Strikeforce Results – Fedor and Arlovski both lost

Fedor Emelianenko suffered his second straight loss in a row to Antonio “Bigfoot” Silva in the opening round of the Strikeforce World Grand Prix tonight. The MMA legend noted after the loss that he will likely retire from the sport. Sergei Kharitonov also advanced in the tournament, handing former UFC heavyweight champion Andrei Arlovkski his fourth loss in a row in the process.

Cro Cop should hang them up

source: http://www.torontosun.com/sports

This weekend, two PRIDE Fighting Championships veterans proved why they need to retire ASAP.

Kazushi (The Gracie Hunter) Sakuraba was steamrolled by Jason (Mayhem) Miller en route to tapping out for the first time in his career at DREAM 16 in Nagoya, Japan. Then, less than 24 hours later, Mirko (Cro Cop) Filipovic was knocked out by Frank Mir at UFC 119 in Indianapolis, Indiana.

Though some have been calling for Sakuraba (26-14-1, 1 NC) to hang them up for years now, Filipovic (27-8-2, 1 NC) had found some mild success as of late with wins over Anthony (The Hippo) Perosh and Pat (HD) Barry.

However, in one of the worst main events in recent UFC history, Filipovic was completely gun-shy against a tentative Mir (14-5). He looked nothing like the brutal, aggressive fighter who tore through the PRIDE 2006 open-weight grand prix.

Fans in Indianapolis were instead treated to someone who was simply trying not to lose, instead of fighting to win. Then, after 14 minutes of two guys either staring at each other or hugging against the fence, Filipovic was out cold courtesy of a knee from Mir.

Rather than unleash a verbal tirade over the fight, UFC president Dana White voiced his displeasure by refusing to award Mir “Knockout of the Night” honours. This speaks volumes considering that there were no other knockouts on the card.

In the build-up to UFC 119, Filipovic said this could be his last fight. But if he still felt good afterward, he would continue competing in MMA. However, at this point he’s hurting his legacy more than his opponents.

If Filipovic had retired when PRIDE folded he would have been remembered as one of the greatest fighters in the history of the sport. Despite what has transpired in his career since, he’s still deserving of that distinction. He has achieved more in both MMA and kickboxing than most could ever hope to.

There’s nothing left to fight for. The killer instinct is gone and his body will likely slow down over the next few years. Filipovic has even admitted that it’s tough to wake up and train hard every day. That’s a dangerous sign in a sport where motivation is everything and so many young fighters would kill to earn a fraction of his paycheque.

As a fan, Filipovic has always been one of my favourite fighters. If he decides to continue fighting, I will cheer him every time he steps out there, but it’s getting harder and harder to watch him do it.

TERRIBLE JUDGING

If it wasn’t for the stinker of a main event, UFC 119 would probably be remembered for the incompetent judging.

Both Evan Dunham and Antonio Rogerio (Minotoro) Nogueira were robbed last night.

Dunham (11-1) got off to a rough start against former UFC lightweight champion Sean (The Muscle Shark) Sherk.

Sherk (33-4-1) managed to secure a takedown in the first and busted Dunham open with a vicious elbow. However, as they entered the second round, Dunham began stuffing the shots and utilizing his reach advantage to outstrike Sherk. He also threatened with a number of chokes. The third round was all Dunham as he battered Sherk on the feet.

Despite clearly winning the second and third rounds, two judges inexplicably awarded the fight to Sherk. The decision was met with a loud chorus of boos from the fans in attendance.

Now, here’s an SAT question for you.

Fighter A has just won the first of three rounds against Fighter B. However, in the last 10 minutes, Fighter B is continually outstriking Fighter A, who is having trouble with Fighter B’s reach advantage and superior technique.

Fighter A is a former NCAA Division I wrestler, yet he’s failing on most of his takedown attempts. The ones he does land amount to nothing because Fighter B neutralizes him on the ground is able to get right back to his feet.

Who wins the fight?

If you said Fighter B for his superior striking in a bout where the grappling amounted to nothing in the last two rounds, give yourself a cookie. If you said Fighter A, please slam your hand in a car door.

Nogueira (19-4) landed more significant shots in the last two rounds of the UFC 119 co-main event against Ryan (Darth) Bader. He should have been awarded the bout 29-28, but the three incompetent judges gave every round to Bader (12-0).

