FEU nips La Salle in double OT

By JONAS TERRADO | http://mb.com.ph

Far Eastern University gave La Salle a dose of its own medicine as it pulled off a thrilling come-from behind win Thursday.

The Tamaraws battled back from a 9-point deficit with less than six minutes left in regulation play but needed two extra periods to repulse the young Green Archers, 84-80, and remain unbeaten in the 73rd UAAP basketball tournament at the Araneta Coliseum.

Facing the prospects of absorbing their first defeat, sophomore guard RR Garcia stepped up big time, forcing the first overtime after completing his steal off Simon Atkins with 9.2 seconds left in regulation.
Paul Sanga then took charge in the second extra period when he broke a 74-74 count with a putback off a missed jumper by Aldrech Ramos before hitting two of three foul shots after being fouled from the rainbow country by Joshua Webb for a 78-74 lead with 2:48 remaining.

Atkins later scored to slice the lead in half but, Garcia, struggling for most of the second half, reemerged anew by coming through with a razor-sharp assist to Cameroonian Pipo Noundou for a three-point play then scored a teardrop shot with 63 ticks to go that made it an 83-76 lead. The Archers never recovered after that.

The Archers, who beat fierce rival Ateneo, 66-63, after rallying from a similar deficit last Saturday, took a 64-55 lead with 5:53 left but faded away down the stretch.
By pulling off an escape act, the Tamaraws kept their solo lead with a perfect 5-0 card.
FEU coach Glenn Capacio, however, blasted game officials, saying his wards were distracted by their inconsistent calls.
In the second game, University of Santo Tomas leaned on the red-hot hot shooting of Clark Bautista, Jeric Fortuna and Melo Afuang to squeeze past National University, 59-58, and draw leve lwith La Salle for third to fourth places with identical 3-2 slates.

Marata 3-pointers help Archers slip past Eagles

The late Ric-Ric Marata must be smiling, perhaps very proud of the heroics made by his nephew, La Salle’s Sam Marata.

The 6-foot-2 Marata, a sophomore guard, fired back-to-back three-pointers to help La Salle escape with a 66-63 win over fierce rival Ateneo in the second game of the 73rd UAAP men’s basketball tournament on Saturday at the packed Araneta Coliseum.

The Green Archers relied on Marata’s outside bombs to improve to a 3-1 record behind the immaculate slate of title favorite Far Eastern University (3-0). His triples highlighted La Salle’s closing 13-1 run to end a six-game losing skid against Ateneo.

The Taft-based squad trailed 62-53 with 3:57 left on a shot clock-beating jumper by the Blue Eagles’ Nico Salva as the Green Archers appeared headed for a seventh straight loss against the boys from Katipunan.

But out of nowhere, the young La Salle crew of coach Dindo Pumaren came back strong with Marata coming through in the clutch.

Rookie Jarelan Tampus, the Green Archers’ recruit from the Letran Squires, converted two baskets off transition to cut the Blue Eagles’ lead to three points with about two minutes left.

A Salva split free extended Ateneo’s lead to 63-59 then Marata, coming from a fastbreak play, drained his third triple that trimmed the deficit to one (63-62) with 1:58 remaining.

Marata’s last shot from downtown pushed La Salle to a 65-63 lead entering the final one-minute of the tightly-fought contest.

And this one was big. Off the screen, Marata received a pass from the top of the key. He stepped on the three-point arc and when the shot found its mark half of the 16,566 fans that packed the Big Dome cheered in unison for the Men in Green.

Ateneo had several chances to either win it or send the game into overtime but missed several shots then blew another opportunity when an Eric Salamat steal resulted in a scramble for the looseball. Referees called it a jumpball and possession went to La Salle.

Simon Atkins, who was fouled by Bacon Austria, then split his charities to extend La Salle’s lead to three 17.6 ticks to go.

The Eagles had a chance to send the game into overtime with a three-pointer but Justin Chua, the hero of Ateneo’s 68-56 win over University of Santo Tomas on Sunday and again delivered big shots in the fourth period, muffed an open triple try.

He managed to grab the looseball after his miss but once again missed a desperation shot from about 30 feet that virtually decided the outcome of the game.

“I don’t know what to say, I’m so happy. We were down nine points but the boys showed their heart. It’s been two years already (since we haven’t won a game),” said Pumaren.

La Salle’s last win came on September 30, 2007 when Cholo Villanueva spearheaded the team’s 65-60 victory in a do-or-die Final Four game held in front of 23,000 spectators.

The younger Marata made time to reflect on his uncle, who etched his name in Philippine basketball with his trademark three-point shots that earned him a spot in the National team and in several PBA ballclubs in the late-80’s and for most of the 1990’s.

“Yeah. I think he was guiding those shots,” said Marata, whose uncle passed away in April this year at the age of 45.

He and Joshua Webb paced La Salle’s scoring with 12 points. He went perfect, 4-of-4, from beyond the arc.

While Pumaren, a former teammate of Ricric with the RP squad in 1987, credited the former UAAP Juniors MVP he was also thankful of Tampus.

“We owed it to Tampus. It was a gamble that paid off,” Pumaren said, who beat Ateneo for the first time since 2007 when he guided University of the East to a 14-game sweep of the elimination round en route to an outright finals berth.

