MORE than 200 triathletes and 15 frisbee teams have already signified their intentions to see action in the 2011 Zamba Multisports Festival on March 18 to 20 at the Uacon Cove beach strip in Candelaria, Zambales.
The province of Zambales at least earmarked almost half-a-million pesos budget for the three-day event, which Jun Omar Ebdane, the provincial administrator and overall chairman of the sports festival said that the turnout of participants exceeded their expectations. He said that with the huge number, they have now to set a limit of participants to manageable level.
“Our festival is still young, so to speak, that is why we have to keep the numbers to a manageable limit,” Ebdane explained the imposed cutoff.
“This is really heartening, and overwhelming at the same time, that a lot of athletes showed interest in our sportsfest. It means that our province is now gaining recognition as a destination for such events,” Ebdane said.
The multi-sports festival was organized by the office of Gov. Hermogenes “Jun” Ebdane Jr. to develop a tourism niche for the province and thereby help local communities earn additional income.
Other sports events to be held in relation to the festival are photo contest and a bikini competition, which will fit the backdrop of Potipot island, dubbed as “Boracay of Zambales” because of its white, powdery sand.
Ebdane said that the development of the province’s sports tourism industry is a major thrust of his administration as Zambales has many untapped destinations that are ideal for sports events.
The first day of the festival will start with a 120-kilometer cycling race from Uacon to the capital town of Iba and back.