This is especially infuriating since Bader did very little in the third round and was getting tagged repeatedly. The second round was closer, but unless a fighter can deal some punishment on the ground or threaten with submissions, basic takedowns are not effective offence.

If Bader was successful in taking the fight to the mat, Nogueira was just as effective for getting back to his feet with a Division I wrestler on top of him.

Since the grappling made up a small portion of the last two rounds – and most of those exchanges saw Bader fail on his takedown attempts – the judges should be looking at the striking. Simply put, Nogueira beat him on the feet.

Edgar dominates Penn, Couture destroys Toney at UFC 118

Source: By Dave Deibert | http://www.vancouversun.com/
Ultimate Fighting Championship legend Randy Couture could have a future as a fortune teller.
The UFC Hall-of-Famer told the world how his co-main event at UFC 118 versus future boxing Hall-of-Famer James Toney would go: takedown, beat him down. It took all of three minutes, 19 seconds at TD Garden in Boston Saturday night for Couture to make his prediction come true. The former UFC light heavyweight and heavyweight champ wasted no time ruining the mixed-martial-arts debut of the former boxing world champion, choking him out just past the midway point of the first round in front of a raucous, pro-MMA crowd.

“This is exactly what I trained to do,” said Couture (19-10).
He said he had been working on the finishing move — an arm triangle — for well over a year. If the finish looked familiar to fight fans, there’s a reason why: it was the exact choke current UFC heavyweight champ Brock Lesnar used to beat challenger Shane Carwin in July — a finish Lesnar developed after spending time training with Couture.
Following the match, Couture paid respect to Toney, the trash-talking boxer who backed up his words and got into the octagon. Toney told anyone who would listen — including UFC Dana White, who granted Toney’s wish to fight in UFC — that he had the power to knock out Couture no matter what discipline of fighting the match took place under. At the same time, Couture said the nine months Toney spent training “is real short order to pick up everything you need to know.”
Couture needed just 15 seconds to get a feel for Toney’s stance before shooting for his legs and using his Olympic-caliber wrestling to take him to the mat. Couture spent two minutes ground-and-pounding Toney before looking for the submission. Toney fought off the first choke attempt but once Couture locked it in, Toney had no choice but to tap.
It capped a fantastic August for Couture, who co-starred in the Hollywood blockbuster The Expendables — which has spent two weeks atop the North American box office.
Said Couture, with a grin: “I’ve had a hell of a month.”
Edgar beats Penn, retains lightweight title
Frankie Edgar heard the critics call his first win over BJ Penn a fluke, a bad judges decision, pure luck. With a masterful performance at UFC 118, he proved them all wrong.
For the second time in four months, Edgar defeated the man considered by many — including Edgar himself — to be the greatest lightweight in the history of MMA. After winning a hotly-contested decision at UFC 112 in April, Edgar was much more dominant at UFC 118 in Boston, leaving no doubt there’s a new king in the division.
“I just wanted to make that point,” said Edgar (13-1).
“I feel like I could walk on water.”
All three judges scored Saturday’s match 50-45. After putting on the greatest performance of his life in April to beat Penn once, Edgar topped himself in Boston.
“He really brought the best out of me,” said Edgar.

