Nietes vacates WBO 105 lbs. title to face Edgar Sosa

Philippines’ longest reigning world champion Donnie “Ahas” Nietes vacates his WBO light flyweight world title to moves up in flyweight division to face former world champion Edgar Sosa of Mexico for the vacant WBO Inter-Continental flyweight title as the main event of Pinoy Pride 38 that will be held at at the StubHub Center in Carson, California on September 24.

WBO lightflyweight world title is now vacant due to Nietes’ failure to defend it against the mandatory challenger Moises Fuentes whom Nietes fought to a draw in their first fight on March 2, 2013 and on May 10, 2014 where he was knocked down three times and was stopped in 9th round in their rematch. Nietes didn’t want to face Fuentes for the third time and asked his promoter to make a mega fight against unified WBO-WBA flyweight world champion Juan Francisco Estrada of Mexico. The negotiation between Nietes and Estrada failed because the WBA ordered Juan Francisco Estrada to face the WBA “regular” champion Kazuto Ioka of Japan.

Sosa (52-9-0, 30KO) is a former WBC lightflyweight world champion. He won the title over Brian Viloria on April 14, 2007 and successfully defended it 10 times after he was stopped by Rodel Mayol on Nov. 21, 2009.

Nietes fight against Sosa is a tune up fight for fight against Estrada on 2017 but it will not be easy for both fighters.
