16 Years Ago – A Dominant Force was named Most Valuable Player of the NBA Finals after putting up an unbelievable performance for the whole series

(Artwork by Sean Curate)

Shaquille O’Neal was named unanimous Most Valuable Player of NBA Finals 2000 following the Lakers’ 116-111 Game 6 victory, receiving all seven votes from a national media panel.
O’Neal averaged 38 points, 16.7 rebounds and 2.67 blocks in the six-game Finals series. He became just the third person to sweep MVP honors for the season, capturing the All-Star Game MVP, which he shared with San Antonio’s Power Forward/Center Tim Duncan, NBA MVP and NBA Finals MVP awards.

THROWBACK THURSDAY: This Day in the NBA History

Shaq dunks on Mutombo

This Day June 16(Philippines) and June 15 (America) the Los Angeles Lakers defeated the Philadelphia 76ers 108-96 in Game 5 of NBA Finals 2001, completing the most dominating playoff run in NBA history. The Lakers won the series 4 games to 1. The Lakers posted a 15-1 record and .937 winning percentage in NBA Playoffs 2001, both NBA records. Shaquille O’Neal was named NBA Finals MVP for the second consecutive season, joining Michael Jordan and Hakeem Olajuwon as the only players to win consecutive NBA Finals MVP awards.

Lets take a flash back on some highlights in the game 5 of 2001 NBA Finals:

Anthony Davis is UNREAL! 59 pts out of 24-34 shooting. AMAZING!

2 handed Jam by Davis

Davis has once again surprised everyone and this performance reminded me of a young KG blossoming into the league as one of the top players in his era. Davis showed a wide array of moves from jump shot, to step back, 3 points, layup and breath taking slum dunks. Davis is clearly becoming the franchise player at a young age, it was just a shame that they were not able to find a trading partner for Ryan Anderson who isn’t at all a bad fit alongside AD but certainly they would want someone who could create for him self like Nic Batum or Kent Bazemore which they could get at the start of the next season.

This is a proof that Davis will make noise for the years to come. Here is the breakdown of this monstrous performance by AD:

59 points 24-34 shooting
20 rebounds
4 assists
2 block shots

With that stat Davis joined Shaquille O’ Neal and Karl Malone as the only 3 players in NBA history to record a 50-20 performance in this modern era. This performance gave the Pelicans a much needed victory to boost their morale against Detroit Pistons with a score of 100-106.

Shaq gives his all-time starting five

Former NBA superstar big man Shaquille O’Neal was asked about his all-time starting five. His answer:

“Bill Russell won 11 championships. Charles Barkley is my guy, but I like Karl Malone. Then there’s the guy who made me who I am — Dr. J [Julius Erving]. I’ve got Michael [Jordan] at the two. Then, I’m going to go with the big guard with Magic Johnson at the one.”

Shaq tells 15-year old son to pattern his game to Pelican forward Anthony Davis and not him

In just three seasons, Anthony Davis has already established himself as one of the best power forwards in the NBA. Davis was selected to the All-NBA First Team last season, is a two-time All-Star. At 22 years old, New Orleans Pelicans forward Anthony Davis is just scratching the surface of the player he could be but that hasn’t stopped Shaquille O’Neal from already telling his 15-year-old son Shareef to pattern his game after the Pelicans forward.

Instead of pushing him to pattern his game after him, O’Neal said he’s told his son to learn the game by watching power forward Anthony Davis, the New Orleans Pelicans’ transcedent star who finished fifth in the league’s MVP voting last season.

“I told him to watch Anthony because he’s probably going to be the same height and have the same type of build, not skinny, but long.” said O’Neal.

Shaq retired as a basketball player in the NBA and just recently I have heard rumors that He will be trying Mixed Martial Arts. With no offer on the table yet, Shaq is willing to get it on inside the Octagon. I don’t think as a fighter of course not, if it happen then Ill be watching it for sure. Not that it will be a competitive match but for sure it will be hilarious. Maybe Shaq Fu against Brock Lesnar, should be a good comeback fight for Lesnar. Hahaha!

Is Shaquille O’Neal sick?

Shaquille O’Neal is in danger? The big man who dominated the NBA with pure power is now under observation because of sleep apnea.
According to news he had been suffering of this disorder for quite some time now and with out proper treatment he could end up in the bench?!
Hmmp… this might be one the reason why he is not that good anymore, well aside from his age of course.
What is Sleep Apnea?

What is Sleep Apnea?

Characterized by Abnormal pauses in breathing or instances of abnormally low breathing, during sleep. Each pause in breathing, called an apnea, can last from a few seconds to minutes, and may occur 5 to 30 times or more an hour.

Sleep apnea can have numerous effects on cognition in the waking state. Those with Sleep apnea have daytime fatigue, impaired reaction time and vision problems which contribute to sleep-deprived driving. Other effects include difficulty with information processing, judgment, and short term memory. These effects can severely interrupt daytime cognition. Behavioral effects also accompany sleep apnea. Behaviors such as decreased vigilance and motivation as well as moodiness and aggressiveness impact both social and occupational status. Many behavioral as well as cognitive effects of sleep apnea can be very dangerous in many occupations especially manual labor and machine operating.

Shaq says Cleveland was selfish, unlike Boston

Thumbnail image for shaq_o’neal.jpgIt’s been one of those questions about this season’s Boston Celtics: Will the selfless chemistry that defined this team remain the same with Shaquille O’Neal and Jermaine O’Neal and a full year of Nate Robinson?

Probably, the leadership at the top of the big three will set the tone. And in case you were worried, Shaq is down with it. He’s said before he’s ready to be a role player and he reiterated it to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.
He also said that part of the problem in Cleveland was the lack of selflessness.
“I like that (the Celtics) play together and nobody really worries about shots,” O’Neal said. “When I was with Cleveland, guys who couldn’t even play were worried about shots. Why was Mo (Williams) taking 15 shots, and I’m only taking four? If LeBron takes 20 shots, that’s cool.
Just a little more evidence that in the push to build a team around LeBron in Cleveland they never really passed chemistry.