Much like the first fight, Penn (15-7-1) had little answer for Edgar’s speed and movement. Edgar’s confidence was at an all-time high coming into the match and it appeared to grow with each passing moment at UFC 118. Though Penn had a few moments of control in the fourth and fifth rounds, virtually the entire 25-minute match was dominated by Edgar.
All three judges scored the match 50-45.
“Frankie fought a great fight. He’s the man. I got nothing bad to say. I fought him twice. He walked away with the decision twice,” said a visibly disappointed Penn.
“I’ve really got to go back and think about things.”
In other pay-per-view matches at UFC 118:
– Demian Maia (13-2) took his first step back up the middleweight ladder, easily defeating Mario Miranda (12-2) via unanimous decision in Maia’s first match since losing a title shot versus Anderson Silva in April.
All three judges scored the match 30-27.
– Gray Maynard (10-0, 1 NC) earned his first shot at the UFC lightweight title, at the same time denying a third crack at the belt for Boston native Kenny Florian (14-5). Maynard used his wrestling to dominate the final 11 minutes of the bout, winning a unanimous decision over a heartbroken Florian to determine the division’s No. 1 contender.
Two judges scored the match 30-27, while the third had it 29-28.
“Feeling good, man. Really glad I finally get to the spot where I get the chance at the belt,” said Maynard.
– Nate Diaz (13-5) continued to rise up the welterweight ranks, putting on a clinic against hometown favourite Marcus Davis (17-7). Diaz turned the right side of Davis’s face into a scene from a horror movie before eventually choking the Maine native out at 4:02 of the third round.
“I feel good,” said Diaz. “Marcus Davis is a hell of a fighter.”
In preliminary matches at UFC 118:
– Getting a superstar reaction from the crowd, Joe Lauzon (18-5) put on a superstar performance in the ring. He needed just 2:01 to lock in an armbar and submit Gabe Ruediger (17-6) in a lightweight affair.
– Nik Lentz (21-3-2) was awarded a unanimous decision over Andre Winner (12-4-1) in a lightweight bout. Two judges scored the match 30-27 while the third had it 29-28.
– Putting an end to a three-match losing streak, Dan Miller (12-4, 1 NC) choked out John Salter (5-2) at 1:53 of the second round in their middleweight bout.
– Overcoming a massive first-round cut, Greg Soto (8-1) earned a unanimous decision over Nick Osipczak (5-3) in a welterweight contest. All three judges scored the match 29-28.
– Mike Pierce (11-3) dominated from start to finish his welterweight bout against Amilcar Alves (11-2), finally using a kimura to earn the submission win at 3:11 of the third round.

James Toney in MMA, Kimbo Slice in boxing, will either succeed?

Source:Scott Heritage |http://www.examiner.com/
James Toney and Kimbo Slice are two fighters who find themselves in similar positions, both attempting to enter a new sport at an advanced age and if you listen to the bookmakers both appearing to have little chance of success.

After winning multiple titles in boxing in a career spanning 22 years, and with the big fights now drying up, Toney enters the UFC octagon for the first time tonight against Randy Couture, a 13 year veteran of mixed martial arts very few are expecting him to beat.
Although the fight is widely being billed as the latest installment of the rather played out concept of boxing vs. mixed martial arts, in reality the outcome says very little about either sport.

Toney began his boxing career at 160lbs back in 1988, ahead of his fight with Couture tonight he weighed in at 237lbs, heavier even than his most recent boxing appearances. So the idea that Toney is really crossing over with a genuine mind to succeeding in the long term in MMA is a little hard to believe. More likely he’s looking forward to the 7 figure paycheck he’s reportedly receiving from the UFC more than anything else.
The public obsession with seeing how well a top level boxer would do in MMA is still alive and well though it seems, despite the fact that the question has been answered numerous times in the past with various outcomes.
Generally speaking most boxers are either taken down and submitted, or kicked into submission in an MMA fight. Every now and then one will land a big punch and win a bout ala Ray Mercer vs. Tim Sylvia, but they are in the minority. So Toney’s chances tonight are slim to say the least. He could certainly knock Couture out if he catches him, but where he has one way to win, Couture has several, and knows how to defend against Toney’s only weapon
On the other side of the coin we have Kimbo Slice, a 37 year old Florida native who achieved notoriety through a series of online bare knuckle fights which were uploaded to Youtube. The basic premise being that he would travel to various neighborhoods and take on the resident tough guy, usually in a back yard or parking lot.
After achieving millions of hits and building a huge following in the process, Slice decided that he would be better served competing in mixed martial arts, and began his career under the now defunct EliteXC banner. After a brief spell in the UFC, Slice sported a record of 4-2, and seemingly didn’t have as much of the drawing power as he entered the sport with.
Slice’s next move after crashing out of MMA then?
Become a boxer of course!
While no official opponent has yet been found for Slice, aka Kevin Ferguson, it isn’t easy to think of many credible heavyweights he would stand much of a chance against, even in today’s rather shallow division. He might be matched up with easy fights for the short term, but with age not on his side he will need to progress quickly if he really wants to achieve anything in the sport.
Realistically, Slice left MMA for several reasons. Firstly he was getting too old at 37, and doesn’t have the gas tank to keep up with younger more athletic opponents. Which is especially problematic given that he is on the smaller end of the heavyweight scale, but remains too big to compete at light heavyweight. Also he has had several problems with his knees, including arthiritis, meaning many aspects of daily mixed martial arts training were troublesome. Not only that, but his chin was called into question after he was knocked out by a natural light heavyweight during his last EliteXC appearance.
None of these issues will really be any different in a boxing ring, and outside of being paired up only with journeymen Slice’s chances in boxing are probably even slimmer than Toney’s are in the UFC.

