20 year-old David Benavidez got his title shot at WBC Super middleweight world title after his impressive stoppage win over former world title challenger Rogelio Medina in a title eliminator on May 20, 2017. Benavidez will now face former world champion Anthony Dirrell for the title. Both sides are in talks for the fight. According to Benavidez’ promoter Sampson Lewkowicz, the fight will be in late October or the beginning of November.
David Benavidez of Phoenix has an unblemished and impressive record of 18 wins with 17 knockouts. He is a former sparring partner of Middleweight King Gennady “GGG” Golovkin and he will become the youngest boxer to win WBC Supermiddleweight title at the age of 20 if he beats Anthony Dirrell.
Dirrell (30-1-1,24) ,32 years old of Flint Michigan captured the WBC title on May 2014 by defeating Sakio Bika on their rematch. But he lost the title on his first title defense against Bodou Jack. The WBC title was vacated by Jack and decided to move up in weight. Dirrell was ordered to face the #1 contender Callum Smith for the vacant title but Smith joined the World Boxing Super Series Super Middlweight Tournament. David Benavidez is the next available fighter in WBC rating to face Dirrell for the vacant title.
