unanimous decision in a championship unification clash this past August, still has the bitter taste of defeat in his mouth following what was the first loss of his career.
The 29-year-old Kazakh combatant would want nothing more than to get back in the cage with Moraes to regain the ONE Flyweight World Championship.
However, Eustaquio stands firmly in his way as the Filipino mixed martial artist restarted his flyweight campaign with the win over Bunrad in May.
With two hungry martial artists wanting to prove their worth and stake their relevance in the division, the winner of the marquee match-up between Eustaquio and Akhmetov might be next in line to dance with Moraes for the gold-plated strap.
“I am here for the challenge. I am not backing down. Do not miss the chance to witness when the good becomes better and the better becomes the best,” Eustaquio declared. “Bring it on!”

Geje Eustaquio Endures the Journey to Success, Rain or Shine

One of Team Lakay standout Geje “Gravity” Eustaquio will return to the ONE Championship cage on September 16 at Jakarta Convention Center in Indonesia where the Pinoy Pride will look to increase Kairat Ahkmetov’s 1 loss record. The former champion will serve no doubt as one of his toughest tests. A win could position the 28-year-old Baguio City native in line for another crack at Adriano Moraes.
Most recently, the flyweight from Baguio City, Philippines defeated Anatpong Bunrad of Thailand by way of split decision last May at ONE Championship: Dynasty of Heroes. It was their rematch two years after they have fought in Manila at ONE Championship: Valor of Champions. Eustaquio competed as well for the vacant flyweight title back in 2014 against the current champion in the division Adriano Moraes from Brazil.
“This is a huge bout against a former world champion, it is very important to me. Thank you ONE Championship for the opportunity. I will showcase my best skills in this bout and take home the win for the Philippines. [Kairat] Akhmetov is a world-class martial artist and I can’t wait to test my skills against him. When the cage door closes, it’s time for battle. I will make sure to come well prepared,” Eustaquio said.
The Filipino will come up against former champion from Kazakhstan Kairat Ahkmetov. “The Kazakh” has built an impressive 23-1 record. Of 24 fights to date, he was only defeated by Adriano Moraes last August at ONE Championship: Kings and Conquerors.
“I am excited to get back in the cage and compete. Defeat is part of this game, the important thing is to come back better. The body is ready, the mind is strong, and the spirit is willing. [Geje] Eustaquio is one of the best competitors in the division and a victory over him will mean a lot. I have one goal, and that is to get back my title. I will take care of anyone who stands in my way,” Ahkmetov said.

The preparation for the Fight Night
in Jakarta continues!

Ahkmetov is accomplished on the ground and Eustaquio got a better skillset on standup. Team Lakay warriors train hard and train smart. They work to don’t just be good at one thing, but be good at everything.

“My ground game is coming. My wrestling is coming. I believe if you’re going to compare it with others, it’s not very low in terms of performance in wrestling or grappling,” Eustaquio stated. “Honestly speaking, I am not that far behind.”

Coach Mark Sangiao and Geje Eustaquio don’t let the rain or heat of the sun stop them from reaching their goals. Rain or shine, camps are happening. So let us see if there would be a different game plan going in. We all know anything can happen on MMA.  The two is set for the main event at ONE Championship: Total Victory. It’s going to be a big night of fights! Stay tuned!