Bud Johnson, Pittsburgh: “Toney is barely understandable, he should have given up boxing ten years ago, let alone starting MMA instead. He’s getting beaten down quick”
James Greening, Philly: “Kimbo isn’t getting in with anyone decent in boxing but Toney is getting thrown to the wolves in the UFC, Kimbo lasts longer in boxing than Toney does in MMA”.

MMA/Streetfighter Kimbo Slice to Try Pro Boxing Next

Source: http://www.nowboxing.com

The YouTube street fighting sensation. Kevin “Kimbo Slice” Ferguson known for this backyard brawls in the Miami beach area, has gotten back together with his original promoter, Gary Shaw, and is looking forward to make the leap into professional boxing sometime this year.

Kimbo left Gary Shaw to sign on as a contestant on the MMA reality show TUF (The Ultimate Fighter), Slice was a ratings hit, bringing in some of the highest ratings in the history of the show. Kimbo didn’t fair to well in the UFC, mainly due to the fact he had an existing knee injury that made an easy target for leg kicks. Kimbo was released from the UFC after his stoppage loss to Matt Mitrione at UFC 113 on May 8, 2010.

Boxing promoter, Gary Shaw, believed in Kimbo’s marketability along with female MMA fighter and future movie star, Gina Carano, that he pushed the two as the faces of EliteXC (the now defunct MMA organization that was replaced by Strikeforce on Showtime and CBS) by heavily promoting the two every chance he got when he was an executive with the company.

Shaw basically jump started the meteoric rise of Slice and Carano. Shaw no longer involved with MMA since the EliteXC went under, is back promoting boxing full-time, and wants to bring Kimbo’s name value to the world of boxing.

Shaw told ESPN that he was confident he would have a boxing deal soon with Kimbo Slice after weeks of negotiations. Shaw is one of the top boxing promoters in the game, having promoted top caliber fighters such as; Manny Pacquiao, Sugar Shane Mosley, Diego Corrales, Winky Wright and currently Alfredo Angulo, Rafael Marquez, Vic Darchinyan, Timothy Bradley, and Chad Dawson to name a few.

Kimbo is looking forward to the transition to boxing, but at 36-years-old, many critics believe he is too old to make a serious run into title contention and get a title shot at the Klitschko brothers or David Haye. But his name alone and the curiosity of how he will do in his first boxing match will have viewers tuning in whenever Kimbo’s pro boxing debut is. Slice may never be the next American boxing champion, but he can become the next Eric “Butterbean” Esch, who made a name for himself fighting 4-round fights on undercards of Bob Arum Pay-Per-Views.

Dana White: Chael Sonnen rematch up next for UFC champ Anderson Silva

by MMAjunkie.com

Despite his loss at UFC 117, Chael Sonnen has earned an immediate rematch with UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva.

UFC president Dana White, who’s busy with a final media blitz for this week’s UFC 118 event in Boston, today confirmed the plans while on ESPN’s “SportsCenter,” though a date has not been determined for the rematch.

Sonnen dominated four and a half rounds of the Aug. 7 fight before Silva scored a come-from-behind triangle-choke victory in the fifth and final round.

As MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) reported immediately after the Oakland, Calif. fight, White acknowledged fans’ desire for the rematch, but initially he was noncommittal about Silva (27-4 MMA, 12-0 UFC) vs. Sonnen (25-11-1 MMA, 4-4 UFC) II.

“It’s definitely a rematch I think people are going to want to see,” White said after the event “Looking at Twitter, everybody is saying, ‘Rematch. Rematch.’ We’ll see what happens. Vitor is waiting to fight right now, too. We could do the rematch with Chael, but we’ll see what happens. We’ll see how it goes.”

White’s initial reluctance may have been in part due to Vitor Belfort, who was slated to fight Silva until an injury opened the door for Sonnen. Belfort is expected to fight in November, but he’s no longer fighting for a title.

Sonnen, of course, heavily hyped the UFC 117 bout with an endless stream of trash-talk. Many fans snickered at Sonnen’s bold predictions of victory – Silva, after all, had soundly defeated the 11 previous opponents the UFC put before him – but according to CompuStrike, Sonnen scored 51 strikes to Silva’s two in the first round. And through three rounds, he had opened a 218-to-11 gap.