La Salle ended the third period with a 46-42 lead behind the likes of Joel Tolentino and lanky center Yutien Andrada.

But the Eagles entered the final canto hitting eight consecutive shots, primarily led by the lefty Chua.

After Salva’s basket, off a last-second pass from Kirk Long, Tampus scored on a layup, then added another twinner and suddenly it was 62-57 with 2:39 to go, setting up a thrilling finish that will perhaps go down as one of the memorable games in the history of this epic rivalry.

Atkins delivered nine points, three rebounds and three assists, Tampus had six points in just six minutes. Yutien Andrada tallied six points and seven boards while Joel Tolentino made five points, four rebounds and five assists.

Chua led the Eagles with 16 points and eight rebounds while point guard Eman Monfort added 11 markers and five rebounds but failed to finish the game after suffering from cramps in the dying seconds

Coach Norman Black also lost Long, who had nine points with a few tough shots off the break, to fouls with two minutes remaining.

“We didn’t finish strong,” said Black. “And it didn’t help that Kirk Long fouled out and Eman Monfort went down with cramps in the end.”

“But it was the defense that let us down. Things such as not picking up their man on fastbreak, giving up three-point shots and not following around screens,” he said, adding that La Salle played scrappier than them.

The more experienced Eagles crumbled and could not match the end-game heroics of Marata, who went berserk in homestretch. – JVP, GMANews.TV

Ateneo dumps UST for second UAAP victory

BACK-TO-BACK champions Ateneo de Manila University Blue Eagles are slowly rounding into form as they took care of business in the fourth period to down the University of Sto. Tomas Growling Tigers, 68-56, in the 73rd UAAP basketball tournament yesterday at the Philsports Arena.

The victory was Ateneo’s second in a row after losing their opening day assignment last weekend and it pushed their record to 2-1 (win-loss), good for a tie for second place in the standings behind the undefeated Far Eastern University (FEU) Tamaraws.

It was a tight game all throughout that saw 11 lead changes. But the Eagles showed the heart of a champion as they persevered and rallied behind the efforts of sophomore big man Justin Chua, who anchored a defensive stand that shut down the Tigers in the final half of the fourth period.

Chua scored 17 points, hauled down 11 rebounds, and made 4 blocks to power the Eagles and send the Tigers to their first loss of the tournament.

In the second game, the La Salle Green Archers carved out a masterful 82-63 win over last year’s runners-up, the University of the East Red Warriors.

The win was La Salle’s second win against a loss while UE suffered their second straight defeat. /Correspondent Jonas Panerio

FEU rallies to hold off NU Bulldogs; Adamson leaves UP five marooned

 NU BULLDOGS

FAR EASTERN University needed another clutch performance from RR Garcia to escape with a second straight nail-biter.

Garcia knocked in seven of his team’s last 12 points as the Tamaraws rallied to nip the National U Bulldogs, 76-72, and grab the solo lead in the 73rd UAAP men’s basketball competition Saturday at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.

The Tamaraws recovered from six points down, 64-70, in the last four minutes with Garcia drilling five points in the key run, before sinking two buffer free throws, 75-72, with 15.1 seconds left.

Reil Cervantes topscored with 20 points for the Tamaraws, while Garcia finished with 18 exactly a week after starring with 25 points in their narrow 72-69 win over Ateneo.

“As I’ve said, there will be no easy games for us,” said FEU coach Glenn Capacio. “Everyone’s saying we’re the No. 1 team, but all the teams have improved.”

In the second game, Adamson forged a pivotal 12-0 spurt in the final stretch to dump the University of the Philippines, 66-59, for its second win in three games.

Eric Camson buried a team-high 16 points and guard Jerick Cañada also stepped up with 14 markers, including five straight points in the comeback that gave the Falcons a 61-51 advantage heading into the final minute.

“We got some lucky breaks, but with way things are going, it’s really an open race for the Final Four,” said Adamson coach Leo Austria.

The Bulldogs absorbed their second loss in three games, while the Maroons remained winless in two outings.

The Tamaraws held NU’s African rookie Emmanuel Mbe to just eight points and seven rebounds after posting a double-double in his last outing.

Mbe, a 6-foot-5 recruit from Cameroon, dominated the post with 21 points and 19 rebounds in the Bulldogs’ upset of La Salle, 59-55, last Thursday.

“We were successful in stopping their big men, but their wingmen made it difficult for us,” said Capacio. “Their wingmen improved a lot.”

Kokoy Hermosisima, who shot 15 of his game-high 23 points from three-point range, kept the Bulldogs in fighting form throughout the game.

Hermosisima scored a putback off Melvin Baloran’s two missed free throws that trimmed FEU’s lead to just a point, 73-72, with 59 seconds left.

In juniors action, back-to-back champion Ateneo crushed the University of the East, 90-61, to grab a share of the lead at 2-0 yesterday at the FilOil-Flying V Arena in San Juan.

Kiefer Ravena pumped in 22 points on top of seven steals and four assists, while Von Pessumal added 14 points and four boards for the Blue Eaglets.

Jonel Parungao shot 16 markers and Roque Estoce had 11 points and 12 assists as the Bullpups also clinched their second straight victory with a 67-65 nipping of the Santo Tomas Tiger Cubs.