Sonnen continued the lopsided beatdown until the fifth round, when Silva capitalized on one of his opponent’s few mistakes and secured a fight-ending triangle choke at the 3:10 mark of the final round.

The rematch is now expected to take place later this year or in early 2011.

"Strikeforce: Houston" main-card recap: Feijao, Souza claim gold; Lashley stopped

by John Morgan and Dann Stupp | http://mmajunkie.com
HOUSTON – For two rounds, former Strikeforce light heavyweight champion Muhammed “King Mo” Lawal looked like he could get away with his lackadaisical hand position.

For 10 minutes, Lawal appeared as if he could defend his title even while unable to work the fight to the ground.

Then Rafael “Feijao” Cavalcante proved him wrong.

Down two rounds to none after Lawal was just a little faster, just a little crisper, Cavalcante appeared to be fading as time wore on. But the daringly low hands of Lawal finally provided the opening Cavalcante needed. Unable to pull his head back enough to avoid the blow, Lawal tasted a firm right hand on the chin.

Then it all fell apart.

Wobbled by the blow, Lawal returned to his roots and shot in from the outside. But as he had throughout the fight, Cavalcante shucked off the attempt and delivered a powerful knee in the clinch. Lawal staggered back, and Cavalcante refused to let him off the hook.

A wild right hand clipped Lawal’s chin, and the belt holder was flat on his back.

Lawal showed heart in working back to his feet and instinctually looking for the takedown, but Cavalcante simply pinned himself against the cage and delivered a stunning array of elbows to the head. Lawal refused to drop, but his body swayed and rocked, and referee “Big” John McCarthy wisely called off the fight 74 seconds into the third round.

In the end, Lawal ended up with the striking advantage over his opponent with a tally of 139-93, but it was the ones that counted that fell to Cavalcante.

With the win, Cavalcante (10-2 MMA, 2-1 SF) claimed his first-ever world title. Meanwhile, Lawal (7-1 MMA, 2-1 SF) suffered his first-ever career defeat.

With Strikeforce’s vacant middleweight championship on the line, Brazilian submission ace Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza did what he doesn’t do best – strike his way to victory.

Fellow challenger Tim Kennedy provided a stern challenge, and according to CompuStrike, he actually won the striking battle 207-186 over the 25-minute affair. But Souza’s striking total consisted of more clean punches, and he appeared just a step ahead of his opponent throughout the fight.

Kennedy was willing to stay tight in the pocket throughout, but a very tight fight in the opening two rounds started to separate a bit in the third. Kennedy suffered a cut that reddened his face, and with the action close, the damage undeniably colored the action.

Souza slowed as the fight wore on, though he did not appear nearly as fatigued as he did in a May win over Joey Villasenor. Instead, his offense simply slowed, and he allowed Kennedy to stake a claim for the fourth frame by ceasing his offensive moments. But while he was ahead on the cards heading into the final round, the result was anything but certain.

Until it was.

Souza and Kennedy were even again in the final round, but a brief moment of back control on the feet followed by a powerful flurry in the closing seconds left little doubt as to who would claim the belt.

In the end, Souza was awarded the unanimous-decision win with scores of 49-46, 48-47 and 48-47.

Souza (13-2 MMA, 3-0 SF) has now won three-straight fights and is undefeated under the Strikeforce banner. Kennedy (12-3 MMA, 3-1) loses for the first time since 2007.

In lightweight action, former EliteXC champion K.J. Noons turned in one of his most impressive performances of his career, but it was marred by a pair of questionable attacks.

Opponent Jorge Gurgel once again refused to play to his grappling strengths and instead chose to stand and trade throughout the contest – a strategy that did not turn out well.

Noons earn the best of the striking in the opening frame, and Gurgel’s face showed the wear. With blood trickling down Gurgel’s face, Noons unleashed a powerful left hook right at – or perhaps shortly after – the closing bell of the opening round. Gurgel was dropped from the shot, but referee Kerry Hatley ruled that the punch was legal and a dazed Gurgel was fine to carry on.

Noons pounced in the second frame, and another pinpoint combination put Gurgel again on the canvas. But as Noons looked to Hatley to stop the fight (he declined), he unleashed a barrage of strikes destined to end the fight. Unfortunately, one of those appeared to be an illegal knee that grazed Gurgel’s head.

Hatley had seen enough and waved off the fight, even as a protesting Gurgel stumbled to his feet.

Following the win, Noons said it was adrenaline that led him to the wild finish.

“I’ve got the killer instinct, and I wanted to just go in there and finish it,” Noons said.

Following the win – his sixth straight – Noons (10-2 MMA, 2-0 SF) called out everyone from Floyd Mayweather to Nick Diaz. Meanwhile, Gurgel (13-7 MMA, 1-2 SF) once again delivered a crowd-pleasing fight, but he’s won just one time in his past five trips to the cage.

If the comparisons between fellow WWE veterans Bobby Lashley and Brock Lesnar hadn’t stopped before Saturday night, they will certainly cease following the evening’s first televised contest.

The heavily favored Lashley took opponent Chad Griggs to the floor early and often, and he used his collegiate wrestling background to control the action on the floor. But Lashley looked uncomfortable and frantic on top, and he passed on submission attempts in favor of punching from the top. While it was effective in the opening round, it was obvious Lashley was tiring quickly.

As the round closed, Lashley’s face showed the wear of Griggs’ counterattacks as a wide cut just under the left eye bled freely.

In the second round, Lashley put the wound aside and returned to his wrestling base. But even as he advanced to a secure mount position, he showed little desire to finish with a submission – even as multiple opportunities stood in front of him. Lashley’s attack was so anemic from the top that referee Jon Schorle stood the fighters with Lashley in the mount position.

On the restart, Lashley offered a lazy, fatigued shot, and Griggs pushed his head down and unloaded until the end of the frame. Lashley slowly rose to his feet, and as Schorle quizzed the massive American Top Team fighter if he wanted to continue, the former WWE star neglected to answer. It was all Schorle needed to wave off the fight between frames.

Lashley did not protest.

Following the surprise win, Griggs said he realized public opinion was definitely not in his favor.

“I think there was like 15 people here that thought I was going to win,” Griggs said. “Bobby is such an athlete, such a monster.”

With the upset win, Griggs (9-1 MMA, 1-0 SF) has now won four-straight fights overall. The loss for Lashley (5-1 MMA, 1-1 SF) is the first of his career.

source: MMAjunkie.com
WEC bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz is expected to face top challenger Scott Jorgensen next, but the two fighters are going to need to consult their doctors before scheduling a fight.
Cruz and Jorgensen were among 11 fighters medically suspended following WEC 50, which took place Aug. 18 at The Pearl at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas.

MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) today received the list of medical suspensions from Nevada State Athletic Commission Executive Director Keith Kizer.
NSAC doctors suspended both Cruz and Jorgensen for a maximum of 180 days, though each can be cleared early with a negative x-ray. The concern with Cruz is a possible fracture of his right hand. Jorgensen’s suspension is due to a potential break of his left hand.
Cruz broke his left hand in his March win over Brian Bowles.
WEC 50 lightweight winners Bart Palaszewski and Danny Castillo also received 180-day suspensions, though each can be cleared early by doctors. Shane Roller, who was defeated by Anthony Pettis, was also issued a 180-day suspension due to a potential injury to his left knee.

MMA mocks boxing shirt!

With UFC 118 coming soon, looks like everybody is getting in the act of Boxing vs MMA.
James Toney is going to hunt you down!

Personally I feel that both are very good sports although MMA provide more danger to its fighter because of its rule it also provide more excitements to its fans, however I feel that boxers are more skilled. In MMA it is more likely that you see an upset, in boxing you have to really work on your timing and build of on your score.

Its harder to knock out boxer using a bigger gloves compare to MMA that also maybe why people like UFC because its more violent,  and yeah you can choke your opponent in MMA.

So who’s the winner?  I will let you decide on that.

Dont miss UFC 118 Toney vs Couture and Penn vs Edgar stream here…

Freddie Roach sends message to UFC – shows his support for James Toney

8CountNews spoke with Freddie Roach this evening and got his thoughts on a wide array of topics.  First and foremost, Roach takes a few shots at the UFC and makes it clear that it’s NOT MMA Vs. Boxing, due to the simple fact that it’s 100 percent MMA rules.  Roach says that if Couture fought Toney in a strictly boxing match, Toney knocks him out quicker than Couture would ever make Toney tap out.  On the boxing side, Roach informs 8CN that he will be bringing  Julio Cesar Chavez Jr to the Philippines with him to work with Manny Pacquiao.  Check out the entire Podcast with Roach HERE

Report: Cro Cop in for Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira vs. Frank Mir at UFC 119

source: Matt Erickson | http://www.mmafighting.com

Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira has suffered a training injury that will likely require surgery and has pulled out of his UFC 119 main-event rematch with Frank Mir. Stepping in for the heavyweight will be Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic.

The news comes from Fighters Only magazine, citing a source close to the Nogueira camp, and comes just six weeks before the UFC’s Indiana debut.

Nogueira (32-6-1, 3-2 UFC) reportedly suffered a hip injury that will require surgery. Mir (13-5, 11-5 UFC) beat Nogueira when they first met at UFC 92 in December 2008 by knockout.

The UFC had yet to confirm the new main event as of early Sunday evening. Nogueira’s twin brother, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, meets Ryan Bader in UFC 119’s co-main event.

Filipovic (27-7-2, 4-3 UFC) is coming off a submission win over Pat Barry at UFC 115 in June – his first submission victory in nearly four years. Filipovic, the former Pride Open-Weight Grand Prix champion, is 3-1 since returning to the UFC following a nearly two-year hiatus that saw him go 3-0-1 outside the promotion.

Mir last fought at UFC 111 in March, losing by knockout to Shane Carwin in a No. 1 contender’s fight for the chance to meet heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar. Mir’s last victory came at UFC 107 last December, a submission of Cheick Kongo.

UFC 119 will take place at the Conseco Fieldhouse in downtown Indianapolis on Sept. 25. The main card will air live on pay-per-view with at least two preliminary card fights airing live on Spike TV. The state of Indiana passed legislation to regulate MMA a year ago; that legislation took effect Jan. 1, paving the way for the UFC to make its Indiana debut.

The main card also sees the return of former lightweight champion Sean Sherk, who fights for the first time since UFC 98 when he meets unbeaten Evan Dunham. Indianapolis-based welterweight Chris Lytle rematches with Matt Serra, who beat him in the finale of Season 4 of “The Ultimate Fighter.” And on the Spike prelims, Purdue University product and former NFL lineman Matt Mitrione, whose TKO of Kimbo Slice at UFC 113 effectively packed the bags of the infamous former street fighter, fights in front of his home fans when he meets Joey Beltran in a heavyweight bout.

STRIKEFORCE CHALLENGERS 10 RESULTS: Ryan Couture, son of UFC Hall of Famer Randy Couture, impresses in his professional debut

By: Jamie Penick, MMATorch Editor-in-Chief

Ryan Couture, the 27 year old son of UFC Hall of Famer and UFC 118 co-main event fighter Randy “The Natural” Couture, made his professional debut on Friday night at Strikeforce: Challengers 10 on Showtime, and he made the most of the exposure.

In a quick fight, Couture pulled off a nice takedown, got taken down himself and then quickly slapped on a tight triangle choke submission to force Lucas Stark to tap.

The fight, which came in the middle of the night’s card from the Dodge Theatre in Phoenix, Ariz., was one of only two fights on the main card that were full length bouts due to the women’s tournament.

Couture will now look to make a name for himself after making the jump to the professional ranks after a number of amateur bouts.

Penick’s Analysis: Of course, this fight only got on TV because of his last name, but he provided an exciting short fight and picked up a good submission win in his debut. As long as he can take advantage of the doors that will be open to him because of who his father is he can still distance himself from that. If he can start rattling off more wins and if he can look impressive doing so, eventually the talk will turn to being just about him.

James Toney is confident he will win at UFC 118

Looks like the Boxing champ  is up and hype for the challenge this coming Sunday at UFC 118, he will face Randy ” The Natural” Couture.

I see a trend of more boxing fighter trying MMA.

Mayorga  of Boxing was supposed to be in an MMA match before, it was only because of his contractual obligation with Don King that is why it did not happen.

If this will be a stand up game I see Toney winning it, But Couture will not be stupid enough to stand up in front of a boxer, He will most probably wrestle this guy and come away with the win.

I like the sport but I am not an expert and usually my predictions never come true, this time I chose the obvious winner and if my prediction still prove other wise then there is something wrong with  me.

Oh yeah, I think BJ Penn will WIN with this time around aswell , watch out for UFC 118 here

Bout between James Toney and Randy Couture could bring boxing-vs.-MMA debate to head

By Lance Pugmire | latimes.com

The 41-year-old Toney, a former boxing champion in three divisions, has signed on for his first mixed martial arts event Aug. 28 against former Ultimate Fighting Championship heavyweight king Couture, 47. The rhetoric is already heating up.

he Ultimate Fighting Championship started with arguments among fans about which combat discipline was superior.

A decade later, the debate has intensified. Former three-division boxing world champion James Toney, who was miffed when UFC President Dana White said boxers can’t stand up to mixed martial artists, has signed for his first mixed martial arts bout against former UFC heavyweight champion Randy Couture on Aug. 28 in Boston.

“I called Dana White out and he had to save face,” Toney said.

The acrimony between the street-hardened Toney, 41, and White reached a peak this month when White confessed he “got caught up in the MMA-vs.-boxing thing,” and considered Toney’s participation a “freak show.”

“Toney will get his [rear] kicked on August 28 and I’m counting the days,” White said.

“Why wouldn’t I take this [bout]?” asked Couture, 47, who held the UFC heavyweight championship until November 2008. “I heard [Toney] was talking smack about MMA fighters, and that I was on his list of guys he’d knock out. Let’s do it. It’s an MMA fight, and has a lot of crossover appeal — I know the boxing world will be paying attention.”

Toney has spent eight weeks at a Chatsworth gym in two-a-day training sessions, trying to shed his reputation as an uninspired fighter during the latter stages of his boxing career.

“He’s a natural predator,” said Trevor Sherman, the MMA coach who’s taught Toney key grappling fundamentals so Toney can land devastating punches if he gets Couture to the mat. “No one has ever stepped into the octagon with this type of striking prowess.”

Toney said he grew frustrated last year in his attempts to land a heavyweight boxing match against the world champion Klitschko brothers, Wladimir and Vitali, as well as with another champ, David Haye.

Toney was looking on the Internet one day when he noticed White discussing the advantage MMA fighters would have over boxers in an MMA fight. Toney recalled some war stories his manager, John Arthur, told him about participating in no-rules “Sudden Death” fighting in Thailand in the 1960s.

“I’ve told James about sharpening my teeth for those fights, about using the four weapons of your hands and feet, and the joint manipulations I knew,” Arthur said. “He said, ‘Pop, I want to do what you did.’ Couture’s in a fight for his life. He’s never been in there with anyone as vicious. And I’ve never seen James get as up for a fight.”

Toney is looking forward to discovering how much damage he can do to Couture if he lands a punch in a four-ounce MMA glove — boxers typically use 10-ounce gloves. Toney smiled and said, “When they told me I’ll be using those four-ouncers, I said, ‘Oh, Lord, we’re going to jail.’

“I’m going to be representing boxing, and I’m a boxing master. The meanness, the nastiness. I don’t turn my back on anyone like [current UFC heavyweight champion] Brock Lesnar did in his last fight. I love danger. I know this fight represents some danger to me. I’m hitting it head-on.”

Toney (72-6-3, 44 knockouts) signed a three-fight deal with UFC, with an opt-out clause if he loses. But he expects to fulfill his UFC commitment, hopeful for a victory over Couture and a title shot at Lesnar, and he still wants to box too.

“He’s one of the nicest guys in boxing, and I’m glad he has this opportunity to make a few bucks,” boxing promoter Bob Arum said.

Yet, Arum said he didn’t view this fight as the ultimate answer to the question of what fighting discipline trumps all.

“If James hits [Couture] first, he’s going down. But if it goes to the floor, [Toney is] probably going to lose,” Arum said. “If this was a boxing match, I’d be watching it, but this is this cockamamie martial arts, guys rolling around on the floor. It’s not even a sport.”

Toney could be susceptible to the chokeholds or submission positions that former Olympic wrestler Couture can produce. “I’ll stand with him as long as I can to get him where I want: with him on his back and me on top of him,” Couture said.

Trainer Sherman says Toney’s grappling skills will be sufficient, with the primary focus being on unleashing a powerful punch. “Randy’s MMA arsenal is mind-numbing, but James has a [strong] right and left hand,” Sherman said. “If James lands within three inches, he can cause problems. Six inches, he can break things.”

Toney is also out to prove George Foreman’s motto that “age is just a number.” He is six years younger than Couture and Toney believes his mobility after a dedicated training camp will produce an impressive performance.

“I punch and I knock people out, and I’m going in there knowing what everyone in boxing knows: that everybody has a plan until they get hit. I’m a fan of MMA. But these guys hold, kick, scratch when they’re in trouble,” Toney said.

“They can’t mess with boxing.”
